  • Should I put the stain on before the Z-Poxy or after? I hear people put it on after the grain is filled, but I don't see how wood stain is going to stain through the Z-Poxy.

  • @shelbyfanss well, I think that depends on the method you were planning on using. This guitar was z-poxy'ed, then bursted (trans tint mixed in DBC500 clear basecoat), then cleared. You're correct that stain is not going to penetrate the z-poxy.

  • @jsullysix Well my plan was to take an unfinished les paul with a flame maple top, stain it black and then sand it back down to accentuate the grain pattern, then dye it red to get that 68' Les Paul Custom "Tiger Stripe" look. But to get the high gloss finish, I'm wondering what my best options are, if Z-Poxy is the way to go, or if I want a different kind of sealer/grain filler.

  • @shelbyfanss No need to grain fill (zpoxy) maple. Put the zpoxy on the mahogany only, leaving the maple top alone. Remember that the purpose of grain filling is simply to fill the open pores of wood so that you can eventually have a flat finish. Maple has very tight grain and no grain filling is necessary. So good times! (Drink!)

  • @jsullysix Thanks Sully!

  • I greatly enjoy your videos, Sully. I've picked up some skills from you. Thanks for that. Highly entertaining, too. Will you scrape my bindings if I send coffee ?

  • @DAVIDCGRIMES Well I was going to say that you gotta buy me drinks before I'll scrape your binding, but it appears that you've got that covered already!

  • Hey Sully, thank you for getting me on to Z-Poxy!

But are there different kinds of that Z-Poxy? The Bottles I have look the same as yours, but it doesn't have this amber tint that your stuff has, it's just clear.

(and it smells bad S***T ugly)

  • @DJ1812 it's the PT-40 Finishing Resin.

  • Great channel...! BIG THX...!

  • Love the channel, how did you apply the z-poxy to the neck? did you use a scraper still? Also how important are the rubber gloves, I have bare body and neck, z-poxy and no gloves (I will get them in a few days). Keep up the good work!

  • @MrMaxQuack think I used my middle finger for the back of the neck. Gloves are a MUST! :)

  • @jsullysix Thanks a lot, your videos and replys to all comments have a value I couldn't put a price tag on!

  • @MrMaxQuack You kidding? You watched the video, the least I can do is answer questions that arise from said video. :)

  • @jsullysix You seem like a great guy, its a shame so many questions get unanswered elsewere,

  • @MrMaxQuack Thanks man, nice of you to say.

  • Hey, great channel. Just one question, is this z-poxy good for giving a natural finish? I've just ordered a strat kit that I'm starting work on, got a lot of new things to learn!

  • @MrMaxQuack You could use it as a finish, yes. As you can see in the video, it gives the wood a warm tint, which looks nice, imo.

  • @jsullysix thanks

  • @BurnFukingBaby

You are such a fuckin troll. Get off of the internet and quit spreading the bullshit you do.

  • @Church8826 Sully is the man. That guy who couldn't get the heat gun to work so he broke out the blowtorch...lol That's just moronic. (spelled correctly too) You rock Sully!

  • did you sand the guitar in between grain filler coats? if so what grit did you sand with? something rougher or 400 after every coat including the final one?

  • @lorenznijs Yes, put a coat of the z-poxy on, sand it flat the next day (320 or 400), then add another coat.

  • Good video! How many coats did you end up doing? Did you pour on the last coat or use the squeegee the whole time?

  • @broadcast666this Probably about 3 coats, and squeegee always. :)

  • this should be a tv show on like discovery or history

  • @88segovia That'd be super awesome. Know anyone that works for those networks? :)

  • sully is a guitar idol to me

  • @jsullysix yes that's what I'm seeing haha. Not necessarily a resemblance in headstocks it just reminded me of the iceman. Thanks for the tip. Expect more questions down the road. Thanks sully:)

  • i didnt know Paul Rudd grew his hair and started making guitars...?

  • @kilvo000 Hey, me neither! :)

  • @jsullysix haha. excellent videos mate. thanks for all the tips

  • @kilvo000 thanks for sitting through my rambling!

  • I agree! When I saw ur headstock it reminded me of the ibanez headstock on an iceman. Also I'm repainting my epiphone les paul. Just got my stuff from reranch today. It will be solid white. I do have a question though. When I sanded it down I got to the raw wood and it looks like I've hit sealer on it. Should I just sand that lightly and give a few coats of sand and sealer? First time refinish so I need all the help I can get. Thanks for your time. Id love to send you pics if at all possible.

  • @cboogie117 Definitely not seeing any resemblance to an Ibanez headstock, although I guess that I could see the hook in my headstock reflecting the hook in the treble side cutaway. You should be able to build that area back up, but definitely make sure it's all level before moving forward.

  • Hey sully if you wouldn't mind considering a request I would like to see you design an iceman styled guitar. Your work is awesome and id like to see the making of an iceman. Just food for thought. Rock on man!

  • @cboogie117 thanks man! I like the Iceman a lot and had a really cool one in the 90s. Not sure if I'll be building one in the future, although it'd be cool, and I think that my headstock design would work well with it. So who knows? :)

  • dude ..you gotta get some sleep!..you're rocking the eyebags at 3.22..so glad someone else is feeling the pinch! ha ha ha!..I'm nearly tripping over my own :)

  • @jaytv777 yeah, it sucks getting older!

  • Press "1" for endless entertainment!

  • I can't really speak about old Kramers, as I've never really sought them out. If you're suggesting level sanding, yet leaving some of the original finish as your base, and painting over that, you'll be fine. Thick finish, but it's fine.

  • @timothystine It's probably easiest to repaint it instead of doing touchups. You can use the duplicolor stuff. For everything else, I highly recommend reading "reranch 101" on the Reranch site. Even if you're not using their stuff, it's great info. Google Reranch and you'll find it.

  • How many times have you been sanding your sealer coat to find you've got a long black hair in it ? ?

You've got some great video's up mate and a very nice set up i hope to get a few bit's together soon so i can start to finish a guitar of mine that i've had for a while.

Keep the video's coming, even the long and tedious work is so interesting to me :D cheers !!!!

  • @kingdarko surprisingly, never! :)

  • @jsullysix man how do you afford all of these guitars and parts?

  • @FireboltAce Many of the things you see in videos are customer orders, which means deposits cover the cost. As far as parts go, I'm an Allparts and WD reseller, so I get parts wholesale.

  • Beer in the fridge, Sully?

That's ok I will go help myself....... no really, I insist...... want one?

  • @billyb440 Yep!

  • you should endorse for 3M

  • @slash11896 Happy to!

  • Good stuff!

  • Chemical strippers are far kinder to your wood though. Fnar!

  • @Prostheta in comparison to what?

  • @jsullysix In comparison to heat stripping.

  • @Prostheta Oh. I can't imagine I'd use that. Did I mention strippers at all in this? It's been a long weekend. :)

  • @jsullysix It's never possible to mention strippers enough. Unless they come into contact with binding or inlays. Nowait. That's not it. Bear with me whilst I look up "strippers" on Wikipedia.

Oh WOW. That's new. Cool. Need some of those to do my refinishes.

  • @Prostheta ohhhhh, were you responding to my "it's not all pyro and strippers" comment? If so, I was referring to the lady type. :)

  • @jsullysix Indeed. Perhaps I was doing the wrong work on people's guitars when I was asked to strip. Maybe I'm in the wrong business.

  • ALRIGHT MORE GRAIN FILLIN!!

  • @MrJDinop I think you're more excited about it than I am! :)

  • Wow, That guitar looks fantastic. And i don't even like thunderbird guitars so much, but it looks very cool with the reverse headstock.

    Cheers from Sweden :)

  • have you ever done a scalloped fret board ?

  • @MrHellcatos Nope.

  • so im guessing nothing on the cloth right? you're just getting rid of dust.

  • @JYZProductions Correct!

  • which grit sand paper did you use in this video and im guessing nothing on the cloth, you're just getting rid of the dust.

  • @JYZProductions The cloth could be a "tack rag" which is cloth impregnated with a ever-so-slightly sticky stuff which pulls the dust and keeps it from transferring back to the workpiece.

  • @JYZProductions 400 grit

  • what kind of wood is that strat-shaped guitar that appears at 3:50? it looks nice

  • @greensp4rk Swamp ash. It's got dark grain filler in it.

  • no wet sanding?

  • @davey4557 Not at this time.

  • LMAO, still smells like a hope chest.

  • @paintballkiller54 True story!

  • That looks like fun. I got bored just watching it.

  • @playingwithshotguns yeah, it's not all pyro and strippers. Sometimes you just gotta sand stuff.

  • @jsullysix

LOLOLOL - Now that's fucking funny.

  • 1st!!!!!!!!!! ,sully comment back!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @kissfreak1998 this is a useless comment. I did it for him.
