I started smoking cigarettes when I was 23. I'd puffed for 5-6 years without inhaling much, and then a girlfriend taught me to inhale. I smoked for 10 years before quitting, with great difficulty.

I think the e-cigarettes are a GREAT idea. It is not the nicotine in tobacco which causes disease and death, it is the tar.

But, "is nicotine bad for you?" In its pure form, nicotine is one of the most toxic of all chemicals, but in low doses, as from smoking a cigarette or e-cigarette, it is NOT.

I had a heart attack at age 30 from smoking, doctors showed me a video while i was in recovery of them putting nicotine on an artery and it coiled up like a snake. Since nicotine is a vascular constrictor even though my cholesterol was normal there was just enough in 1 of my arteries under my heart that 1 minute after lighting up my last time the artery constricted closed and would not reopen. Causing a heart attack requring 2 stints in my chest to reopen. nicotine is bad!

@qoaa I'm sorry to hear about suffering a heart attack so young. Your doctor must have shown you that video to reiterate the necessity of quitting (my uncle, a smoker, had a heart attack at 39. His doctor showed him a video similar to the one you described. Google "nicotine artery reaction". It's the one with a doctor squeezing fat from an aorta). However, it's the carbon monoxide that makes arterial walls sticky. Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor and causes tachycardia, but about as much caffeine.

I smoked for 12 years, started in January 1998. I vividly remember my first cigarette, when and where I smoked it. It felt so good that day, but I felt like a crap after 2 years. I tried to quit since 2004. Maximum time I didn't smoke was one month. In October 2010, I started to go to gym, every once in two days, and haven't smoked since then. 6 months!!! And, I don't want to smoke anymore now.

Some "flue cured" and perique tobacco flavors can do a good job of replicating the taste of a cigarette, but most people find that they prefer other flavors like coffee or tea to create a well-rounded full flavor that they'll like even BETTER when their taste improves from not smoking. :)
