  • I'm independently home-schooled (My parents teach it and preach it.), so one time I thought I would get a little lee-way when I did three (same process) problems perfectly, and then ignored the last part of the last problem because I felt like being lazy. *facepalm* I got a big "The world doesn't work this way!" lecture. Yeahhhhhhhhh.....

  • Oh my god, maths is probably the best thing that a person can do...

It's like meditation, newspaper puzzle, philosophy, dungeons and dragons and sex all in one.

You'll be surprised how much you can do with your mind and what you can appreciate and hence you stop caring about conformity and depending on other people for a good life.

It's the best thing that a person can do. You just need to give it time. PERIOD

  • good at math->Makes As->prestigious college->college degree->high paying job->chicks

    Math definitely gets you chicks.

  • I am very confused, but luckily i am good at math :)

  • yea...i'm just going to stick with calculators.

  • I'm confused...

  • ...Holy... Shit...

  • Comment removed

  • I have never been so confused. So many numbers in such little time.

  • to think ive been wasting all this time *looks at fingers in depression* damn elementary tricks

  • Blew my fucking mind lol

  • Mathematicians just use calculators

  • I've always done math this way. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one.

  • .. I think he just made this video to show off.

  • I used to try my math teachers way then i made my own way and lost over half the marks cause it was not their way..... guess people don't like people not conforming

  • I've always done this but I never have considered myself good at math

  • Damn. Im asian and I dunno what's going on @.@

  • Funny, I have just learned more about math in the 3 minutes and 33 seconds of this video then I have in my entire 11 years of siting in front of a desk listening to a teacher who will not listen When I tell her I know what 2+2 means.

  • yeah... i think im sticking to calculators :D

  • @jakedrumfellow No problem. :)

  • math is great

    if you're an economic robot

  • Spam click 0:00; it looks like he is chewing gum.

  • @OldShoolPoet that genuinely made me happy. you're an outstanding human being.

  • I used to do math like that, but then I took an arrow in the knee.

  • I don't know about the rest of you... but in the Netherlands they teach this in lower school..

  • to square large numbers, i just use the equation (N-A)x(N+A)+a^2= N^2

    so 28^2 is like 30x26 (A=2) which is 780 (2x26=78) + B^2(4)= 784

    so 24^2

    20x28 + 4^2 = 560 + 16= 576

    easy

  • Nowadays they have some pretty sexy nerd chicks.

  • Hmmmmm. Hmmmm. HMMMMMM. HMMMMMMM!! Sorry, us nerds don't get it. :D

  • i do it like this i think...

the way i do it is like, for example, 6 + 6 = 12, and i would have found that out by taking the 1 of the 2 6's to make it two 5's, add the two 5's then when i get 10, add the two 2's. if that makes sence

  • I already did math like this! :D

  • where did you guys go to college? smh

  • I understood everything you said!

  • 'Scuse me while I go pick up the pieces of my asploded head. @_@

  • 25 x 160 : I'd 160 x 100 / 4

  • great, got it!!!!thanx!!!

  • I like this shortcut for 25x___

    when u multiply 15x15, 25x25, 35x35 etc …

    Add 1 to the first number-example: 35

35 has '3' as the first number. (So, 3+1=4) Then multiply the first number by the newly added number: (3x4- in this example=12). Then put 25 after that... (1225- is the answer).

    45x45= 5x4=20 ... therefore A= 2025

    55x55= 3025

    85x 85 = 7225 etc... Love it! ...hope u do too!

  • intelligence is marked not by the ability to make simple things difficult, but by making difficult things simple. unfortunately, i believe you are the former.

  • @kman7271 Or the fact that you don't really understand neither the difficult nor the simple :) .. seriously though, these are for people who like to play with number

  • XD Am I the only one who laughed at "falling off a logarithm"? Yeah? Okay.

  • I just show my work "properly" but I do the math in my head like this.

  • i often use the Difference of two squares when i do multiplikation a^2-b^2 =(a-b)(a+b)

    so for example 34*26=(30-4)(30+4)=30^2-4^2=900-16=884

this is only pratical when its easy to work out what the averege squared is.

  • If you listen to it like 3 times it starts to make sense :P

  • I'm that friend

  • You make me feel so inferiour, your too smart for this world

  • I do it that way too.

  • Where was this when I was doing my Maths exam -_- I'll take my D and leave ¬¬

  • I'm top if my class at school (well the school I just left) and once at that school me and the rest of the top group once all got utterly confused by what the teacher said, did it all a simpler way and got it all right while those who did it the teachers way got it wrong.

I'm comparing her way to yours...um.............. ........I already new the beginning but you got more complicated than HER for the rest of it!!!

  • show-off!

  • Comment removed

  • i do this in my head :3 and get it right :D but get an F for not showing work -_____-

  • this is still not as confusing as "Women"

  • ...People didn't know this?

    Holy fuck.

  • Started taking: 4902749463485 by 40273593 by8907605240824 blah blah blah blah blah blahblah blah blah blah blah blahblah blah blah blah blah blahblah blah blah blah blah blahblah blah blah blah blah blahblah blah blah blah blah blahblah blah blah blah blah blahblah blah blah blah blah blahblah blah blah blah blah blahblah blah blah blah blah blahblah blah blah blah blah blahblah blah blah blah blah blahblah blah blah blah blah blahblah blah blah blah blah blahblah blah blah blah blah blag blah

  • the best!!!

  • D: what?

  • omg u confused me

  • headache :(

  • so what was the mistake? and what was the prize? lol

  • I'm so in love!

  • i really wish i understood this........

  • Or 112x118=13216 (Leave the 1 then 12+18=30 12x18=216 13216)

146x123=17958 (Leave the 1 47+23=69 23x46=1058 "25x46=1150-92=1058" now just count it up and put the 1 in the begin 17958) This works well with numbers from 100-145 ^^.

Go to this guys channel he teaches many of these tricks :D =* /user/glad2teach * =

  • The way I multiply numbers:

    13*19=(10+3)(10+9)=100+90+30+27=190+57=247

Not as efficient as his method but it works for all numbers, not just those close to an easy number to multiply.

  • My teacher marks off if we don't show our work, so i write random numbers all sloppy so she can't read them then I write down my answer neatly and circle it. Works 85% of the time.

  • @narly0carly

Its nice when you get into higher maths, especially in college, because profs don't care if you show work. They just can't give partial credit (if you are lucky enough to have a prof that gives partial credit) if you don't show any work.

  • @narly0carly When i was a kid i could do that kinda math easy in my head,in fact my sister(who is 5 years older than me)would bring home her algebra homework, and i would help her with it and she got a+ on her homework, but then then i got into a school that would give me an F in i did not show my work, and now because of that(and some family problems at the same time)i can no longer do quick math in my head,i now have to sit and think about it,or even stop and right it down.............i hate it.

  • NERD POWER!

  • Your way is more difficult than the normal way. Especially when you start to compare rectangles.

  • Only got stumped because he asked for the difference between (8 x 29) and (15 x 19) and proceeded to give the difference between (7 x 29) and (15 x 19). No wonder I couldn't figure out what I was missing for a moment.

  • i got lost 2 seconds into the video :'(

  • 3:29

  • are you seth meyers' son??

  • ya lost me at "You".

  • This is what we at our school. Singapore math.

  • Ya lost me allready at "speed math"

  • i found it

  • Okay i have dyscalculia(undiagnosed) and holy cow all i could do is laugh cause i have no idea what hes talking about.

  • ok man

  • ...I got one thing out of this entire video... NERD POWER!

  • @02jillyjack20 Same. (:

  • ...I zoned out at 2 minutes...I understood some of it...

  • aaaaaaaaaah! my brain exploded! haha. I've always hated math. lol. I can do applied math. and when I say applied math I mean I have a legitimate problem at the moment that can only be solved by math. in order for my brain to even process it it has to be MY problem and it has to be worth solving, in which case no problem is too hard. mostly because I've never come across any really complicated problems. lol.

  • i've always loved being at a drunken party and telling people i'm great with math, they say bullshit and i tell 'em get your cellphone, go to calculator and give me 2 numbers, any numbers, and i will multiply pretty damn close instantly, they usually choose something simple a couple 2 digit numbers, spit out the exact number and they shit

  • Like If Your Glad Someone Created The Calculator

  • @lorena33614 I LIKE :)

  • @lorena33614

Dislike If You Hate People Who Say "Your" Instead Of "You're" And Capitalize Every First Letter Of Every Word For Some Reason... And Ask For Likes.

  • While I was watching the video and seeing him use "Nerd Power!" more than 2 times I thought to myself there was gonna be a comment with a lot of votes about it. I scrolled down. I wrote this comment.

  • Boring arithmetic. Simple rules too.

  • This is NOT Maths!! This iiissss.... NUMERACY people!!

Maths on the other hand has fractals, spirals, 'beautiful' formulas, genius proofs, abstract concepts like 8-dimensional space, statistics for winning at gambling [and for other reasons...mayb]; it is part of EVERY academic field and a lot of everyday life.

Granted numeracy is a branch of Maths but it is a tiiny drop in a vast sea!

It is the education system being soo SHIT that makes ppl thnk it's merely numeracy and hence 'geeky'!

  • @Duncdagger Well said!

  • @Duncdagger I'm confused... You said the education system makes math look like just numeracy, and therefore geeky to the students so they dislike it? I would say the fact that high school students have to take algebra, geometry, and precalculus would make them hate math! hahahaha I however came out of that loving it... so different strokes, I suppose...

  • He put the numbers wrong on the complicated one and it was 82 bigger than 7x29 rather than 53 bigger than 8x29. Watch and listen to the video and you'll get it. THAT IS THE MISTAKE!!!!!!!!!!! NERD POWER YEAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • He put the numbers wrong on the complicated one and it was 82 bigger than 7x29 rather than 53 bigger than 8x29. Watch and listen to the video and you'll get it. THAT IS THE MISTAKE!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i'll go with a calculator insteaad

  • I think I hate you for knowing all this!

  • "Because everyone needs a friend like that... I'm your friend." haha

  • I liked they logarithm joke :)

  • Hot. Rewind.

  • FINALLY!!! someone who thinks like meh!!

  • Lmao. For the 25 x 160 problem, why not just round off the 25 to 30 and then multiply 160 times 30. Which is the same as 160 times 10 times 3.

  • Lol this is the way I do math, cause I have forgotten everything after school. Should I be proud or ashamed?

  • I understood all of this.. That makes me proud. :)

  • You know when you do something just because, then it's explained to you, and you're lost, re-watch the video over and over, realize it's what you've been doing the whole time, just explained and elaborated? Yeah, that's what happened.

  • And in the spirit of Tom Lahrer, could you do it in Base 8?

  • It's very nice that you in the end gave us that 15x29 is 82 more than 7x29, but you actually asked for the difference between 15x19 and 8x29 wich is 53.....

  • @NCvicsfriend so could that be the mistake he was talking about?

  • Honestly, you make it look like autistic people are doing it the easy way.

  • Comment removed

  • I wouldn't call this nerdy at all.

I also wouldn't count on this for any of my maths exams.

    Just being able to + - * & / fast doesn't mean you're good at maths.

It might be helpful for basic Arithmetics.

But its completely useless for Real Analysis, Complex Analysis, Rings & Fields, Galois Theory, Point Set Topology etc..

  • I'm just going to use a calculator, thanks though.

  • Ya know I ABSOLUTELY SUCK at Math. But strangly enough I actually understand this. Not that this is really a problem for me. I can do most of it any way. My problem is I cant do math in my head. And when we get to fraction.... HO HO HO!!!! Its like a 6th language for me. I can do some Algebra but once you put some fractions in the mix thats where I draw a blank. I can no longer solve the problem.

  • i'm that friend too.. NERD POWER!!

  • I'll just use the calculator on my iPhone... Apple Power!!

  • Thats how I've always multiplied! :D

  • id rather be nerdy and smart than cool and dumbass thumbs up if u agree

  • surely that's why calculators were invented.

Anyone worked out what the mistake was?

  • 2:19... you lost me... yes I have no idea what you're talking about.

    12 * 17 = 12 * 16 + 12 = 11 * 17 + 11

Why is one bigger again? I cast my vote on the mistake.

  • i always thought i was such a strong math student....?

  • Ok I'm going into my Physics exam now !!!

  • yay! i followed! only i'd need pencil an paper to try to do it by myself.

  • You just fried my brain...

  • Ow.

  • Id rather use the calculator on the Iphone...

  • i followed up until that last one...

  • 0:50 does anyone else think he sounds like Brian Drummond when he says "NERD POWER!"?

  • I followed all that and didn't get lost! I guess that's what happens when you have a parent that shoves mental math down your throat :o)

  • Nah, I think I'll stick to Standard Algorithms.

  • it the math daniel tosh

  • Wow! I thought I was the only one who did math like that! Now I feel better. :)

  • tha way I do math is me + candy= happy so NERD POWER!!!!

  • Can you do my math homework? xD

  • hey u doing the math u r confusing me soooo much

  • Having participated in Arithmetic World Cup 2010 makes me an Uber Nerd. I beat everyone of you watching this comment except if you are Alberto Coto or Rudigger Gamm.

  • Huh?

  • I paused the video several times and now I get this.

  • I wish my hs math teacher had said as long as you get the right answer it doesnt matter how u do it...my algebra 2 and geometry teacher would mark me half off if i didnt put EVERY step down...including 2 plus 2...shes the reason i hate math...

  • @Sharpshot7218 I was going to type the same thing and saw your comment wen I scrolled down to type it :P

  • @The2x4 Its sad when teachers are the reason you end up hating a subject. I only ever had one good math teacher and i learned while in his class...i actually didnt hate math for one year...

  • @Sharpshot7218

I had such a math rookie too. And i deliberately solved everything in an alternative way!

Her husband was a math professor, so whenever she was asked outside of current book material,

she replied: "write it down, i'll bring an answer tomorrow..."

It sux to be smarter than your teacher.

  • @Sharpshot7218 tell your teacher to fuck off then. math isn't about what score you get on a test by your teacher. if you enjoy math, do it. if you don't enjoy math, don't do it. don't make an excuse to your family and friends about your poor ability to do math because you had a stupid teacher

  • @Sharpshot7218 Actually, your solution does matter. But as long as your solution is logical, and you still get to the right answer, it really shouldn't matter how u got there. All math problems have more than one way of solving it. And math teachers shouldn't obsess too much on the "textbook" way of solving a particular problem; what they should focus on is the logic behind the problem solving procedure so that students may be able create their own procedure using concepts that they've learned.

  • @psywar1976 I get what you are saying. It just sucks that for one math problem you had to use half a sheet of paper because god forbid you do it your own way and not text book, then the teacher doesnt understand and they freak out and mark you half off because you didnt write down simple addition in your problem and they dont understand how you skipped that step because they cant do simple addition. I hate math forever now.

  • There are actually a few mistakes at the very end. These mistakes are seen most easily at 3:17.

First: the original problem was comparing 15*19 and 8*29 and his answer compares 7*29.

    Second: 15*19 is not 232-150. 232 came from 8*29 and 150 came from 15*10 so he's just missing the 7*29. It should have said 15*19 = 232 + 203 - 150.

Third: This refers back to number one. While 15*19 is 82 more than 7*29 the orignial problem was 8*29 and 15 *19 (285) is only 53 more than 8*29 (232).

  • I feel like I'm watching an infomercial for math..

  • you're too smart

  • lol, that was amazing.

my teacher would tell me similar things.

"as long as it's right, i don't care how you got it"

  • Or use a calculator... they even have them in cell phones now... :P

  • :)

  • You're that kid in class I would hiss at and tell to shush.

  • you're a really cute nerd..

  • this is skill is you either you have it or dont or learn it early on

this is grammar is you either you have it or dont

  • :3 awesome I've tried teaching some friends to do math this way it's just too bad I'm bad teacher :x.

  • Useful video, although the speed of delivery was needlessly fast. Too many people are already intimidated by math, and math is . . . beautiful and deep. The more people who can join in, the merrier. Math: It's all really done with prime numbers.

  • Oh no, believe me I get more chicks for being smart. Girls like smart people, if they are smart of course

  • Huh?

  • Not bad. Actually, first metod (20 x 19 = 20 x 20 - 20) isn't bad at all :].

  • My eye is twitching...

  • (Whispers creepily):"I'm your friend"

  • Um, isnt 65 x 10 = 650, not 520?

  • @sly71589 nah he said 65 x 8 is 520 AKA 65 x 10 - 130

  • @sly71589 No. 65 x 10 - 65 x 2= 520. You forgot subracting 65 x 2
