If you go to Sete, France, around 24th of August during th festival of St Louis (the saint of the town) there will be enourmas joutes tournaments sent live on tv and also a party in the streets day and night for one week
It's not "gondola" and it's not only popular in Sète even if their Saint-Louis is the biggest "Joute Nautique" competition. It's one of the best & most popular Occitan tradition with bull sports... ;-)
Right Galeande, and SL compet is not only for setoise but for all jouteurs. The first pict of european joutes is from Stockholm 1550 on the waters in my "Stockholm from above"-video. Sailors spent free time with it. I tried to reintroduce it here during Water festival some y ago. But our water is to cold for it to be pop again. In Cairo museum is a pic (BC) which looks like j.. on the Nile. Could also be wariors. Nile water is not cold but very dirty. I have swimmed it. Euromessage/Erik
