Alexander had already conquered Afghanistan by then. Yet, Afghanistan, to be precise Gandhara (present day Kandahar region) was still under Greek control, under Seleucus Nicator, who was finally defeated by Chandragupta, from Eastern India (Magadha). @gazakind Actually the Taliban movement started around 1993-94 while the US support of Muj ended around 1989 or so when Soviets left so we are not sure if the US directly supported the Taliban or if any of the Muj in the 80's became Taliban in the 90's. Maybe some did. We do know that Osama was a recruiter and financier of the Muj in the 80's so he had links with the CIA then. The only US weapons the CIA supplied the Muj with were Stingers but mostly all were Soviet-style weapons.

Yet, Afghanistan, to be precise Gandhara (present day Kandahar region) was still under Greek control, under Seleucus Nicator, who was finally defeated by Chandragupta, from Eastern India (Magadha). He did what Afghans failed to do.

@Nperez1986 Are you speaking based ont the movie? Alexander defeated Indians very easily. He had a lot of trouble in Afghanistan for four years he had to fight in Afghanistan. He even informed his mother about the troubles he faced in Afghanistan. His mother advised him to get out of Afg as soon as he can. He never conqured all of Afghanistan.

Afghanistan didn't exsist till the 19th century..it's like calling the Roman Empire italy or England. Yes He did have a hard time there. The persians use the (Afghan) calvary in their ranks. There's an awesome book I recommend, the Military History of Afghanistan, from Alexander the Great all the Way to present times

Afghanistan survives due to its ruthless terrain and type of people. the Brits, and Russians were defeated there, I wouldn't say Alexander, he used Afghan calvary after he defeated, he created an Alexandria in Afghan. The Indians took the most out of him.This country is the middle of where Empires fight. Look at Pakistan, Iran, and others, they will proxy wars to their interest

The Soviets made huge progresses in Afghanistan. They helped elevate Afghans out of the dark ages. They banned the burqa, improved education and health care, built schools, vastly improved infrastructure, raised the literacy rate, etc. Under Soviet influence, Afghanistan was never more peaceful and secure. People from Afghanistan know this. The Americans totally worked against the Afghans and helped the Muslim extremists bring them back into the stone age. Now burqas, drugs, and sharia r back.

@gazakind Actually the Taliban movement started around 1993-94 while the US support of Muj ended around 1989 or so when Soviets left so we are not sure if the US directly supported the Taliban or if any of the Muj in the 80's became Taliban in the 90's. Maybe some did. We do know that Osama was a recruiter and financier of the Muj in the 80's so he had links with the CIA then. The only US weapons the CIA supplied the Muj with were Stingers but mostly all were Soviet-style weapons.

If anybody wanted to really help Afghanistan they should have supported the Soviet effort back during the last Afghan war.
Contrary to what western media likes to show, the Soviets really did invest money, material and know how to help make progress in Afghanistan.
Especially the education could have opened up many doors for young Afghani people.
Soviet agenda was also to get rid of religion - had they succeeded, a secular Afghanistan might have had a real chance of a peaceful future.
