@dodgedart74 Hi, I got a master's degree in electrical engineering, however to be honest I mostly learned math at college and some labs, but the major learning was playing around at home AFTER work and just spending a few hours every night.
Alot of it is replicating how the chips were used in original hardware.
The AY38912 chip, from someone else's comment, was used in the ZX Spectrum, a very simple home computer.
By researching the actual wiring of old computers, how to program the chips directly, which is PEEK and POKE commands, aka, issuing numbers 8 bits at a time, you tell this chip to play a note at this pitch, for this long, using these other control parameters, all fed into the chip.
And let's not forget the ZX Spectrum.... A lot has been done to take the AY to the limit. Examples are tunes by the AY-riders, digital (sampled) music by Yermzyey and many demos on YouTube that show what the AY can do.
keep it up man, can i ask you what kind of classes youve taken to learn these chips so well?
