It's taking the piss out of the songs that will include a girl's name to make the song seem more personal, and so help shift copies of cd's (hence the line "you've made me so much moneyi wrote this song for you"). Although this message is true in some cases i don't believe it to be universal (see "martha" by tom waits, a really great song).

Poor Paul Heaton, felt he head to try and put that fella down in that video because he could sing better and he was better looking. Heaton almost passed as a fella with some substance till I saw him on Question Time. Seemingly doepd to the eyeballs, he made less sense than a drunken old bird.

I met them about the same time period in Wolverhampton. We're having a pre concert pint in a pub next to the Civic. When Paul and the boys walk in. Started chatting to them and they were sound. Had to laugh when they told us they had to be on stage in 20 minutes and they were sitting in the boozer. We left the pub at the same time and they went straight on stage. Class gigs back then. Moved out to Canada and saw them for the first time in 12 years in Toronto in 2006. Then they went and split.

I love this song, and the lyrics are genius
It is a clever parody of the all too common love song of that period
It talks of the true meaning behind those songs andf how they were written just for moneyt and not for love
