  • Best guitar improv tutorial on YouTube!

  • What scales are you using? Those ones from the video "How to practice scales"?

  • this helped me get good understanding of how to do stuff. Ive been trying to improv for the last few days, but I always just ended up playing up and down scales, lol. this was a good lesson.

  • your improv reminded me of dream theatre- pull me under :D your an amazing teacher i definetly subbed :D keep doing what your doing

  • How can i find that backing track... or what could i search to get similar ones

  • i love that your not playing with distortion everyone plays fast and distorted but i like how ur more mellow

  • Lowhigh. You should get a delay pedal with dotted 8ths

  • Hey, how do i quickly play 16th notes? and make it sounds im hitting every single note fast?

  • Was that really improvised? :P

  • So a good way to learn how improvise on the guitar would be to learn the scales and map out almost note on the fretboard? thank you for the help!

  • Dude.

    You're a badass.

    Thank you.

Your video on harmonizing the major scale has helped me tremendously!

  • if you learn to improvise, then how the fuck is that an improvisation?

  • @namebp you need to learn the skills and techniques of improvising, such as scales. You also need to know what sounds good ans what doesnt.

  • @namebp Did you watch the video? As long as your not doing the same thing every time, your improvising.

  • do you have to know scales to improv?

  • @halfhott yes!!!!!

  • You are the greatest thing on Youtube. Keep doing what you're doing man. Be encouraged.

  • Since I'm not so good at listening without subtitles (I'm a foreigner) and learning at the same time, I thought "hmm, maybe I could use that audio transcript thing that makes subtitles", it only became worse..

But I guess your video is really good although I didn't understand a lot from it.

  • Your the man!!! Thanx for sharin' it was really good

  • Your improv is so Steve Vai

Also very awesome, nice lesson =)

  • good stuff man

  • I love your lessons. awesome!

  • if i want to improve in a minor scale

how can i make it to sound minor not major?

  • @zuchi220693

You go to the 6th note of the major scale (W-W-H-W-W-W-H) and start the minor scale (W-H-W-W-H-W-W) from that note and find various positions and octaves of that note to start the pattern.

For example if you were playing the C major Scale (C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C) you would go to the sixth note, being A, and start an A minor scale.

Honestly, the quality of major or minor is defined better by the backing track/rhythm.

  • @zuchi220693 If you're playing in C for example, play the A minor scale and add a G# it'l sound gnarly

  • @jangel2771 i dont know! lol :P

  • It's also very important to know your scales and practice them in every position if you want to shred!

  • That made a lot of sense, I'm going to start hitting my scales more now.

  • that reminds me alot of sail the soothsayer from buckethead... have you ever heard it?

  • Subscribed. :)

  • awesome improv!!

  • more views in the us than canada, haha ironic!

  • your amazing

  • Wow,tnks a lot andrew, u really inspired me, i guess ur awesome and that melodic line......is it even legal to have so much melodic sense?????? I love u

  • would you recommend 9 guage strings for heavier music? like metallica. I like to downtune sometimes too. the standard gauge doesn't feel right for me :/

  • @LaffaTaffa I'm no expert but generally 9s are rather thin for metal. I personally use 11s for my guitars tuned to d standard and 12s for c.

  • @cheezwiz7I play in D and I use D'Addario custom sets that have the three first strings from a 9 set and the 3 big ones from 10 set, that way the heavy shit with all the palm-muting and brutal riffing has a lot of low-end attack and it's easier to bend the higher notes cause the strings are smaller and they also sound a bit better, makes tapping a bit easier too.

  • cool

  • dude, you really know your stuff! ppl who play guitar can understand this video so easily, yer truly one of the best teacher i have seen on youtube. thanks for doing this man, keep on rockin!

  • Honestly this man and Paul Gilbert are probably the 2 best teachers ever.

  • i fell in love at 5:14

  • oh! its not expert village :D then im gonna watch this :D

  • 16 people are members of expert village

  • im at a stage where i play a diatonic chord progression, record it then solo using the pentatonic. but it gets boring so im glad ive found your videos Andrew. i have a small question. if i play in the key of C but i start my progression on the 2nd chord Dm, so a progression like 3 6 4 5 3. could i play dorian over the whole progression? and if so should i also use the a minor pentatonic along with the C major and the blues scale or is that to many notes? thank you :)

  • i don't know if it's just me, but it's kind of hard to hear.. but the lesson looks good!

  • wow man you playing very good!!! i give you credit fr that stuff there man keep it up!

  • Comment removed

  • Great Videos. Keep them comming

  • hi andrew, your lessons are very good. Do you have lesson about how cover songs by ear ?

  • You think you could post some tabs for the solo?

  • Solo was awsome!

  • thanks so much and 2 thumbs up and definetly worth a favourite! :S

  • Hey awesome playing, (very Satch like, Lol!) I've been playing for about 2 and half years and know a few scales. Trouble is when I try and solo I just find myself going up and down scales and itsounds boring. Is there any way of breaking out of this rut and making my playing more exciting?

  • @28mistert Take some mushrooms.

  • i'm 43400 views and 403 like

  • you're really good.

  • gotta hate the sound of that guitar in the improv, just sounds so ugly

  • critique me please :) type in mohbkr and check out my "Curios Case of Autumn" i like your videos man. Great work

  • thank god its longer than those minute long videos by 'expert'village :D:D

  • Good approach!

I'm no 'shredder' and so-so lead player. I've often struggled with improvisation but your technique makes sooooooooo much sense.

Time to bring back my daily practice sessions with this at the top!

    Great job. Thanks.

  • I was the 41,214 viewer and 379 like!

  • @pabloskys7 NO shittin, are you telling that you are the 41,214th viewer and the 379 who liked the video? can you prove that? I'm jealous

  • remindes me of steve vai

  • thank you for this vid and awesome improvisation. so basically

in order to improvise you must learn alot of scales in a specific

key? how is it that different keys can sound good together?

    please reply. thank you

  • THAT WAS AMAZING

  • Cool guitar licks.

  • That improv reminds me of Cemetery Gates by Pantera. Very nice.

  • @Kaniac424

that's it! i just knew it really sounded like something.. but i dind'n know what :D

  • man my CUMputer sucks with the audio Dx i wish i could hear you clearly cause i suck at improv so bad

  • That improv was the FRIKN MEANEST IMPROV IVE EVER HEARD ! :D

  • @muzicmaster8 He said he practiced it before recording...

    ..Did sound sexy though..lol

  • I dont play the guitar. I dont even own one. But your an eloquent speaker and when you speak so fluently it really draws you in. Wished you could have been my music teacher back when i was in highschool. I prolly would be still playin. Best of luck to you. oh, your guitar playin is really good. :)

  • thank you

  • Cool solo, godawful tone.

  • so basically you want to practice scales first before anything?

  • i have one question people playing improvisations in videos, live, duels or shows learn their improvisations before the show or they just go with the guitar and start improvising?

  • @wanso452 lol, well if they learnt it all beforehand then it wouldn't be improvising now would it?

  • @wanso452 Well if they pre-learn/practice them its not improvising its just solo'ing.

  • @wanso452 They just go with the guitar and start to improvise, improvising is when you come up with something on the spot. LOTS of guitars have gotten good enough to not what they're doing.

  • that awesome kickass solo melted my face...

    and blew my mind

    and burned my computer

  • Great tips here!

  • wht r u doin i dnt get it

  • @mikhailr0cks What don't you get? In the beginning he choosed a random note: C.

So he played all possible C posstions then played the C Major scale, C D E F G A B C, from one octave to one darker. Then he played C chords in different possitions (the 1st, 3rd and 5th notes of the scale starting on the first, so C E G.)

  • Hallo, well very good in teaching stuff.... I teach guitar to people in the village where I live... so I can use some of youre ideas... thanx...check some of my video's to/

    Greeetz

  • just downloaded all your tutorial...so glad found someone on the you tube...

    thx.

  • Hey, I just learned the Ionian and the other six things. But in all major/minor scales is it : A B C D E F G notes. but for example isn't a minor scale the same as f minor phyrigan then?

  • how many scales should i learn before i start improvisin, i recently learned some of mr crowley and some of randy rhodes' guitar techniques are helping my fingering but i still cant improvise very well i tried doin like u said but i only know like 2 scales by heart lol

  • @midgetsarerare6677 hello friend improvisation needs just understanding of notes and sense of feel..one scale can do A LOT if you know how to squeeze melodic ideas i recommend you start on improvisation as soon as you can with the scales that you know..check out his *simple soloing* lesson and *top 5 improvisation concepts* those will help you

  • YOU ARE FUCKING SICKKKKKKKKKK i been improvin 4 a while check out my stuff i got like 3 songs and a freestyle

  • Great solo. I heard a lot of licks that reminded me of Petrucci's jazz work. Brilliant! Keep it up.

  • i look at this video over again just for that sick solo

  • I can play well-known solos as and I'm self learning and have always wonder how the famous guitarists can improvaise that good, and when I heard it was scale I were very sceptic at it first, but now I am learning The pentatonic scale, can you tell me some other scales that would work?

  • @robban97it depends on what kind of music you are planning to play friend..pentatonic and minor blues scales are most common in rock and blues..you can learn the minor scale *a.k.a aeolian mode* and the major scale *a.k.a Ionian mode* if you want a more classical feel..*or modern metal* or other modes as well..and im glad you chose to understand the power of scales...BUT scales alone are mere tools you can use the most important is the feel and practice

  • @arcainjust Thanks, I appricaite your time:)

  • what kind of bc is that?

  • i made a Improvising video i posted it as a video resonse can u tell me wat u think

  • OMG u r really good i really appreciate this vid u should hang with me sometime lol

  • thanks for posting this! im gonna work on this right away! haha your videos have helped me out alot! i can do some legato, sweep picking, speed picking now and i can shred like crazy! and your good with explinations cause im only 11 and i get everything ur saying!

  • hey sir..how to du use scales to cre8 new riffs?

  • @weaponx29 play up and down the scale, and mix in common riffs that you like from your favorite artists. play over jam tracks sometimes, and you will get the hang of it

  • That's the low end B.C Rich right? Is it any good?

  • @DonXter A guitar is only as good as the person playing it. That's why he makes it sounds so good.

Then again some guitars are straight junk. D:

  • louder?

  • DUDE, YOU ARE THE MAN! i'm gonna watch all of your vids!

  • DUDE, YOU ARE THE MAN! i'm gonna watch all of your vids!

  • Thank you SO much -- the attachments on your site are AMAZING. This is what I have been looking for - for the past year and now I found it! Thanks!!!

  • ok u told me what to do but not how wlf

  • dude sick vid man good playing.

  • i have question... Do you use only E minor scale to improvise for the jam track?

  • Very nice lesson :) Best thing is, that i noticed ive been doing this without having seen ur video. but now, after having seen it, ill focus on that even more ;) cheers

  • Good lesson man. Really detailed and I understood everything you said.

  • So i've been learning the scales and all, and I can speed pick, alternate pick, and economy pick pretty well, and I am decent at moving up and down the fret board. Yet I still find myself getting stuck in one position. For example, I'll start with a C (3rd fret 5th string) and then play near its octave, the C on the 3rd string. How do I go from there to another phrase? I know where other positions are, yet I still can't get another phrase out in the key of C, which should be really easy.

  • wat gear were u using

  • 5:30 - 5:37 : EPIC!!

  • sounds like ufo

  • awsome! it sounds like 70's hair rock

  • what bc rich is that?

  • Andrew must say, you look kinda nerdy, but when you play on the guitar, you look really cool, and it sound really awesome ! :D

  • nice!

  • Andy Timmons Influenced .... Great Playing, Proper Eargasm .. *Chapeau*

    Props from Egypt = ]

  • i was 20,000th view and the 200th rating :D

  • Cool !!!

  • Comment removed

  • No? Opeth came up with that.

  • Once you learn how to do this on guitar, you can have hours and hours of fun :]. I'm no where near this skill level but i managed to sit in one spot and play guitar for a few hours just playing on scales. Mellowed me out :].

  • @QuinnC92

amen. i hope to get there myself and I cannot wait!

  • very melodic

  • ok some one answer this please...so pretty much wat this guy is saying is that if i have learned the fretboard notes and stuff i can just learn any ole scales doesnt matter which ones as long as i move them to the right position to where they are all in the same key when i use them for my solo...and then from there im ready to start improvising???..thats the way ive understood someone please tell me if im right or wrong

  • hey , depending on how advanced you are on your guitar, the guy is probably right. try- gr8bluesgtr`s Channel - scroll down to the 5 essential boxes. that will get u improvising in a few hours. check it out...i`m playing lead for about 2 - 3 years and it helped me a lot.....cheers

  • Some parts of his solo sound kinda like Zappa ;D

  • could you do same concept for the bass?

  • how sad is it when i type in: How to impr...the first suggestions are

    How to impress a chick

    How to impress a girlfriend

    How to impress a woman

    hahaha wow

  • hahaha yes i know

i was thinking the same when I typed it
