How old were you when you saw this movie? i agree she was hot and John Saxton did a great performance, this was more on the psychological side than slashing.
I was jogging in Toronto and we went by this house!! I was so excited!! I wish I'd had my camera! If I go back I will put up a video of it :) This movie scared the shit out of me when I was younger.
@REKONBALL2 No, it was not, but it was the first to have an unkillable antagonist. I believe that is what made it stick out so much, plus the lack of gore. Still my favorite slasher film of all time. :)
@JVcrow44 i think the thing that made Halloween stick out more than black Christmas is because Halloween was made in the US, and black Christmas was made in Canada. and Halloween got a MUCH wider release. most people didn't even know Black Christmas existed until about 10 years ago. and i think Halloween having an unkillable killer is what made it way less scarier than Black Christmas because you know there is no way he is going to die and he is just gonna keep coming back. that is boring.
@REKONBALL2 Well the not dieing thing was new in the 70's, thats what i ment by him being an unkillable antagonist. Before Halloween, the villans in horror films would be defeated by the end of the movie; Halloween opened up the possibility of a evil that just keeps coming back for more. Keep, in mind this was a fresh concept in this time; before Jason, Freddy, Chucky etc... would use this for cheap scares and numerous sequels. People didn't see this coming; it scared them shit less.
This movie is amazing...! I love horror movies, (though they do not frighten me) and i have to say, this movie does not only keep you guessing, but it literally sends shivers down your spine. This is a true horror movie!
I heard about this from seeing Pheleos on thatguywiththeglasses review the remake. And now I'm really interested in seeing this! But I have to say this - this really reminds me of the Simpsons Treehouse of Horror episode where Bart's twin Hugo was locked in an attic for his whole life, then broke out and started killing everyone (and wanted to sew himself to Bart for some reason). I tried to look into it but it wasn't mentioned that that's what it was parodying so...coincidence, or what? :s
What an awesome, messed up thriller this was! I always hated it when people who know a little about horror films say " 'Halloween' was the first slasher flick". Even if those people discounted the entire 10 years of Giallo (Italian slashers) that came before 'Halloween', how can they ignore this 1974 gem? If you know someone who says this, you need to show them 'Black Xmas'.
This movie is still scary to this day, especially if you watch it in the dark in the winter, that house in the movie is creepy I love it, the remake was bad but had really good death scenes I thought
A brilliant 70's horror masterpiece! Olivia Hussey was smokin hot in this. I was so depressed when the director Bob Clark was tragically killed in an auto accident back in 2007.
What do you think of old school remakes like The Thing, The Fly, The Blob, Invasion of the body Snatchers, Cat People, Invaders from Mars, Cape Fear and Night of the Living Dead? why not piss on them?
13 people were hanged by crane hooks while the other 13 were suffocated and placed next to attic windows to make the 26 people that thumbed this down.

@teenwitch09094 when watching a slasher film i just ignore the low quality acting i mean at the end of the day acting isn't important for a horror movie. And your right, older films seemed to always have a darker tone and atmosphere. Re-makes are more concerned in making the violence more extreme and creat a much bigger body count. And in any case in some cases the acting is above average whereas new horror i think the acting is worse than 70's or 80's anyway, with some excceptions of course.
this move is sooo fucking good!!! i would even say its better than halloween. it is sooo creepy knowing the guy is in the house, watching them the whole time. and having it just be a normal guy that is insane is waay scarier than a guy in a mask that gets shot and stabbed and burned abd beheaded but just keeps coming back. that was lame. i could watch this ever day and it still would scare the shit out of me!! it is sooo creepy!

great trailer, but it gives away too much. I saw the film not knowing what to expect and it gave me nightmares. Like he said, "if this doesn't make your skin crawl, it's on too tight."
I miss the horror films of this era, they were far scarier than what people can come up with today. I mean, just the trailer creeps me out. It's rare that sort of thing can happen nowadays

@k4t5 well, John Carpenter was inspired by this movie to make Halloween. They're both excellent films. ignorant people might give Halloween all the credit, but the guy who made Halloween loved this movie and knows better.
The trailer is very good, much better than the actual film. If you hadn't guessed, it's about a bunch o' sorority girls who get off'ed by a psycho. It deserves credit for being the first "murderer on the rampage" films, but it has numerous flaws including 1) characters you really don't care about, 2) cops so lackluster that Chief Wiggum from "The Simpsons" looks like Dirty Harry, 3) the tendancy for the plot to plod. Still, it's better than the remake.
@FiendsInRedSatin1 ok none of those flaws are true. most of them were just opinions! this is the greatest horror film ever made and dont you dare try to say it sucked!!
@FiendsInRedSatin1 From one horror buff to another--I'm critiquing your critique: 1) Olivia Hussey, Margot Kidder & the virgin's father are very deep, sympathetic characters. A lot better than the homogeneously pretty, smart-ass white girls in the cover. 2) the director wanted to do comedy & added some comic elements, including the cops, to balance the horror. 3) well, you might have something there, but amazing moments make it worth it in the end.
@NazTb0y horror buffs can disagree, and we'll have to disagree on this. I just didn't find any of the characters sympathetic. Adding a little comedy can take the edge off, but I didn't think it worked well in this film. The thing with the cops being so inept also took away from the film. Effective horror must have a believability about it, and having the cops behave professionally would have helped the film.
@FiendsInRedSatin1 well, maybe your skin's on too tight. trust me, there's nothing unbelievable about inept cops, especially in a university town where they're used to nothing going on. As for the characters, I just don't get how you can have a heart & not find any of them sympathetic. Do you really think the remake did a better job with the characters? They were all bitchy, pretty white girls. At least the characters in the original were real people.
@NazTb0y I really hated the remake. The police were even more inept (remember the scene in which the cops are told that there has been a murder and they just shrug it off in order to work a traffic wreck?), the characters make truly stupid decisions, and the characters are just nasty people. I'll grant you that while I didn't find the original crop from the original as sympathetic, I did see them as real people. Not so for the remake's characters. They were just cardboard waiting to be cut.
@FiendsInRedSatin1 wow why does everyone think they left her alone!?!?! they didn't leave her alone. they left the room and turned off the light so she could get some rest. they didn't leave the house. they are still right out side the door. and plus they don't know that the killer is still in the house. remember, they think the killer was that girls boyfriend. they don't know he is still in the attic. just because the people watching the movie know, doesn't mean the people IN the movie know.
The commercial fails at life, and probably pushes off interested viewers. But the film itself is absolutely amazing. It's scary in all the right ways. If not, then you'll at least find the directing, camera work, music, acting, etc. to be well-thought out. One of my favorite horror movies, let alone, movies of all time.
jjad cahh nasty so ig;vborivnerntivoentovbenboinevpoineo;fivn;oeinfv;oenirv;oeinv;oinev;oinev;oinefo;ine;ofinv;oeinfv;oienfv;oeinfv;oiedfov;ine;oihv;oie;ohrv;oih;oifh;ovheo;rhv;oehrv;ohero;ihvoerhiv;oeihvr;oihe;oih;oeihv;ohe;ovihe;ovih;oeihv;oihev;oho;hiev;ohev;oiiiivehhh;oihev;oihev;oh;oveh;oevho;hvoivehoevho;hevihveeliuvheivhuihuifvhevvuhfiuffuufuufufuufuufufiufufiuhfgihgfhireiuhreiuvhihdfhvihfiviheihvehivheiuheivhieurviehivhiehvieuievuhviehrviuheivuheihuiefuiheirhfuieujhviehrieururururuuuuui
I just found out that the man who directed this film, Bob Clark, later went on to direct Baby Geniuses and Super Baby Geniuses. I think my head is going to explode.
It's just, the thing with modern horror movies is the repeated use of the same type of characters. Stop using young people as victims (I.e. sorority girls, college students on vacation, teenagers) we're sick of these young kids being slaughtered. Good old fashioned horror movies had adults as the victims a lot, even senior citizens. I'm sick of seeing a blonde college girl having sex then dying right after.
If I EVER became a movie director (which I probably will never be) I'd make a horror movie so scary that no one else could even think of it now. I'll try my best to bring back the good old fasioned horror and have both adults and children as the victims. The killer? I don't even know yet...
I agree with you. I've watched horrors from the silent era to today while I enjoy an occasional slasher, but in the 2000's especially that genre and the toture movies are lacking any REAL terror. That said this is a slasher film that uses fear of the unseen which I consider the most effective type of horror. The killer is never shown and there's little to no jump scares. The Christmas setting isn't used much, but at least there's no candy cane in eye kills or something like that.
@MyidolGwen I'm suprised you watch these movies based on the type of victims. I watch horror films and only consider them good if they have a decent storyline. We are all human, it shouldn't matter the victim's age, its the motive behind the killers, the setting, and situation that intrigues me the most. Just watching horror films to be scared is kind of stupid. I'm not saying I like all movies these days either, but some horror films nowadays are much more believeable and thought provoking.
@MyidolGwen I agree with the whole sex thing..but its not as intresting when its older people getting killed. Also alot of the viewers are teenagers and young adults so they can relate to the characters more. Which is more intresting to younger viewers.
@MyidolGwen Some how, chainsaw wielding psycho in a "nursing home", just doesn't have the same excitment factor, or appeal as in a college, summer camp, etc. At least young people can run/fight back. How boring would it be watching a guy run around hacking up 80yo Alzheimer patients? Poor old farts wouldn't even know what's going on.
Old man: "Are you here to trim the hedges?"
Monster: "NO! I am here to trim you head! Buwaaaa ha ha ha!"
@MyidolGwen I know what you mean. Though sometime I like it when the biggest sluts die but when you use it too much it gets boring and being a teenage girl myself I think it's sexist. In classics it's anyone and everyone what the hell happend to that?!
@MyidolGwen That's not the major issue I have with these modern thriller types. The fact that they only use the technique which will much more guarantee of success in the box office. Now it's always never to be view as a fully commit acting or directer rolling for those thrillers. Even when it's a fresh, ready new take of a script, it'll be something fully developed and that's just not the hand-made natural scream paint horror we'd like to buy in as one of our collection.
And that's one of the reasons why there're so many remakes, and reboots out there. They won't stop coming back to make these until this new boring attitude they have with thrillers are down right killed off, straightens up, and that's when we can finally have us new cult films to watch. That's when these pure evil in dvd boxes will again be coming to us fresh out of the making.
@MyidolGwen I have a couple theories on that. One is that people have gotten so damn promiscuous, that this is an attempt to try and scare some morals into people. My second theory is that they think that if they keep doing the same characters as past movies did, that it'll become redundant or cliche.
Most people call Jamie Lee Curtis the Scream Queen. Well, this movie came before Halloween, and OLIVIA HUSSEY CAN SCREAM! People who call Jamie Lee Curtis the scream queen have not heard Olivia Hussey's lungs at work!
This scared the hell out of me when I watched it the first time, and I still can't even watch the trailer without getting creeped out. This is one seriously frightening movie.
thats the idea of classic horror ..damn you all like the same shit : scream , saw..all based on real horror, friday the 13th 1to 8 and halloween 1to6 thats it.
The shrill metallic ringing of the old telephones in movies like this make it even scarier. My favorite part of this movie is the phones incessant ringing.
In my opinion, YES, Black Christmas is ONE OF THEE TOP SLASHER films of ALL TIME. However, in my opinion, THE ONE that "OFFICIALLY STARTED" the "slasher" film was, and ALWAYS WILL BE, 1960's Psycho.
This is one of those movies (not to be confused with the lousy remake) thats best to watch by yourself at night with all the lights off. Be prepared to jump if the phone rings.
i cant even bring myself to watch the full trailer i stopped half way through cuz its too scary....did they show this trailer on national TV? im a fuckin adult and i cant even watch the trailer!
I do believe this is one of the first movies to popularize the "Sight from the killers" view. From there Halloween and Friday the 13th followed suit. I actually liked this film. Sure, lots of flaws but its a horror flick not a multi-billion dollar Hollywood crap film :)
@hof1987 Not at all. Quite disappointing, actually. It's not horrible, but it's nowhere compared to the original. If you haven't already, I'd recommend watching it. It's disgusting too. ><

FiendsInRedSatin1 1 year ago
@FiendsInRedSatin1 well, maybe your skin's on too tight. trust me, there's nothing unbelievable about inept cops, especially in a university town where they're used to nothing going on. As for the characters, I just don't get how you can have a heart & not find any of them sympathetic. Do you really think the remake did a better job with the characters? They were all bitchy, pretty white girls. At least the characters in the original were real people.
NazTb0y 1 year ago
@NazTb0y I really hated the remake. The police were even more inept (remember the scene in which the cops are told that there has been a murder and they just shrug it off in order to work a traffic wreck?), the characters make truly stupid decisions, and the characters are just nasty people. I'll grant you that while I didn't find the original crop from the original as sympathetic, I did see them as real people. Not so for the remake's characters. They were just cardboard waiting to be cut.

Ugghh, How exactly did John Saxon behave unprofessionally?
suny123boy1 4 months ago
@suny123boy1 would any good cop leave a survivor of a murder spree by herself just moments after it was supposedly over? I don't think so.

was this movie a documentary shot in real time, with actual murders caught on film? no, so who cares?

@MutantX123 I care given I want to be entertained when I see a film.

@MyidolGwen
If I EVER became a movie director (which I probably will never be) I'd make a horror movie so scary that no one else could even think of it now. I'll try my best to bring back the good old fasioned horror and have both adults and children as the victims. The killer? I don't even know yet...
Mewtwo465 1 year ago
@MyidolGwen
The Christmas setting isn't used much, but at least there's no candy cane in eye kills or something like that.
balrog13571 1 year ago

Which is more intresting to younger viewers.
loovemexx3 1 year ago
@MyidolGwen Some how, chainsaw wielding psycho in a "nursing home", just doesn't have the same excitment factor, or appeal as in a college, summer camp, etc. At least young people can run/fight back. How boring would it be watching a guy run around hacking up 80yo Alzheimer patients? Poor old farts wouldn't even know what's going on.
Old man: "Are you here to trim the hedges?"
Monster: "NO! I am here to trim you head! Buwaaaa ha ha ha!"

gjc82071 10 months ago 2
@MyidolGwen I know what you mean. Though sometime I like it when the biggest sluts die but when you use it too much it gets boring and being a teenage girl myself I think it's sexist. In classics it's anyone and everyone what the hell happend to that?!
teenwitch09094 9 months ago
@MyidolGwen That's not the major issue I have with these modern thriller types. The fact that they only use the technique which will much more guarantee of success in the box office. Now it's always never to be view as a fully commit acting or directer rolling for those thrillers. Even when it's a fresh, ready new take of a script, it'll be something fully developed and that's just not the hand-made natural scream paint horror we'd like to buy in as one of our collection.
BarlowEnter 8 months ago
And that's one of the reasons why there're so many remakes, and reboots out there. They won't stop coming back to make these until this new boring attitude they have with thrillers are down right killed off, straightens up, and that's when we can finally have us new cult films to watch. That's when these pure evil in dvd boxes will again be coming to us fresh out of the making.
BarlowEnter 8 months ago
@MyidolGwen I have a couple theories on that. One is that people have gotten so damn promiscuous, that this is an attempt to try and scare some morals into people. My second theory is that they think that if they keep doing the same characters as past movies did, that it'll become redundant or cliche.
