  • He's a Blade and Inter Milan fan.

Seen him at a few Blades matches over the years, the Housemartins are always on in the boozers around Bramall Lane.

  • For Jeniffer x

  • sweet bird called youth, you will never return

  • I think he is a Hull supporter

  • Underneath Paul Heatons Sheff Utd shirt lies a Hull City shirt, much closer to his heart.

  • Which is the wrong side of sheffiled ????

  • My favorite band of all time from all genres.

  • Little Man Tate version miles better!

  • dont be so stupid

  • Behave yourself

  • long time I searched this song, ends, it is very nice:)

  • love this thankz jacaranda 94.2 for playing it

  • You forgot to use the definite article in your sentence. It should begin: "The title should be..."

  • "You can't sing, you look awful. You'll go a long way!"

Prophecy for a musical future yet to come? ;]

  • I think it's here now.

  • SENZA PAROLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Bravo !

  • Une merveille.

  • Esta cancion me recuerda a Berlin ,

  • What does this joker mean 'were'?! Still alive and beautiful as always

  • this band was introduced to me in germany,,, what an excellent lied kan deutchland nie vergessen sehr, sehr sehr gut!!!! ;)

  • again good for her, i hope she enjoyed it.

  • good for her

  • génialissime !

  • J'en pleure ...

  • Questa canzone è troppo troppo bella! Grandissimi Beautiful South!

  • What holds this song in my memory is the counterpoint between the "intimate" classic-love-song style of the piano and vocals with the delicious irony and sarcasm of not a few of the lyric runs ("Deep so deep/The number one I hope to reap/Depends upon the tears you weep..." etc.). For me, at least, that makes a five-star song in and from any era you care to name. And now I've seen the video. Sweet-ness!

  • I think comparing these to the Beatles is a little silly... but I must confess I recall three of them doing the lead singing for various songs, and they were all excellent. Very strong band. Of course the Housemartins were epic too. :D

  • tus a nao le beautiful south ecrit bien le lyrbm (i am not so keen on beautiful south but the song is good)

sorry for the mistaces my english is mot very good:)

EXTRA

  • You've missed the point of the song a bit there. It's about every girl he's been with. Could be hundreds; or just the one. Not that touching really. Excellent song though and a top band!!

  • I'm afraid you've actually missed the point of the song. It's taking the piss out of the songs that will include a girl's name to make the song seem more personal, and so help shift copies of cd's (hence the line "you've made me so much moneyi wrote this song for you"). Although this message is true in some cases i don't believe it to be universal (see "martha" by tom waits, a really great song).

  • Imagine being the girl who this was written about!

I'd cry each time I heard it. Such a lovely tune.

  • my name is jennifer and my friends called me jenny

    and so....

    it is a náme lol

  • Great song...great artists!

  • Jeez.. jenny is a diminutive of Jennifer , it is a real name. I forgot how good and touching this song is. Superb!

  • what ever

  • You are kidding?

People are debating whether a name is a real name?

There is not a written law for what constitutes a 'real name'

Generally on birth certificates names are of their fullest form, like tom is usually Thomas etc. But there's nothing stopping anyone from putting Jenny on a birth ceritificate.

  • i love this song as much as red dwarf or arctic roll - absolutely smashing !!

  • im sure jenny isnt a real name

  • Yes and no ^^ Jenny could be a "real name" but mostly it comes from "Jennifer!" ---- he sings it.. listen one more time and you'll hear the "Jennifer's" in the song :-)

  • classic, beautiful satirical take on the heartless music industry of late, cowell eat your black soul out

  • Comment removed

  • There is some crackers on here. how can Jenny not be a proper name?

    Cecil, now theres a name..:-)

you call your kid Brittney or something along those lines, like most boy racer knobends!

  • its sad how people these days give in to hate rather than being strong and accept each other

  • aaron, you may be right, but this kin'o' mental cruelty wus bad eneuch commin fae ither weans whun ye gane tae school, but whun the teachers join't in this kin' o' ill fashion't cruelty it pits a mark on ye for the rest o' yer deys an it's ill tae hae onythin but a suspeeshun for ony sae criet larnit folk way there fancy Inglish tongues whut they be tae get aff a whin stane for they niver got them roon here. Anyway, did you enjoy the video?

  • lol yeah good video and av just red wat ya put wi eyes half open lol so i didn de bad lol

  • Do you think that it fares even better than David Bowie in his Ziglington Stardust era?

  • twat! how can "jenny" not be a name! well i hope it is or my whole life has been a lie!!

    thats jenny!

    with a Y, not IE

    not jennifer, jenny!!

i love this somg! it has MY name in it!! cunt!

  • just ignore lol just a knob good song

  • I'm confused now..is your name jenny..or cunt ?

  • any song that reminds me of school crushes are good. this is top of the tree. such a wonderful song and easy to sing along with.

  • i luv this song it help's to get kid's to sleep.lol

  • when the beautiful south split up it upset me a fair bit im fairly young and grew up with both my parents loving the housemartins and bs and then they split and it dawned no chance of any new music they were and will remain in my heart as some of the best musicians ever!!

  • one of the best songs of the 80s...so many memories attached to it,sigh...ty beautiful south :)

  • I find it amusing when people argue about interpretations of great songs, just enjoy the music! lol

OK VIENS VOIR "EYES WATER FALLING" TECKMASSE

    c'est une surprise

  • no the song is mean to be like a piss take...

its a beautiful song but the idea is that its really shallow as hes only praising what hes gotten from all the women...

  • agreed

  • There is an old saying,

    'You talk PISH'

  • thats spot on

  • come on you hull lol!!! :)

  • So many meanings, So many feelings, One song, let the love flow for the Beautiful South.

  • love it lol me and my sister were singing this on Lips (a game on the XBox 360) it was funny :) lol

  • there are no innuendos in this song whatsoever, try listening to the lyrics, eh?

  • Ok, well, there's many ways to see this. My viewpoint is from the names of the women and lyrics such as 'I love you from the bottom of my pencil case'. I see it as a pimp singing to his women.

  • What a limited imagination and perspective you have.

  • I love it

  • Great song.. it a piss take out of phil collins!

  • No it's a piss take out of song writers that use women's names in songs to try to achieve personal success, and is inspired by a Ray Charles album in which every track is a girls name. Nothing to do with Phil Collins at all...

  • They ARE a sarcastic band, and the best kinds of songs take multiple interpretations. You gave YOURS, I gave MINE.

  • I understand what you are saying, but it isn't my interpretation of the song, but the stated meaning of the song from the man who wrote it himself - Paul Heaton. It's explained in a biography written about the band called 'Last Orders At Liars Bar'.

  • Oh right, I looked up the wikipedia article and saw something like that. They're a great band, kind of like Radiohead, but Radiohead isn't usually sarcastic, just bleak.

  • What I meant was, not similar in style to Radiohead, but on that kind of level, just doing things differently.

  • Why the hell are you watching it then?

  • Brilliant song; great, biting lyrics and a great tune, too. A classic!

  • lol i remember the blamanche ,we never heard of it after ,i wonder what it does now

  • Geil weil es erinnert an meine 1. große liebe

  • at 1:50 is george michael^^

  • yes

  • Ohh my god what a beautiful song! I've been looking for that song for years...

    Thanks so much for posting

  • This song was constantly played on the video juke box in the NAAFI at worthy down - for some reason squaddies loved it!!

  • you cant sig you look awful...you will go far

  • the original was actually

"i love you from the bottom of my boxer shorts "

  • I share the last name with Paul;) Im Tom Heaton!

    Fantastic song though!

  • why dosent he love me damit, were is my name.

  • The original actually went:

"I love you from the bottom of my Betty Swallocks."

This is the radio edit LOL

  • really , ur not jokeing with me is that true lol if it is thats so funny lol big grin

  • no it don't there just taking the piss an all lol

  • BIG GRIN hey hey at least someones honest with me lol

  • This song makes me laugh each time I hear it. Even though it takes the mickey out of me!!!

  • Used to love the lyrics when it came out.

    Great song.

I remember watching them singing it live on Top of The Pops.

  • Always preferred the extended album version, but still love this.

  • ooh i love this song my uncle who passed away always sang this song to me

  • haha I love this song, you made me so much money I wrote this song for you!! Brilliant

  • One of the best.

  • This song is so true, who didn't write in their pencil case ? Neil loves Nicky, Cathy loves Paul etc. God but does this ever bring back memories.

  • they were taking the piss out of the x-factor twenty years before it was invented!!

  • great song. Anyone writing song like this anymore?

  • this song and ill sail this ship alone, by them are just brilliant

  • chef-d'oeuvre absolu!

  • Amazing song - beautiful melody set against caustic, ironic, intelligent lyrics. Loved this band, pity fickle Radio One abandoned them from playlist after 'Quench' LP and singles.

  • they are too good for radio 1. radio 1 sucks

  • gorgeous song, and funny

  • I remember sitting in the back of the car as a kid and being chuffed because my name (Alyson) is mentioned. Thanks for posting this, though the video is so random! Made ma piss myself though. :-)

  • omg! aint heard this song in ages, i was only a kid wen this came out. i neva knew hu sung it or wat the song was called. i just heard it be4 a rugby match today and asked my dad hu sung it.... THANK YOU so much for adding it!

  • blancmange mania lmao! Class.

  • fantastic

  • brings back memories

  • great song , reminds me of school .

  • Sorry but someone fill me in. Who's the bloke singing the main part of this song?

I'm only 19 and on this page because my family brainwashed me into being a Beautiful South fan... But my knowledge on them is somewhat slacking :(

  • i think you might mean dave hemingway - and there is nothing wrong with being brainwashed into being a beautiful south fan

  • The whole brainwashing sentence was my attempt at humour.

Guess we can chalk that one up as a fail lol.

    Appreciate the reply though.

  • "Guess we can chalk that one up as a fail lol."

Nah, It made me laugh anyhoo, very funny.... you redeemed yerself mate lol.

  • 80's selection

    TECKMASSE

    "house is in the air"

  • That pencil case runs deep baby.

  • i think heaton is a better singer tho cos his voice is deeper and stronger. hemmingways voice is quite soft.

heaton was better lookin when he was younger tho!

  • Poor Paul Heaton, felt he head to try and put that fella down in that video because he could sing better and he was better looking. Heaton almost passed as a fella with some substance till I saw him on Question Time. Seemingly doepd to the eyeballs, he made less sense than a drunken old bird.

  • lol paul looks so young there lol! lks quite fit in this vid! XD

i only got to c em live once shame cos they r gr8!

luv paul the best tho lol

  • i love these guys shame the split...tho they did have a long run!

  • brilliant band and nice lads, too. I once had the honour and pleasure to meet them after a concert, eighteen years ago - they were just lovely! can't believe how time flies...

  • I met them about the same time period in Wolverhampton. We're having a pre concert pint in a pub next to the Civic. When Paul and the boys walk in. Started chatting to them and they were sound. Had to laugh when they told us they had to be on stage in 20 minutes and they were sitting in the boozer. We left the pub at the same time and they went straight on stage. Class gigs back then. Moved out to Canada and saw them for the first time in 12 years in Toronto in 2006. Then they went and split.

  • Does Heaton look like a Chandler for TV Series Friends? :)

  • my favorite song since i was a little girl..thanx for posting this video..

  • j'adore cette chanson, i don't know it was the same singer than housemartins (i like too)

    Thanks a lot from france

  • Great song! Splendid! 5 stars!!

  • how odd, found this comment by chance...

  • Well done, Heaton.

    You dry b@stard.

  • i meant heaton's sarcasm or irony or wahtever its called :) i love it :)

  • i love sarcasm and i love this song :))

  • and I love YOU!!!!

  • wahtever you meant by that... :P

  • just having a laf

  • if this a reply to my comment there was no hint of sarcasm in it what so ever!

  • beatiful south are my fave band ever!and this song is so remanisent of school days when you wrote the name of who you fancied on the bottom of your pencil case!

  • Dave , Paul and all the gang your LEGENDS 5/5Full stop

  • I love their music!

  • What a wonderful band

  • absolutely love it! love all their songs, but this one is funny =)

  • I love this song, and the lyrics are genius

It is a clever parody of the all too common love song of that period

It talks of the true meaning behind those songs andf how they were written just for moneyt and not for love

    It's amazing

one of my favourite all time songs
