Great Docu! My theory is that Paul got so angry after seeing the movie that he decided to make it - to set the record straight? Then the movie lost well undeserved millions - so they hatched the plot to claim Paul DIED in 1966 - and was replaced by a DOUBLE!? Like Wizzer was Holly's "double". Since I was at the Park Plaza Penthouse in the fall of 1966 awaiting the Beatles & discussing the mounting of my "Wheel of Life" mural - this is hogwash! Acid everyday that year, Paul too I bet! He's real!
sounds like norman petty was withholding money from buddy sounds like the boys were tricked into putting Petty's name on the songs as co writer so he could make money of of them sounds like he din't want to lose his cash cow
Maria Ellana Holly said Buddy would have NEVER gone on the tour if it had not been for PETTY, he withheld Buddys money and forced him to go on the deadly tour. He minipulated the young men into putting HIS name on the recordings knowing he would have control of Buddys money..theif, liar, killer, Petty
@Grifiki His real last name was spelled Holley, and he intended that to be his name throughout his career but on his self titled album they misspelled it "Holly" He didn't want to wait for the mistake to be corrected so he decided Holly would be his stage name.
@drrrrrk it was actually prior to that.... Decca and Cedarwood Publishing misspelled his name "Holly" on his ORIGINAL recording contract, and due to not wanting to rock the boat, he left it as it was and didnt correct them...
Elvis was perhaps the king ..but Buddy Holly influenced more artist than Elvis could..John Lennon once said .."If there wasn't a Buddy Holly..there is no Beatles"...the entire opening acts of the fabled English invasion were all playing music that was influenced heavily by Buddy Holly...plus..He was just a good guy...Never seemed to get all caught up in the "star" system that I believe killed Elvis from becoming like Buddy..a great singer..and an approachable legend
@dewaynecullen Both John and Paul made similar comments regarding who influenced them the most ..and both said that Buddy was their idol..I will have to find the comment from John ..but ...One of them even intimated that the name "Beatles " was a tip of the hat to the "Crickets"...of course I may be wrong ..Been wrong a lot it seems...(old timers disease)
@evetsgolb The Beatles name was a homage tro the Crickets, but John Lennon's famous comment to this day, "Nothing truly affected me until Elvis. Before Elvis, there was nothing." is more or less worldwide knowledge.
OK is it me or is there something extremely chilling when you see an empty music hall and buddy's vioce echoing over the stalls as the spotlight dreams of a centre stage buddy holly? That for me is the best image i'll ever have to remind me of a lost sound of music
An awesome retrospective from an artist that respects his legacy. It's too bad YouTube had to take this down for a time because the copyright is clearly MPL/BBC, and Warner Music has NEVER owned any rights to it. Why more than a decade passed before he could do a similar treatment of the Beatles may never be known. It's must see stuff for anyone learning the history of popular music.
@Tarn1968 The celeste is the instrument that plays on Tchaikowsky's "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy." from The Nutcracker. If I remember rightly, it works by the hammers hitting tuning forks.
@Tarn1968 she was Norman Petty's wife (Norman Petty was Buddy's manager), and her name was Vi. she passed away in 1992, and this video just makes me cry. Keith's words are so true, Paul performed that very soulfully, and Vi ended it all with that touching performance :')
Thank you for sharing. Just finished watching it all, and was absolutely fascinating. Amazing how a young fellow could do so much in a short, short time. Most of all, end up leaving a legacy that would carry on for generations to come. Rave on, Buddy !!
What made Buddy and the Crickets so important to those of us who felt a personal connection to him was the fact that they were all regular guys enjoying what they were creating..BUT never the big stars..with Ego's that ultimately outlived their talent..Elvis was king...Buddy was the Godfather...and like Paul said..(and a huge atta boy for McCartney's producing this).Buddy's music influenced everything we call the Golden Age of Rock and Roll...I still think about him a lot...God Bless Buddy
I would never in a million years have thought I would still be listening to and enjoying Buddy Holly half a century after I first heard him. I those far off days he was THE singer whose latest release we all waited with bated breath to hear. It is impossible to describe the effect his music had on us - it was - to quote a much overused word - awesome.. Today, I am amazed at the primitive recording techniques that - against all the odds - magically produced the most exquisite sounds.
Sir Paul! You really did a great job of bringing to light more about this great young artist that went away far too early-leaving a stunned group of fans, family, and fellow musicians scratching their heads, wondering....if Buddy's feet had ever touched the ground in the first place. Thank you for telling the story right.
Thanks so much for posting this great documentary. It's so well done; the ending is so sad. I'm sitting here mourning over a tragedy that happened over fifty years ago. We love you Buddy.
At 3:53, it sounds like a studio outtake. Whoever has these should seriously release them. "The Buddy Holly Rehearsal Tapes". I have this documentary on VHS. Interesting and entertaining.
Without a doubt the definitive documentary on Buddy's life...beautifully shot, subtle and yet poignant. Paul has done many things over the years to tarnish his legacy, but this makes up for most of them. There will never be another Buddy Holly...but we should be grateful that there once was...his music remains as timeless as the stars.
Thanks for posting this...and happy birthday buddy...
Thanks SOOO much for posting this. I thoroughly enjoyed it! Wish part 9 was available. Damn jerks. Glad the other parts are here though. RIP Buddy, Bopper and Ritchie. 3 damn good musicians gone way to soon. May their music and legacy live on for many more years.
fucken assholes blocked part 9 due to copyright dont worry assholes your presence is no longer needed thanks to the internet, blocking a vid that would increase your own sales for copyrights is plain stupid...
Paul makes sure the Buddy Holly estate gets all thats due to them-hes never been stingy with his money or rights to music.-he doesnt have his company go taking down youtube videos and Apple was made to let people try to record music wihtout having to beg other record companies like the Beatles who got rejected by so many record labels. The Beatles were inspired by Buddy-just shows how great they though he was-they respected him
I really enjoyed this. It's so cool to hear first hand accounts of that era. It's worth watching the entire thing. Unfortunately part 9 is unavailable due to copyright claims, oh well.
i was 14 when Buddy died and it was an unbelievable shock. His music was all about love and life and I was not prepared to deal with death and dying. Then Eddie Cochran was killed, Chuck went to prison, Elvis went in the army and Little Richard got religion and it really did feel like the music had died. By the time Elvis came out of the army and started making all those crap movies it seemed we were back in the oldtin pan alley of our parents' era again. The golden age of rock and roll was over
@TheRiverIsEvrywhere ive just finished reading his life story and it went something like this, when he made one of his first records and they had to file the paperwork with the record company or copyright people or someone like that the person filling out the paperwork made a mistake in the spelling and i believer they just kept it that way.
Paul McCartney always looks like he is hurting that he has outlived so many of his fellow musicians of the era.
What a tragic story. Shit. Makes you wonder what these 3 men would've been able to produce had they got on the bus and lived out their lives as they should have...
Wonderful. The colour home movie with Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee & Buddy Holly is fantastic, and interviews with Keith Richards are always a pleasure to watch, as it is listening to the songs of the immortal Buddy Holly.
Thank you so much for posting this, you've done a terrific job
Strange trivia: Mr Keith Moon overdosed on the prescription drugs that were given to him to help his alcoholism after attending the premier screening of this documentary.
It actually wasn't after the screening of this documentary. It was after the screening of a movie called "The Buddy Holly Story" starring Gary Busey in 1978. This film was made in reaction to that film.
I remember when this was originally aired on BBC, there were interviews with Maria Elena, how come they were removed in this version, does anyone know?
Most likely because Buddy's brothers Larry and Travis have had a bone to pick with the fact that Maria Elena controls much of Buddy's business dealings and the way she's cashing in is in conflict with the Holley family. I don't know if Paul OKed the removal of her interviews from this footage.
I liked Paul's little version of Words of Love. A good tribute. Nice to know that one of the most respected musicians/songwriters of all time, of the greatest band of all time, IMO, has heroes too! And Buddy was one of his. And to the other comments, if i was gifted as Paul, i might be a little arrogant too. He's only human
Paul is "full of himself" is a square peg, and some people are still trying to fit that square peg into a round hole. The problem is it never fits, because Paul's not a self-seeking, self-serving soul. He's always been a sensitive soul with a big heart. When Paul passes on, and hopefully that won't happen for a long time, the whole world will realize what they've lost.
...and you´re a lucky guy, janken919...watched part 1 to 8...and then????f.......youtube don´t allows me to watch part 9....holy shit...but thx a lot for this documentary...it shows me a man I never know in this kind...and have a nice weekend...
through my dad I got to grow up with Buddy's music in the 90s, and every time I sit down and listen it takes me back to more innocent times...I wonder how things would have turned out if we didn't lose so many great people like Mr. Holley
I was born in Lubbock Texas and still go back their once a year and its really interesting to me because Lubbock really hasnt changed alot in the last 50 years so you can really get a feel for what it was like for Buddy and his band to grow up and turn into what he and the Cricketts became. Forever a legend. RIP Buddy
It's kind of sad, because the lady's just playing that thing all by herself in the end, and it kind of sounds like little lonely church bells or something. RIP in Heaven!
Buddy: The Biography of Buddy Holly (1997), ISBN 0330352237 - anyone in interested in getting a really in-depth look into the life of this utter legend, i strongly suggest you check this biography out :D
WOW I didn't even know this existed. I saw the VH1 Behind the music on "The day the music died" and "The Buddy Holly Story" and things didn't add up.
For instance I didn't know there was a fourth member to Buddy's band. Plus, his drummer and bass player had different names in the movie verses this documentary.
Thank you for uploading this. I really hope it stays up on here. This is a huge piece of Rock n Roll history
It's widely speculated that she really wasn't pregnant and used it as an excuse to get more attention. No one, including Buddy's relatives knew about the baby. You would think if you found out your wife is pregnant, you'd be telling everyone, or at least your parents.
I've been a Buddy fan my whole life, and I really enjoyed watching this series you posted. Especially the rare footage and pictures. He was an amazing musician.
If it's not working it's because Warner thinks they own the rights to "Everyday". They don't of course, McCartney does, but they're having a feud with Youtube and it seems they've claimed the rights to every song ever written, just to annoy people.
I filed a dispute, not sure how much good that will do.
@jthomasbailey thank you indeed for this beautiful post, and Sir P McCartney!
Warner is a bunch of Khazar who have stolen identity from little Judeans. Stealing is their life, not contributing. The rest of us can enjoy music without claiming rights...
@MrPetrucchio Yup. And u cant view those two dudes santos and ?? cant recall it, playing sleep walker on the ed sullivan show. Its supposed to be the original "La Bamba" that ritchie made mad popular, but bc of warner and i think sony feuding over rights u cant view it
@BaalofSouls I understand young artists being protected for making a buck (Bieber is already a slave of a dough-maker), but Buddy is an universal good, rolled for decades, why one should have 'exclusive rights' on him?
Thanks so much for posting this.

It's kind of sad, because the lady's just playing that thing all by herself in the end, and it kind of sounds like little lonely church bells or something. RIP in Heaven!

Does anyone know if Norman Petty's wife, Vi, actually played on Buddy Holly and the Crickets recordings?
peeperdoodle 2 years ago
She played celeste on 'Everyday' and piano on 'Think it over'.

Did Buddy and Maria have any children? The version with Gary Busey, suggested she was pregnet when he died.

She was pregnant when he died but unfortunately she miscarried not long after the crash.

She lost the child when Buddy died.

After Buddy died she had a miscarriage, very sad, because the kid could have been as great as Buddy was!
centipeeds4always 2 years ago
It's widely speculated that she really wasn't pregnant and used it as an excuse to get more attention. No one, including Buddy's relatives knew about the baby. You would think if you found out your wife is pregnant, you'd be telling everyone, or at least your parents.

If it's not working it's because Warner thinks they own the rights to "Everyday". They don't of course, McCartney does, but they're having a feud with Youtube and it seems they've claimed the rights to every song ever written, just to annoy people.
I filed a dispute, not sure how much good that will do.

McCartney or Warner is having a feud with YouTube??
fab4fan5 2 years ago
Warner. I see video after video with nothing but silence because there was a few seconds of some song supposedly owned by Warner.
trylonperisphere 2 years ago
@jthomasbailey doesn't look like anything has been done so far.
How come they can't solve this considering this is a year old?
How come the rest of the 9 part haven't been blocked?
MIKECNW 1 year ago

MrPetrucchio 1 year ago
@jthomasbailey Congrats for filing a dispute, do you need to be a lawyer to do that without getting busted?
