When that failed russia supplied the rebels in south ossetia and in abkhazia with arms and protection in hopes they could do what russia failed to do-provoke Georgia to attack.

All the rest at the moment is complete mystery. There are no good trusted information sources. I wouldn't trust neither Russians nor Georgians as they have their interests. No foreign reporters are there.
Now, further on situation. Russia states that that there are hundreds of causalities caused by Georgian aggression including peacekeepers and that they have to bring in reinforcements and perform some preventive strikes to stop massacre.
In turn Georgians states they never attacked peacekeepers, there's no civic casualities and if any they are caused by Russian aggression and that Russia invades Georgia.

Now guys sit down and relax. It's quite clear that Georgia attacked Ossetia first. They don't even deny it. It's also clear that Russia had peacekeepers stationed in the region legally. It's also quite obvious that peacekeepers are there to stop the bloodshed and that's what they tried to do.
All the rest at the moment is complete mystery. There are no good trusted information sources. I wouldn't trust neither Russians nor Georgians as they have their interests. No foreign reporters are there.

Neither side has good proof.

In the meanwhile, President of Georgia wines and weeps and turns to USA with requests for intervention. Bush ignores, that is also quite understandable, I don't think he's keen to go into direct combat with Russians, especially when elections are coming soon.

UN also closes its eyes on the situation. They held two meetings and decided nothing. On the first one, yesterday, Russia demanded both Ossetians and Georgians to cease the fire, but the paper didn't pass through. Today Georgia asked UN to state Russians are aggressors, it didn't went through either.
So now you see, situation is extremely blurry. We know nothing. UN and US decline to interact. We are in the middle of information war.

Georgians attacked ther breakaway region South Ossetia, where, according to the international treaty, Russian peacekeepers were stationed. After 24 hours of heavy fight, additional Russian forces came to stop massacre of Ossetians.
