There actually are stop lights, but no one pays any attention to them. The soldier/traffic cop that is standing there in the intersection directs people.
@GodReignsInMe Pedestrian crossing don't work, no-one know what the lines on the road mean, not even the police, I have been driving in Cairo for 12 years now and when I first got here I stopped at a pedestrian crossing, almost caused one huge pile up and copped an ear full of abuse.
I don`t know how they make it work but they do! You just couldn`t control the huge amount of traffic with lights and rules lol! You could watch it for hours and there are not as many accidents as you would think! Was fascinated by "the Egyptian way" when I was there and actually felt pretty safe on the road - you do need to be awake though!
Yeah! That's it! Brings back great memories! I lived there 15 years! Depending on how one takes it, it can either be fun or hell to be inside this traffic! A time lapse of this traffic footage could be cool :)
Even though this way of driving seems insane to me and my American driving sensibilities, I LOVE Cairo! And I love it that Egyptian people make this craziness work. Cairo is of my favorite places in the world....
Basicly the concept of asian intersections is just a place where you try to weeve your way through. Even in the capital city of my province ( Edmonton ) it is not this bad.
wemasoud- actually its more like an eighth the size of Cairo, from what I understand the city of Edmonton is about 752,000- its urban area 1,090,000. Cairo proper is well over 8,000,000 the metro area about 17,000,000. Not meaning to be fussy, just an observation* I agree btw
take the subway, it is the fastest and takes you all over. just check to see where you are needing to go a make sure it goes there. one LE per ticket so it is cheaper than the taxi.
It's because they aren't white

Pedestrian Rule #1: the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. These guys understand that one!

Err.. Edmonton has less than a quarter of the residents in Cairo. Bad comparison.

Been there, done that. The first time I went to Cairo, I had to lay down and hide my eyes in the backseat of a taxi because I was so terrified.
