I've always wondered about the ending of the Symphony in 3 Movements, too. It's silly.
Check out the end of the first movement of the Symphony in C: it's the opposite effect. After a chuckling period, he seems to ask, "You think I'm kidding?" and delivers a series of blows to the head.
@stickershomeplus Actually, it was intended as a satire of the Nazis (specifically the bassoon fugue). Read up on it, but it's actually a tour de force of parody and triumph.
@stickershomeplus As a kid I never thought of the ending as a joke, just like the end of Shostakovich 5. I thought he said he was trying to express the jubilance at the Allied victory? You think he was having us on?
