@sirmoog In a post from 3 years ago i found the name of the songs played in the whole video: "1st "Charmaine" - 2nd "Bye Bye Blues" - 3rd "Sous le Ciel de Paris" - 4th "El Cumbanchero" ".
Jesus Christ, David Nixon ! He's the last person I would have expected to have had a hand in the Mellotron 's development. I used to love him when I was a kid. Right enough he was a magician, and the Mellotron is a magical instrument,so maybe not so strange after all ! Aye, the Interweb's a wonderful thing !
Look for lots of contributions from the Mellotron when Opeth's new album is released (supposedly in September?) It's a diverse instrument that can add a lot of atmosphere to a song when it's in capable hands.
@MrGeorgios2020 It didn't, actually. Many rock bands still use it, tho in a more sophisticated way. For example, check out "Spaceboy" by The Smashing Pumpkins. The strings in the background are actually a mellotron.
@MrGeorgios2020; Sure, this demo is very cheesy, though you have to put it int he context of a pre-digital, pre-sequencer era, when the presets would have been more clever.
However, it absolutely *doesn't* show the side of the Mellotron was so popular with Jean-Michel Jarre, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, etc. *years* after it was technologically obsolete.
It's strange that a machine based around imperfect loops of analogue magnetic tape can often sound more atmospheric than the "real" thing.
@Who2Are1You I think I will get one too. Jean Michel Jarre uses one on most of his albums. It has a very mysterious sound. I used to think it sounded thin and cheesy, but now I love it. What sort of music do you play?
Gasp! That image at the end: It's on the KixPix studio CD; it is one of the 'wierd' videos you can watch on the 'Wacky TV' feature. Take a look for yourself at 0:34 of the youtube video "KID PIX WEIRD VIDEO CLIPS"
indeed Tony Banks used frequently in earlier Genesis tracks but also don't forget Mr Wakeman has had this in his collection during his time as a session artist before he joined the Strawbs or Yes.......most famous use of the machine outside of Strawberry Fields was on David Bowie "Life on Mars".......played by the now famous Rick Wakeman. As it goes the mellotron features on hundreds of pieces from the late 60's and 70's.
no one really used it for the rythym or for playing as a stand alone piece. No, its best use came in the hands of Mr. Tony Banks in Watcher of the Skies.
I have several top quality/expensive Korg, Roland, Yamaha keyboard workstations, samplers, etc. Some of the instrument presets are titled "Tron" something or other. I never knew they were in reference to a Mellotron. When I found out what it meant & read about it, I thought it only did string/flute loops (flute loops, hehehe, funny (Fruit/Flute). I didn't know it did organs, rhythm, etc. So with that in mind, I wonder how many/what films used a Mellotron for the film score?
@micheljch I don't distrust you, I just wish I knew of @ least 1 single example, like from a movie. Then I could be like "Ahhhhh......Ok. THIS (specific) soundtrack is using a mellotron". Not to sound sarcastic, but if it's so 'ubiquitous', do you know of any examples where it's used in a specific movie or album? Thanks! :-)
@gasplut lol...You haven't heard Refx's Nexus. It comes with some of the most realistic sounding instruemtns you can get in a virtual synthesizer today.
@satualm It does sound like the middle of the 3rd part of the melody to Charmaine but he's fudged up the chords a bit; I couldn't recognize it at first, but it's certainly fitting given the intended audience at the time.
@MaxAck ... Was anyone else waiting for The Moody Blues to crash this little soirée. "Eric, try one of these canapé shrooms while we search for the lost chord ..." ;-)
The professional keyboard player mainly uses organ sounds - the whole point was to sound like something else! Who would have thought this would lead to Watcher of the skies.
BTW, I think that is David Nixon the magician. How unlikely is that.
For all of those who think tape gets old, well yes, but right now ( before I turned the volume down to watch this amazing little video) I'm listening to a brand new old stock reel to reel tape of Brazil 66's greatest hits- it's over 40 years old if a day. I'm playing it on a 1959 Voice of Music HiFi reel to reel that I found in the trash, it looked brand new 5 years ago when I found it. Undoubtedly original tubes. I am using the line out. The sound is extremely pure, not hissy- just a Mellotron!
This video was quite a find... the demonstration of the Mellotron at 2:25 is incredible... I've only ever experienced it sound on prog rock records! That pianist is like the Jean Michel Jarre of Hackney.
I've just featured this video on my blog 'Music is the wine that fills the cup of silence' (link via the URL on my channel). My use of Mellotron may have to be completely re-evaulated after seeing this demonstration hahaha!
Paul McCartney demonstrated the Mellotron's capabilities to great effect in his 'Chaos & Creation at Abbey Road' TV Special in 2005. The Beatles used to the flute sound on it on the beginning of 'Strawberry Fields Forever'
@jckchrstphr Yep - fascinating to hear it all in a different context. I always used to think that most of the non-indian sections of that LP were recorded in some crappy studio in Bombay or ?, hence all the background noise. I'm starting to wonder how much more of that LP is pure Mellotron sounds . . .
