I'll always love this song, growing up in South Central Los Angeles this song was featured in the movie"Boyz N the Hood"and must've watched a million times,it reminds me that no matter how rough the hood is it will always be alright if you believe in yourself and smile!R.I.P Don!!!You will be missed, also went to school with his nephew named Bachegue Cornilius(FORREAL)my heart goes out to his family and loved ones!Peace, love and one heart!
WOW EVERYONE THANKS, FOR SOME GOOD SUPPORT words for some people on here who are opening up their lives, their tough devils and monkees on their shoulders, it is good we DO have compassion for our fellow man and it shows here that there is support and good and wonderful words to encourage those and keep them keepin on and being strong. RIGHT ON TO ALL WHO gave those words of support to them who bare their souls here. RIGHT ON!!!
Such a great inspirational song from a time that sadly seems very long past. Music today unfortunately does not seem to capture the heart, imagination and soul as the great songs of yesterday's music and bands. I yearn for this type of music to be resurrected and enjoyed by today's audiences. I feel disappointed for today's youth who unfortunately don't get to hear the great music from this era. Tragically, they are bombarded with the shells, slogans and profanity of today's worthless noise.
Scumdog13, I was also on methadone 15 yrs. I kicked it COLD. I chose life, because, for me, me, I was the walking dead.. Methadone turned me into shooting coke, eating Valium daily, and drinking alcohol, and almost shooting my good friends son accidentally while high. For me, it was an all or nothing deal. I chose to be clean at any expense. The only thing that I remembered at a Methadone clinic while standing in line with other junkies was"my dose ain't holding me". Now God does. Good luck,Bro
I was a you white dude when this song came out. Strung out on heroin and running with a black crowd in Boston(of course, back then they had the best stuff). No one ever stopped me to tell me that my life was going down the tubes. My g/f and I didn't see eye to eye anymore and I just got busted. No one ever talked to me except this song. The song told me that "things were gonna get better". Those lyrics were like a prayer to me. A constant mantra in my head. I am clean today for 26 yrs. Thanks Guys
@Pimpdog1274 It wasn't until the late 90's that I decided to stroll down opiate lane.I had sone smack before but all through my 20's I battled hardcore alcohol addiction. Then I messed my leg up and got a taste of Oxycontin then moved up to morphine.15 years later I'm still on the Methadone Clinic @ 90 mgs.If it wasn't for music in general,I play in Bands and record my own acoustic stuff, but music,Mine and others from all genre's has kept me from going on that final Nod.
@62946magic That is a wonderful story-thank you so much for sharing...here I am feeling sorry for myself because Im unemployed and you were fighting for yout life... Thank you again for showing what is really important :)

I love sites like this they really bring back great memories. When I listen to these classics I get goose bumps.Memories light the corners of my mind....Lol.
Always loved this song. It takes me back to college days. So absolutely positive and uplifting. I never knew the lead-off vocal was female...and what a lovely female she is! Great group and fantastic song.
Man I think about you guys all the time. My big brother use to hang out with, Well you know who, And my older sis used to baby sit for lenny and Martin. Your Dad. Mr. Burk was such a wise man. When I see this, it brinks back so many memories. If you read this, it might bring back memories. Yall lived at 300, we lived at 309, and the Benniditos lived directly across the street from you. But any way thanks for bringing joy to my hart with this song again. I will always love your family.
iM 56 ,I first heard this song at my first what they called get together sock hops at the time. I had just begun the 7th grade and it was the first time I had ever danced with a girl.I have never forgotten that nite or the song first heard at my first dance.
This song should definately be brought back to the radio! The world needs to know we can heal! Have faith in God (or your higher power) that the world can't get much worse than it is now & if it does, he will deliver us to eternal life.
The only positive song I've heard lately is Stereo by Gym Class Heros. I don't listen to rap but sometimes it's hard to get away from the kids music! At least Stereo is all +
You seem to know a lot about music and artists.. I have a question for you when I was younger I heard a song on the radio called "The Ghetto" and it was sung by a woman, mind you this was the early to mid 70's( I am now 48) ...Again the singer was not Elvis! and not by any other man. I am obsessed with finding this song or the video...Help me if you can... I would pass out from happiness...Thank You
@seanviv2 ok I am surprised Only female I see thru research was "Dolly Parton" in 1969. but I like the one from Donny Hathaway, it was great song, great words, and a little Latin mixed in, so true of what I felt growing up in the projects.
@seanviv2, You just taught me something. I'll call SAG on Monday, and maybe I can put your mind to rest. If they don't have the answer, I'll call The Musicians Union. If it's out there, I'll find it...
@commonman80 Isn't fate a strange thing? I heard that at the beginning they were competing with the Jackson 5. But they signed with a regional label whereas the J5 signed with Motown, who had major distribution clout, and the rest is history. Their sister was a knockout.
@hork111, I don't know all about that.. I was a kid. Hell, we all were kids. That was a Grown up Thing.. It was the 70's. We all did what we were told by our parents. They never talked money with us.. However, I'm sure Mr. Burk handled THEIR Business. He was so smart..
@seanviv2 The song was In The Ghetto and came out in 1972. The song reached number 48 on the top 100 that year. Candi Staton was known as the first lady of southern soul.
@hork111 You bet bet? LOL! Anyway, I'm sure she did and from time to time they probably were a pain in the ass but trust me, if there's a guy she liked they couldn't stand in way. Yeah, she was back then. I'm not sure what she looks like today but back then, damn, she was fine! and that voice, very sexy....
@hork111 Corrected version: I'm sure she did feel protected at times and from time to time they probably were a pain in the ass but trust me, if there's a guy she liked they couldn't stand in her way. Yeah, she was fine back then. I'm not sure what she looks like today but back then, damn, she was fine! and that voice, very sexy....
One of the defining songs of the early '70's and so hauntingly beautiful! God these kids were cute! Great memories of my college years this song brings back!
I first heard this song when I was a young child traveling down route 35 in New Jersey with my parents. This was around the time of the Asbury Park riots in 1970.
This is such an awesome song that I have loved since I first heard it as a young child! I never get tired of this positive, upbeat song! Peace and Love and Joy to everyone, BobbyK
Omg is that a feather sticking out of his hat! Sharp as a tack..Awesome cuteness.. We were ORIGINAL these kids nowadays are just doing a rerun of our stuff...Any info on the former members?
Love this song... Wow my memories are sharp. I almost get tearful thinking of the past... The times were so care free back then and in the 60's 70's even the 80's we had so much fun ... Remember your Mother yelling to come in when the streetlight came on LOL
I just turned 50 (don't know how that happened!). Grew up in western Canada on the music of this era. So positive and hopeful (as opposed to the world-weary pseudo-sophisticated crap of today). Thank god for K-Tel records. The whole feeling for our generation was "here come the 70's - let's see what the possibilities are". Despite the consequent disappointment this music still inspires hope in the future. We just need to choose to believe in it.
52 years old and still groovin to it!This song takes me WAY back to the days that things were simple and the government wasn't a mess and life was sweet without all the bull we have to put up with these days!My first song that i had the nerve to dance to was the Archie's"Sugar Sugar"!THIS one was the second one that i ever danced to in front of anyone watching,(I was 12 by the way)!!!I found out that what you dance to...you have to feel the music to move to it correctly, move 2 the groove :-)
the guitar player with the hat looks like the scare-crow man on the wizard of oz, and the lady singer has a deeper voice than the little guy with the head-ban on. (but to get serious ...this song is timeless. i absolutely love it!)
I think of this song when I am going through hard times. It helps me "keep the faith" . I would love to hear Erykah Badu or India Arie do a version of this,
Absolutely one of the best pop-radio tunes of all time in my book. And it still wears perfectly well these days, which indicates its greatness. This one-hit-wonder group hit one of the longest home-runs ever recorded!!
Only 22 years Old but I always Listened To This Music When i Rode With my Mom On Saturdays Now I Listen to Atlanta's Greatest Hits Since I Got To School hear...
song reminds me of brother Richard ~ he was in jail ~ did not know what to write him about ~ so told him I liked this new song ~ many, many years later, as I was driving from NJ to PA after visiting him in hospital ~ heard this song on radio ~ ever since it makes me teary eyed ~ remembering when we were young ~ knowing his days of walking in the rays of a beautiful sun were soon to be over ~
What positive and uplifting music! A real inspiration for young kids. Now all you hear is a bunch of Rap-Crap with tacky sexual and violent lyrics. I'm glad I'm old and remember this beautiful music!
Well, I feel like 14 again! Best time. This song is timeless! Even though the clothing are dated. I have some of the best memories then. We should encourage this sort of outlook now. We really need it! Thanks for posting!
I hadn't heard this song in probably 35 years and was just flipping back and forth on youtube and when it got going the memories of youth and all that had passed since hit me and I started bawling lkike a baby as the voices moved me like no other song in many years.
Things, songs might be all about REALITY MAN now but it's nice to know that once people wished it to be so much better than "What it is."
I first heard this on the radio in 1970 when I was 12yrs old and away at Y camp in the midwest. At the time I didn't think anything of the fact that there was only one black kid in the whole camp. Everything in my life was good, and I didn't understand the troubles and racism others experienced. This song and many others helped me to find out and be a better human being..Thanks!
@myboylollipop09 What beautiful memories. I was eleven at that time away at a Christian summer camp call Tower Hill in MI. It's still there and my brothers and me were often the only black kids at the camp. But I didn't experience any racism either. Praie God!
@tony636able Thanks Tony for your nice comment..I miss those days, they seemed slower, easier and hopeful some how..There was still all the violence and crime like we have today. But then the music spoke to us. It was positive, hopeful for a better tomorrow. We had great writers then who really worked hard to create and write great music. I wish the kids of today had what we had, but they have to make there own way.. Best to you and your family. :))
Black Pride and creativity at it's finest, this was conscious music and thank god I grew up in the 70's to witness this type of excellence. I feel sorry for today's youth they have no one in music to give them that guidance to help them get through.
I just love this song. The lyrics are short and simple but powerful. I like the woman who comes out first. She's dressed in just regular blouse and slacks. Nothing flashy.
I wish they will cash my savings bond drive for Doomsday brought to you by The SoulTrain Station. I cannot tell you how Eddie Hazel and I are tab rivals! Check out my video. WHEN I sing on SoulTrain,I'll sing, I cannot lyp-singq but I PROMISE; you'll be laughing and crying, I put a groove on!
Love this song, so glad I grew up listening to good music such as this. My 17 yr old thinks my music in the days where cool. He likes listening to them.
i am 63 and was fortunate to grow up with all the great soul singers and groups of the 50's,60's,70',80, 90's, until now. they just don't make them like they used to! we have some great young singers out there-i just wish they would do some better material to showcase their great voices!!! thanks soso much for posting this great old song!!!!!!
is it just me or does the guy that came in on 1:03 look like micheal from good times?????? .......

and now lives quietly in the Carolinas, works (I believe) at a university.

This one-hit-wonder group hit one of the longest home-runs ever recorded!!

song reminds me of brother Richard ~ he was in jail ~ did not know what to write him about ~ so told him I liked this new song ~ many, many years later, as I was driving from NJ to PA after visiting him in hospital ~ heard this song on radio ~ ever since it makes me teary eyed ~ remembering when we were young ~ knowing his days of walking in the rays of a beautiful sun were soon to be over ~

Praie God!
tony636able 3 weeks ago
