Interestingly, the "June bride" line did somehow find its' way into the final film. NOT, however, a remark that Fields made about Opera-star Kirsten Flagstad! Mitch Leisen & Fields hated each-other, and a second-unit director was brought-in to shoot the Fields' scenes. Leo Robin, who wrote the lyric to "Thanks for the Memory" lived in the same-condo as my grandfather(also a songwriter, at a different-studio),in Westwood, Ca. Leo and I became great-friends and he was a great-guy! R.J.
Big Broadcast of 1938 is infact available on a DVD. It is part of a double Feature about Bob Hope because Big Broadcast was Bob Hope First Film and is where he sings his famous theme song "thanks for the Memories"
Thanks for posting this clip, which was taken during "Big Broadcast of 1938". The man being nasty to Fields was Mitchell Leisen, the director. The two did not get along during production, due mainly to Fields' ad-libbing and basically directing himself, and eventually he would purposely ruin jokes, use profanity and ad-lib private jokes. Leisen suffered a heart attack near the end of shooting, which prompted him to describe Fields as "the mot obstinate, ornery SOB I ever tried to work with."
what a treat! Makes me long for more of this sort/ anyone else have any hitherto-unseen footage of the Great Man?
My guess is this piece was circa 1939-40 perhaps in connection with The Bank Dick would have to dig up info on "Nick" director perhaps Golf course doesn't ring a bell can anyone else place this jewel?
I like your vid clip and I've rated it as awesome. I've done another video clip on some old cigarette cards of 1930's movie stars, including: W.C. Fields , Bing Crosby, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, Clark Gable, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Greta Garbo,Johnny Weismuller, Gary Cooper and Carole Lombard.
I saw a film many years ago, when a actual earthquake hit during filming. You can see the crew scattering but WC keeping a kind of cool head through it.Anybody ever seen that one?
That was a Paramount newsreel segment that supposedly showed Fields on the set of "International House" when the big 1933 Long Beach earthquake struck. Turns out the footage was faked. The quake was real enough, but the newsreel scene was shot a few days AFTER the quake. Newreels were considered as much entertainment as journalism, so the studio execs didn't really think of that sort of deception as unethical. Things haven't changed that much, have they?
Wow, Just when I thought I'd seen it all ... Where on earth did you find this film? "I feel like a June bride ..." way too racey for post-code 1938; Thanks so much for sharing this.
Man to be a fly on the wall back then in Hollywood. Or in this case a tree LOL. Thanks for sharing this.

Fields actually staged that earthquake for a promotional stunt, it wasnt know until much later and everything thought it was real.

The best directors of this type of comic(including the Marx Bros.) learn to stay the hell out of the way.
