I have seen this only weeks after you placed it here - I was awed!
And the sheer memory of you spinning at this beautifvull wheel kept me going once I tryed to discover the longdraw way of spinning. I have practised a lot - frequently viviting here to see it again: resulting in me being able to spin almost like you do here. Lovely music....
I am gratefull you uploaded this nice video and that you were willing to share something very special. Thank you!

Amazing video that has sold me on Great Wheeels. I am picking up 2 today in some disrepair, from owners who don't know what they are. But I am inspired to restore them and learn. THANKS!!!
Really beautiful movements. Spinning is the most relaxing job I ever known and this video is really "word come to flesh". Excuse me, if this is not the right phrase for it, but I think you know what I mean.
I have been practising spinning with walking wheel for couple of years, but still this video catches by breath. I hope that some day I will get my skills and the flow to this point as shown in this video.

my husband just bought me a wheel similar to the one shown here--- but I don't have the part where the spool is. I have spun on an Ashford with a treadle-- so this is an adjustment for me. But it is a beautiful wheel. I just need someone to help me through it alittle.
I received a Great Wheel for my bday years ago before I had any interest in spinning. I've now caught the spinning bug though and am researching like crazy. The 1st thing I thought of was my wheel. I had no idea what kind it was or if it is even complete and I'm not sure what you are to use for the drive band?
I'd like to learn more about my wheel & would appreciate if you could point me in the right direction.
Thank you so much for sharing your time and talents with us!!
I would point you in the direction of a local spinning or weaving guild in your area, if you have one...I will PM you with more information to get you started.
Very nice, good angle and distance of the camera, it's easy to see what's happening, unlike a lot of other spinning videos. Beautiful! I also like the music selection, it really does make it seem like some sort of serene dance.
I wonder though, that your wheel diameter must be huge, all the other great wheel videos I've watched, they seem to be spinning faster than you. But seeing your singles up close makes me wonder if they're reaaally overtwisting. Thank you for sharing!
My Great Wheel has an acceleration head, and as a result, I don't have to spin the wheel as fast or as much as a Great Wheels with a direct drive. The singles do not suffer from overtwist, as one stays far behind the draft, as well as the point of twist....hope this helps you to understand the process!
Thanks Cyndy. I had thought it may have been Grada, but wasn't sure the title, I,ll get it ordered up. Lovely intresting web site you have, I enyoy reading through your writing's and thought's, You have a really nice way of expressing yourself. Best Wishes, Ray
Thank you for sharing this, I am transfixed and hypnotised, watching it over and over. I have been a hand spinner for more than a decade and it is wonderful to see someone spinning so beautifully on a Great Wheel. I have several wheels and spindles, but watching this has consolidated my wish to make myself a Great Wheel! (I am also a fine cabinet maker so don't feel daunted by the project). Once again, thank you.
the CD playing in the background is by a group called grada, from Dublin Ireland, i saw them when they were in the states and purchased the CD "endeavour"--track title "biodegradable"
Beatiful to watch. I'd love to see it demonstrated one day. I spin on an Ashford Joy and Kiwi. My interest in history makes your wheel positively captivating!
VERY WELL DONE!! Love it ALL! I'm a Spinner too & have a BABE Liten Charka spindle spinning wheel to DO this very sort of spinning vs. Flyer & Bobbin spinning I do on the OTHER 10 different wheels here! Lovely work & MUSIC! P.S. - WHO are the musicians I hear in your background? Thanx - Teri
I just got my own great wheel & was trying to get the hang of it...it only needed new leather bearings and some old. I think I get it now.
Mine does not have the accelerated head, has the bearings but not the pulley/shaft. I'll check the link you listed below. I'm a drop spinner in a house full of wheel spinners, now I have the biggest and smallest wheels.
Have you tried Angora on your wheel? ... that's the wool we have "plenty of". We have Giant, French and Satin Angora Rabbits.
Thanks for posting this. Nice job of the lighting too, made it real easy to see. This is the first time I've seen a great wheel in action. Very beautiful. I'm a spinner too and a weaver and knitter.
The spinning head is called an accelerating head, or Miners Head. Mine was broken and was restored by Fred Hatton. He sometimes sells completely restored heads on etsy. finnsheep.etsy.

The piece of music is called "biodegradable" from Grada CD "Endeavour"
The group has given me permission to use their music in my videos. Search Youtube for more of their songs...they are very good :-)

Great to see how it's done, Thanks
Dose anyone know what the piece of music in the background is?

flmason said: I can't quite figure out how she spins the fiber at one point and then causes it to spool, then goes back to spinning so smoothly?
She changes the angle of the thread.

The Great Wheel can spin very fast, some are equipped with an acceleration head.
Also, some of us like to spin for historical demonstrations.
Besides, they make lovely woolen yarn.
