If it's really thin, you should measure it in mm to be more accurate and triple that.

But don't use the 1.5 inches measurement to draw the other two sides of your square. You should use perhaps half an inch instead. Just experiment around and see what'll work best for you. Just keep cutting out rectangles and wrapping them around your headband until it looks right. Then, you can finally make your ears! (:
