As a child, Bill Viola almost drowned, and when he was almost dead, he felt a sense of being released and of freedom and warmth.

In most of his artworks, water is a symbol of the bortal between life and death. The religious box thingy represents that the relationship between life and death is sacred.

if it helps, lots of Viola's work is influenced by Christian devotional painting (i.e. of Christ, the Madonna etc). This is one of many examples.
