  • At the beggining I'm thinking her dress isn't that bad, but then at 2:00 she stands up...But oh well Diana could wear only a towel... and...........*ahem* still be a fierce Queen of the Night.

  • I love how she gets uprooted at the beggining like a newly harvested lettuce! lovely -__-

  • Why does the very beautiful Diana Damrau always end up with the hidious green outfits???

  • She had laryngitis

now you cant tell me that this WASN'T AMAZING

  • gotta admit it was a beast entrance ^_^

  • if anything she's a green drag queen... with a female soprano's voice... I love this production... i recognize the tenor from Candide... he's adorable! :) Diana is a wonderful colorful (in more ways than one) character as well.

  • Who made the règie? Martha Stewart? Wonderful Queen of the Night!

  • i've grown fond of that dress... i think she's looking adorable and beautiful! i've always liked colorful things anyway lol

  • hahahahaahahahahah xD laughing at the salad festival they made at the comments...

but for me she looks more like a lettuce... the Green Oak Leaf Lettuce type!!

thinking on the bright side, as a Queen, if she ever get lost somewhere in the night... they will find her very quickly! xD

  • I've already commented, i know, but... opera singers give so much. I wonder if she wanted to wear that dress. I mean, where do they get bright green from Queen of the NIGHT? lol

  • Die konigin der Kale.

  • Gorgeous voice, hideous costume.

    Very...vegetable like, truly.

  • She is supposed to be the Queen of the Night, not Queen of the Forest. That dress looks like it was borrowed from Lady Gaga. But I can't complain; I love her voice so MUCH!!

  • She looks like a giant cabbage, but Diana is always beautiful!!!

  • I think her dress is not as worst as Natalie Dessay's one in Salzburg Festival in 1997

  • Fluorescent singing brocoli.

  • OPERA BROCCOLI.

  • If I had to wear that costume...I would be that angry, too.

(By the way, Damrau's voice is INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!)

  • i turned the same shade of green hearing her messy coloratura.

  • Look ahead it's the broccoli queen in his broccoli world singing with the voice of a goddess. :D

  • In that costume, she looks like the Phillie Phanatic's sister.

  • Is this the Nickelodeon production? It's sad that such a voice is wasted on a woman with no taste.

  • whoa

    great singing

    and nice radioactive dress

  • Fantastic coloratura soprano, maybe the best at this moment, but what an awfull dress.

  • lettuce not be too hasty in our criticisms. Maybe this design sprouted from someone's lsd induced dreams. :p

  • Great works of art allows for interpretation and stay relevant. Shakespear has been reinterpret just as much as the Flute. I have heard that business men read the Art of War.

  • I wonder how many sopranos can hit that high F cleanly.

  • quello verde assomiglia al mio compagno

  • The dress is just ridiculous, I would have put it in fire and say that it was an accident.

  • Broccoli has a dark green color that's more like a head of lettuce

  • i would have punched the director in the face if she thought of me wearing that..

  • I like this broccoli like dress. Also the broccoli like head is not that bad. However she moves as if she was not happy with all this vegetables on her! :-)

  • Damrau is indeed amazing, but it's too bad they used a broccoli colored carpet for her dress...

  • Die Broccolikönigin...

  • is that Paul Groves?

  • @Loismustdie26 yes.

  • Love Damrau. Do not love her booger dress.

  • Death to broccoli, I say !

  • diana is stunningly brilliant as she always is... except for this broccoli colour thing..

  • The hyperkinetic, overdone, over the top school of operatic acting that seems to be the norm today is no doubt the fault of directors who are obviously not musicians. Anyone with any understanding of music would know to trust that it's all there already in the music and the words. The acting would not then be a distraction but would actually help illuminate and express the music and the text. The garish production is too awful for words.

  • Devine!

Bitte helfen!

  • @Ma3Hu1 versuchs mit imslp dort gibt es sie ;)

  • Evil broccoli...

  • The voice is wonderful, the character is amazing, but the dress is very ridicle because it does not match the figure of the evil Queen of the Night

  • Not the best queen of the night I´ve heard.....

  • @birgitnilsson And who would that be?

  • @LordHettrick That would be Natalie Dessay at Garrnier in 2000 for this aria, while I prefer Damrau at Covent Garden for the Der Hölle Rache

  • Damrau performing Queen of the broccoli, how gracious.

  • THis is the song, lalalala, bigbirds song...

  • Whats with the afro lol still love diana

  • Paddymusic, thank you very much for uploading this wonder

  • if the dress was another colour, it would look ok, as long she gets to lose the puke-covered afro.

lol, at 3:20 she looks like she's crossing her eyes.

  • So... green...

  • OMG. ITS THE QUEEN OF THE BROCCOLI!!

  • The most perfect vocals for the Queen of The Night. Brava! There's Sutherland for Lucia. Now we have Damrau for the Queen of the Night. Flawless high F!

  • @karlleo listen to Cristina Deutekom. These are the perfect vocals for me. She's not so good at acting as Damrau, but her vocals are incredible!

  • @karlleo @karlleo listen to Cristina Deutekom. These are the perfect vocals for me. She's not so good at acting as Damrau, but her vocals are incredible!

  • Even dressed like Queen of the recycled M&S carrier bags she's exquisite. Seldom has passion enlivened Mozart like the love of this woman for his music. Remember that this acting is seen by most people from around forty foot away, and as the night is orange, green, red and black she's got to jump around to be seen.

  • I did like this comment about a head of broccoli. But Damarau rocks it, like ever!! :D

  • i love how she gets into the role!

  • Love her performance. But that hat makes her look like she glued her head on a cauliflower. Anyway, it's a marvelous performance.

  • her hat kept bopping him in the nose.... disgusting color... nuf said.

  • Salad + 80's = Damrau's costume.

  • The green dress is like a fluorescent poison.

Decor and costume are unusual but I find them interesting...

  • her costume looks like a sea sponge

  • Those costumes, that set.. what on earth were they thinking? Poor people. Doesn't harm Diana's gorgeous voice and skills though!

  • lol i agree with everyone, awful costumes ? who thought bright green would work for.. the queen of night ?

  • That's a pretty crazy hat.

  • So I guess the message is... vegetables are evil? At least Damrau's amazing.

  • @Jaydoggy531 hahahaha :) and yeah, she's amazing!

  • Love you Diana but no need for the cabage hat!

  • What a horrible setting, despite the good performance. If I ever find myself attending to such a hideous setting of an opera, I'd listen till the end with eyes shut.

  • Diana has a very beautiful long blond hair, they could just avoid the grass and put a green accesory in her head, in that case she would have looked wonderful, and not like a tree, because the dress is gorgeaus but the head does not help

  • Diana has a beautiful blond long hair, the could just avoid the grass and put just a green accesory in her head and let her show her gorgeus blond hair, in that case she would have looked wonderful

  • ..eine unglaubliche Performance. Diana ist die Königin der Königinnen!!

  • Brilliant performance, but that costume makes her look like a salad. Perhaps a head of broccoli?

  • @wondersif HHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, LMAO

  • @vscanzi Whw do I have to get negative avaliations on my comment? Although her outfit is seriously funny, I really admire her performance. Chill out, people.

  • @wondersif hahaah LOL when I first saw her costume I started laughing, but when I read your comment I bursted!

  • Or perhaps an entire asparagus? :o)Remember Alf?

  • @wondersif That is hilarious. No props for production designer, Mozart would turn in his grave, but Damrau, amazing.

  • oh no she didn`t!!!!!!! that was just perfect!!!

    She's dressed as a lettuce.

  • 5:38, hear that power

  • very very very nice perform! =D

but i think that dress isn't very ''night'' it looks more like a ''queen of fruit'' xDxD

diana is the best!! great queen of the night :))))

  • That's it!!! She really singing...EAT YOUR BROCCOLI!

  • Hahahahahaha!

  • ...and she's supposed to be the QUEEN OF THE NIGHT??? Looks like a dominatrix to me! Makes it interesting though. A little "hammy" too....but just my opinion....

  • @mortitio True, but La Damrau's florid style of acting is her trademark, and she has the charisma, physical gifts, and vocal chops to pull it off. She She is riveting in this repertoire and brings out the fun, popular entertainment side of opera, which historically was like Hollywood before cinema existed. .

  • Die Oide is a Wahnsinn, singt urguat und spielt auch noch!

  • i'm thinking this is like a storybook, children's imagination version! only thing that makes sense!!!! the dress is amazing!!!

  • The Salzburger Festspiele has done a lot of odd versions of the magic flute, and honestly, i have the impression that since they have to stage an opera every year, and mozart can't write any new ones, they simply try to overdo each other with the scening every year, just to get some variation. I can't imagine how this narcotic funfair-fest can possibly be relevant to the history :-P It's Damrau, it's lovely song, everything is professional... but the costumes and scenery? Pointless.

  • Someone can explain why this production is so... different????

    Thanks.

  • You have to wonder what she thought when she first saw her costume.

  • Something about acid rain!!!!

Elizabeth Tryon has removed your answer to my comment!!!! I asked her to post Martern aller Arten!!!! Obviously it was a joke... But is amazing to see what she does!!!!

Have you already seen her QON??? Horrible!!!! She disabled ratings... But I find her so funny!!!

  • Lol, I left her a couple of comments on that too, including "Please, do yourself a favor and take this down." But she removed all of my comments. She is awful, though, isn't she!

  • Let me clarify: "She" the awful singer is not Diana Damrau but Elizabeth Tryon, sorry.

  • ahahahahahahahaha It was supposed!!!!

Diana knows how to sing the Queen of the night!!!!!!! I don't know why Tryon posted the video with the QoN!!!!

It's really orrible!!!!! Her high notes are like a guinean pig voice!!!!

    She has not good taste!!!!

    luckily there's Diana!!!!

  • It can only be described in one keyboard abbreviation;

    o_O

  • She shines despite being Queen of the Broccoli

  • the conductors tempo is slow i prefer the speed in the met version

  • this is theatre !brava to costumer for thinking out of the box!

  • Comment removed

  • Who is the stage director ?

  • She's not supposed to be a cabbage.

  • ....who is responsible for making Diana Damrau look like a piece of usidedown, lime green Brocolli?!

  • does she really need to wear that cauliflower-like gown? i think there is so much more beautiful gown uited for that performance rather than that odd and veggie looking crap...

  • Wonderful Diana of course, but

    KILL THE DRESS RESPONSIBLE!

  • Cheers, Diana, you never cease to amaze me. With German her mother tongue, it seems like this role was literally written for Damrau. wonderful. (crazy costume however!)

  • Awful costume, great singer.

  • not sure what substance they were on ,but Id like some.

  • this show must be seen under mushies effects =P

  • Dear director: The Queen of the Night is not Papageno.

  • ROFL. That's the funniest thing I've read in a while, but so true... Seems like he missed that memo.

  • @K189T hahaha the dress is like the Queen of the lettuces

  • cette robe...

  • ahahaha it looks like a spoof of the magic flute. great damrau as usual.

  • Wow I do love Damrau so much... but this is by far the worst production of this show I've seen thus far. This seems far more random for a setting. I respect modernizations - but this is not a modernization... this is simply a stage director thinking (s)he is special.

  • Terrible! There is only one Queen: Elena Mosuc!

  • Comment removed

  • Elena is really amazing as Queen of the Night! :-)

  • PLZ.

    Diana is soooooo much better!

    hahaha!

  • ...in your opinion.

  • So I have to understand that Mozart never knew how were to be sung the arias of the Queen?, or was Mousac who played the role in 1791? Poor me, all these years thinking that was Constanza's sister the one who sung it.

  • great damrau, but it the magic flute not the magic cucumber...

    Damrau, formidable.

  • Dear director: The Queen of the Night is not Papageno.

  • she's also supposed to not be a cabbage

  • Warf warf warf!!!

  • ya... she's definitely a fluorescent cabbage! xDxD

  • Wow- Damrau is simply one of the best sopranos of our time!

  • will someone save this custume designers from themselves... please... have you seem the other productions from the other Salzburger Festspielen?

  • The costume is outrageous but I think the whole production is like that. I also read that Damrau was sick so that impacts her vocal quality, but still impressive.

  • She was ill while singing this?? Unbelievable! She is still amazing beyond belief... LOVE her....but I have to say that I don't understand the costumes.

  • She looks like the Drag Queen of the night!

  • as any good queen of the night should. ;)

  • this isn't Der Holle Rache...sheesh, get your arias right...it's O Zittre Nicht...and don't knock Damrau...she and Dessay cannot be compared in such loose terms like "talent"...they are both excellent musicians

  • It's like... "Saturday Damrau Fever", lol!

Anyways, she's the best soprano ever, it really doesn't matter if the dress is a little... Disco-like, does it?

  • I LOVE THIS WOMAN

    her voice is outstanding!!!!

    GO DIANA!!!

  • perfekt!

  • If only we could all wear acid green gowns like that! I did a production of Little Shop Of Horrors and think we used the same material for our man-eating plant. Lovely, just lovely...

  • Gorgeous voice. I love her performance

  • The Queen just back from Carnivale and didn't have time to change.

  • this is ghetto.

  • voice and acting impeccable thanks G.. but the folies bergeres costume !!!!!!!!!!!! for the queen of the night .... what on earth was the costume director thinking of or was it a mix up with papageno's costume ?????

  • 4:37 Tamino thinks, "Do I dare touch her? I might catch whatever she has!"

  • Is this the same 2006 Salzburg performance where she wears the tight-fitting green cap and a dark green outfit singing Der Holle Rache (as posted by Lilith89ibz)?

  • Who cares if she looks like the "Acid Queen" from "Tommy"? Her voice is fantastic, and her acting - unusual in an opera singer - superb.

  • OH...MY...GAWD!!!!!! I take it back! The costume director should be tarred and feathered, drawn and quartered, hung and thrown to the pigeons! Who can take a demented Queen seriously in a neon green shag carpet, and afro?

  • Agreed! When will we get over this addiction to nonsense?

  • How the Queen of the Night Stole Christmas!

lol couldn't help myself :D. Lovelly vocals as always though.

  • hahaha hahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • its not JUST an affro its a GREEN affro! :) ahah

  • the queen of the night has a freakin' aphro.

  • the queen of night has an aphroh

  • Doch.....wunderbar, ich hab' alles genoßen!! Vielen dank.

  • Dmarau is ,as always, amazing, BUT I cannot stop myself from saying that this Queen of the Nigh costume is much more appropriated to "Queen of the Vegetables". Nothing a
