The country/continent/Turtle Island was not owned by Spain and France, it was owned by the original inhabitants - why is it we talk about "discovery" and "exploring" as if it is some major feat? The truth is it was stolen and the invaders would of died if not for the generousity of the original inhabitants (all over the world). We need, in these modern days, to stop pretending places were discovered and give tribute to the true owners and explorers.
