FANTASTIC... you know they surf too!, i rescued my 3 GSP from the GSP rescue in Gopher Canyon CA, they hold yearly surfing competitions in san diego for dogs.....nothing like a GSP

They are amazing dogs but this is probably not good for their ears and eyes. Also, since they hardly ever give up when searching for a thrown toy, this could be dangerous or the dog. Holding it's breath is not natural for a dog, especially one that is already breathing heavy.

Do you have problems with ear infections? I've got a Wiemaraner and a German Short Hair pointer. Both love to swim and I've got to flush their ears in the summer or they get infected. I try to fold the ears up or back so they air out.

XD My GSP refuses to go in water he can't walk in. I brought him in water deep enough for him to swim, and he tried to but I had to save him. O.o Not really, I was standing right next to him. I am not like those evil people who throw their kids into the water to teach them how to swim (I still hide behind the trees when they try to do that to me at the lake, and I am near 20 years old...).

What a good boy Cookie! Cookies responds so well because you talk to him a lot. I talked to my Odie a lot and he understood (we had him 15 years) most of what we said. Odie passed away on July 12, 2010 at the age of 18-20. He was the smartest, most sensitive being we were truely privledged to have shared 15 short years with him. BTW: Odie, according to our vet was a show quality Pointer - and ready to be put on doggy death row. Don't breed, SPAY-NEUTER-ADOPT-RESCUE. May need homes.

GSP's are awesome dogs! Mine loves water and he is almost 15.  They never calm down though, very very high energy dogs. Great with kids and very protective.

Great dog.I have a gsp who is equally crazy about water, but also a very good pointer and tracker. They're the best all-round gun dogs.

Someone here says they're shedding a lot...? Well, sir I don't know what you feed your dog but my gsp does not shed "a lot" and its the 6th race of dog I share my house with and certainly the most agreeable one !!

I've trained lots of GSPs and all can swim very well once they are introduced to the water in the right way. At first they try to paddle with their heads up and butts down and look like they are drowning. You need to go in the water with them and lift their butt so they can make use of their back legs.

@wbeejay Funny you mentioned about training. I actually didn't have to 'introduce' my old dog (had to get rid of him 10 years ago unfortunely) to water. I can't remember how old he was but I have to say 12 weeks, give or take. I actually walked into the water to cool off myself and I heard my girlfriend at that time calling his name. I turned around and he was swimming after me (water was waist deep). But I do agree with the way you have suggested.

@obschina - Good post! SNR = SPAY - NEUTER - RESCUE. Just go to Pointer Rescue and see how many Pointers are now in need of a good home. How many (particularly southern men) breed em, use em and throw em away) heartless, cruel. A dog should have a soft couch, a warm forever home and to be treated like a pack member not a thing. Particularly Pointers, they are so smart and so socialble. Adopt don't breed. Kill shelters are killing millions of dogs each year - makes no sense.
