  • Games were awsome. Then developers started focusing on consoles....

  • This is what happens when you don't have to dumb down every single aspect of your game to appeal to mainstream console retards.

  • When i played this game i salvaged almost every single enemy vessel with exception of fighters throughout the single player. It took many reloads to do so but that last mission its safe to say my fleet engulfed that joke of a sphere defense thing. This was the best game ever.

  • The narrator makes this video incredibly chilling. His deep and clear voice.

  • I played this game on a Pentium I 166 MMX overclocked to 190MHz with a Voodoo2 8MB graphic card and Yamaha sound card. I even hooked a big external speaker to existing computer speakers to act as subwoofer to enjoy this game. This was somewhere around year 2000 (and yeah, I didn't have money to buy a better computer, but the heck, it even played Le Mans 24 Hrs!) Also, the black and white cutscenes are pre-rendered video, but a quality one.

  • R.I.P homeworld

  • facebook stalks me u kno

  • This is us in 10,000 years XD

also... YIPPEEEEE!!! I don't have to think about who is watching on facebook anymore!

  • is that open part the part the hyperspace core goes in?

  • i want a miniseries telling the story of homeworld. not a movie, since they'd cut out all the best bits and it'd be boring. A tv miniseries would be awesome!

  • Brings back a lot of memories. Cutscenes still send shivers down my spine

  • is that optimus prime narrating

  • @jetli80 Nope, it's Campbell Lane.

  • me want game now cant form proper english need me want now!!!! love at first site. me go find badass game now NOOWW!!!!

  • This game had a beautiful story and soundtrack. It was a hard game, but I respect that.

  • I had a brief Dune feeling when I saw the desert... Awesome game...

  • I have heard this music somewhere else. Does anyone know what is the track called, or who made it?

  • @KarhuTheBeast The song is called Agnus Dei. It is a latin liturgical hymn set to Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings.

  • @KarhuTheBeast they used it in the movie "platoon"

  • @mbravo00 @CrimsonInquisitor Thanks for information.I havent ever seen the movie "platoon", so its still quite a mystery where i first heard it...

  • @KarhuTheBeast do a youtube search for Platoon Trailer 1986. that movie made this song famous.

  • @KarhuTheBeast Samuel Barber - Adagio for strings

  • @KarhuTheBeast It's also used in the Movie "Platoon"

  • So perfect, so beatiful! Unforgettable...

  • asombroso muy bueno...

  • Outdated? We we're drewling over seveall Keyboard as i remember before finishing this awesome game! I miss those moments ;)

  • So what happen with the "new RTS" from Relic? Is November by now and I never knew nothing about it...

  • <3 Homeworld <3

  • If Microsoft would make its OS systems in some way compatible it would be nice to play gems like this again. Every two years, so many games made unplayable-the 'Compatibility Mode' on Hp Pavilion is a joke.

  • @abbamanic Most old games are playable if you have the right software. The problem with the late-nineties windows games is that a lot of them had 16-bit installers, which for some reason Microsoft didn't think we would need anymore, so they didn't include compatibility in the 64-bit versions of Windows. So it takes some tinkering to get old stuff to play right.

  • You know, after playing both homeworld 1 and 2, I still felt that the gameplay of 1 as well as the voice acting was far superior, even the storyline itself. hell everything short of graphics was superior in 1. whatever the case, homeworld is my favorite si-fi series, right next to mass effect, of only there could be a crossover game.

  • Rewatching this, hearing about a people that forgot all there differences and united for a shared endeavor and sacrificed so much and accomplished so much... and knowing what their fate would be, that their dream led to their destruction. The thought just tears me up inside.

  • the best rts space game ever created

  • MUSIC! VOICES! So emotional! Even after all these years I will always remember that game! While playing I was in my little world feeling so responsible for mother ship and all cryos with ppl... man.. Not many games like HW

  • the story of homeworld its even better than battlestar and starwars and startrek, i agree i always loved hw and of course the kith sotaw. the beastslayers.

  • is it me or does the narrator sound like the narrator for the english verison of Gundam Wing: his name is Campbell Lane if i remember correctly.

  • This beautiful Intro gave me goosebumps. The Designers Managed to Manifest the yearning u get when watching into the nightsky. I Played alot of outstanding games and each One could evoke Big Feelings (diablo, baldurs Gate, icewind Dale, elderscrolls and Many more ). And although i wouldnt Call HW my absolute favourite game ive yet to See auch aweinspiring cutscenes!!! I was really glad they copied the narration style 1:1 in HW2.

  • This game made me a nerd. Its fuhqing sick. I can't believe the way I use to fortify my resources collects like it was presidential motorcade. And the way I use to take out the destroyer with a shitload of cheap scouts while mashing the z button.. good times. I need this on my acer a500 tab. I was playing Galaxy on fire2 (i dindnt know there was a 1) and all it reminded me off was this masterpiece which is homeworld.

  • lol 60 years, damn

  • "Hiigara. Our home."

    It still gives me shivers.

  • @Vrikk i was going to write the same exact thing.

  • I just love this game...never boring! :)

  • You did a beautiful job with this video, and the sound quality is excellent. Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!

  • "Higaara. Our home." So epic...HW was truly revolutionary - one of its kind. No other RTS - or barely any game whatsoever - had invested so much in creating a great plot in a foreign environment. I haven't even completed it, and i still think it's great.

  • @ZerooOne01 Then, I urge you to finish it. IT - IS - EPIC. Believe it.

  • Just perfect.Cant wait for the third game although the first was better than Cataclysm and 2 both in gameplay and storyline.

  • Im the 222222 person viewing this eeeek

  • The only video game that made me cry because of the story. It was so good.

  • What really sucks is that I used to have the official soundtrack of Homeworld that came with the copy of the game I had. Lost the damn thing and have missed it every since. :( A really amazing soundrack if you can find it.

  • We are away...

  • They should make a Homeworld game like Mass Effect.

  • lol i bought this at my churches picnic for $1

  • @seargentermy Best dollar you ever spent.

  • I recorded this and uploaded in widescreen HD on my channel...

  • This is just such a beautiful game...

  • So that's where Carl Sagan's astronomy spaceship landed...

  • I cant find this game ANYWHERE anymore, and i lost my originals to 1 and 2 :( Anyone know anywhere they can be acquired or bought?

  • If they make a 3rd one i think it would have to be a prequel seeing as the age of sjet basically made peace for a innumerable amount of years.

  • Why dont you own homeworld D:

    You must!!

  • This game was so. Damned. EPIC!!

I miss it... But it's always been a favorite.

  • As we know in the outer space there cannot appear any sounds, so all noises from the Mothership are... irrelevant. But still these sound great.

  • @Scravell They're all done by radio.

  • If fans can code parallax shaders for Minecraft, why not games like this?

I wish to zoom in on the ships and see crazy details.

  • For the longest time I thought Adagio for Strings was the official HW theme song. Every time I heard it afterwards I had the strongest sense of deja vu.

I remember playing this game, way back when developers made games for the love of the games themselves. The results showed. Homeworld. Freespace1+2. The old Final Fantasy/Squaresoft games. MGS1 and the Silent Hill series. They ALL stand the test of time. Not much can be said about today's games.

Well, we still got Portal 2 recently. Not bad.

  • the guy who is talking sounds like the guy who talks in the transformers movie

  • ".. the mothership has cleared the scaffold... we are away!!!"

I wonder how many has shed a tear when this line is read?

  • @paanjang16 I got goosebumps and still do the first time i saw it in game. This game is why i play EvE online now. The voice acting in this game was excellently picked.

  • When I first saw this intro, I think it must have been the first time I'd ever heard Adagio for Strings in any form. Strange that I should hear it in a completely different emotional context to its apparent intent.

Think about it: Relic Studios took what must be the most sorrowful work in the entire classical repertoire and turned it into the anthem for the pinnacle of an entire race's achievement.

And then of course, the end credits music. They must have been trying to give us an awesome OD!

  • beautiful game, i like the sense of scale those ships had, you look at them and realize it must have taken hundreds of years to build them... and then you find even larger things floating in space :)

  • you know what is so good about this game? the mood and the feeling conveyed from the game is like a painting, when your carrier explodes and not a sound is listened, it's beautiful...

it's like a fleeting dream, mid way through the game, you're completely absorbed by it.

  • @Kesvalk Not a sound is listened?

  • boring shit

  • @hatefuIIkat go fucking hide in a closet then

  • @Shanfeu u pretty mad.

  • EPIC! FOREVER! I'LL BE 80 AND I'LL STILL PLAY IT

  • @mroovax That's the spirit, man!

  • The most climatic intro ever...

  • i demand muah fuckaing grueling nugga shet

  • hiigara is fucking awesome i demand penis in my mouth

  • one huned ears ago nN ekspetition vassent. N N shent sta shet burrrrr in sand. deep insai the rurururu was a seek wret stoun

  • Only Nexus The Jupiter Incident comes close to rivaling Homeworld and Homeworld 2. Homeworld 3 would outsell even Star Craft 2 (in my opnion)

  • Even over a decade later, this scene still moves me to tears.

The fulfillment of a people, of a species, after centuries of in-fighting and decades of united labor, the opportunity to reach out and seize their destiny amongst the stars in one great, united endeavor coupled with Barber's Adagio for Strings is too powerful not to strike a chord with my very soul, even after all these years.

  • 15 people have NO SOULS.

  • So sad... so lonely... so deep... I really loved it!!!

  • I fucking love Homeworld Cataclysm (actually I'm playing it these days), but I have never played the original Homeworld, I need to find it lol

  • hey guys, if you hit up encyclopedia hiigara(homeworld wiki) you will see that THQ has full rights to homeworld officially, and a representative has told us the next great RTS from them will be revealed august 2011. Hope remains, exiles, for we will once again return to our home soon enough.

  • @Reaverhobbies probably be a fuckin facebook game somehow.

  • @ryanrule2 THAT i doubt with 99% of my being. A company of heroes sequel is actually what's going around the internetz. Time will tell. This week I believe the announcement will be made.

  • I have never played this before, but this looks fucking badass.

  • Honestly... I don't think we can ever make a better one. I think this game was just made great, and you can't top it. We all want more, a better version, but I doubt we will see it. This is why Homeworld is one of the greatest games of all time.

  • Sound like Adagio for Strings music

  • @TechnoDevotee Originally by Tiesto

  • @Manboyno5 despite tiesto being awesome, this song is very very old, quite a bit older than tiesto.

  • @Galient5 ;)

  • we caught em napping!

  • Crawling in my skin when I hear it

  • I think the issue with sequels or re-releases today is with the current copyright holder. That and the original creator of the series retired from the games industry to go raise horses in Montana or something.

Shame. One of the RTS all-time greats. HW1 and 2 both.

  • way outdated by current standards. Still a very beautiful game that doesnt require a monster computer to play. One of the greatest games ever.

  • Whenever I play I cannot get any of the intro dialogue or the Bentusi, is it b/c I use W7?

  • @PigmanR i'm running this off my win7 lappy and it runs fine, doubt it's win7 issue.

  • I remember being at a garage sale, buying this game and another game (well actually I was younger so my dad probably bought them).

I really only wanted to play the other game but once I got into Homeworld, the other game... well I don't even remember what it was called :P

  • adagio for strings fits so damn well into the game :) i love it

  • is the best game ever!!! amazing!! bravo!! bravo!!

  • it's ok that you don't own it, this game is incredibly hard to find...but one of the best games I've ever seen

  • Homeworld was the most inspired game I've ever played. Truly a shame that the odds on becoming a trilogy are even lower than the odds of successfully navigating an asteroid field...(approximately 3,720 to 1)

  • better than 2

  • BEST GAME EVER

  • I remember playing this game years ago, i want to do it all over again.

Going on ebay and ordering Homeworld , H2, and Cataclyzm. reexperience the epicness :D!!!

  • Truly epic! One of the best game intros ever.

  • wow,hand draw!

  • I have Sins of a Solar Empire. i love space games but I and not a very good strategy player even though I love it. Is Sins of a Solar Empire (Won pc game of the year) any match to HomeWorld 2? I just curious as to "all" the differences. i am also very very very exited for this amazing game if anyone hadn't heard of it check it out. It's going to be amazing! Google "Infinity Space game" and click on first link. :) And no I'm not spamming I'm informing. I'm very curious about my question. Thanks!

  • @X7ELI7X

No, it isn't. Homeworld is far better and deeper than Sins of a Solar Empire. When I finish HW for the first time, I felt the urge to scream "WE MADE IT! WE'RE HOME, DAMMIT! HOME!"

If you get the cance, play HW and you won't regret it.

And yes, Infinity is beyond awesome. In a dfferent way than HW is, but I'm not sure if it will ever be released. It's been in development for several years now and I'm not holding my breath for it's release.

  • I always wondered why relic had to do so much ret-conning w/ Homeworld 2. I'd understand if it was Homeworld 5....but one game out and they're playing shell games with the previous masterpiece's plotline....

  • i cried while watching this oh the memories they dont make games like this anymore.

  • Motership designed and build by Black Mesa.

  • This is easily one of the best intros ever. Epic, spooky and emotional. Relic knows what's up.

  • i think this would work out as a great TV series. of course, like every other show, things would be stretched out, but it could probably last as long as SG:A

  • my favorite opening to any game to my all time favorite game series, I still play homeworld 2 complex every once in a while

  • To me, the destruction of the homeworld right after the first mothership test was a real blow, and the choral arrangement---what a decision---of "Adagio for Strings" made that one of the saddest moments in gaming.

I had never heard Samuel Barber's "Adagio" before, but how could you ever forget it after that? I eventually found a piano version to start learning (years later).

  • @TargetRender

He did the voice-over to the intro scenes in Gundam Wing, if you ever watched that. He was also the original hybrid in BSG Razor.

  • Aún me pone los pelos como escarpias y me emociona hasta lo inimaginable... Jamás he visto y disfrutado tanto con un jeugo, con un inicio. El Agnus Dei lo descubrí por ello. No pudo haber elección mejor.

  • Aún me pone los pelos como escarpias y me emociona hasta lo inimaginable... Jamás he visto y disfrutado tanto con un jeugo, con un inicio.

  • Best video game ever made. They should redo this game with DirectX 11 technology keeping all the original audio intact. The game would sell like wildfire.

  • @palui

How do you sell a wildfire?

  • @CrimsonInquisitor

Put a happy go lucky bear and deem is childsafe.

  • @CrimsonInquisitor On pack with airholes.

  • @CrimsonInquisitor on a can :D

  • @CrimsonInquisitor Silly Crimsoninquisitor. Wildfires sell themselves :)

  • @CrimsonInquisitor In jars.

  • @CrimsonInquisitor Put it inside a steel box with some wood and then sell it within 5 hours of capturing. NOTE: remember to make airholes.

  • @CrimsonInquisitor Start the Fire. Sell wood to people

  • @CrimsonInquisitor well, we could get Fox to spin the positive aspects of burning down forests while spinning up that smoke is good for you and charcoal would benefit US and international economies by providing new jobs for firemen, natural gas burners, medical personnel and assorted cottage industries. Whee. >.<

Also, thank you for posting this. this is an awesome game.

  • @CrimsonInquisitor u get payed to give an idiot a match

  • @CrimsonInquisitor It's a metaphor. If you didn't know that, read some books, get an education, join the intelligent.

  • @victorvents The metaphor you're talking about is " *SPREADING* like wildfire ", not "selling" (notice the subtle difference between the two 's'-words...) :P Somehow, I doubt wildfires would have much of a market share... should they be up for sale.

  • @CrimsonInquisitor It's the new hot thing! All your neighbors already have it!

  • @CrimsonInquisitor small cardboard boxes with HOMEWORLD written on them.

  • @CrimsonInquisitor

    Very carefully!

  • @CrimsonInquisitor You take someone you really don't like.. like you.. and you apply the fire to that person where after you sell the whole package.

  • @CrimsonInquisitor very carefully.

  • @CrimsonInquisitor wildfire will burn everything. You dont sell wildfire..wildfire sells you.

  • @CrimsonInquisitor To eskimos.

  • @palui well, re-encode the audio, please. Those encoding artifacts were, and are, horrible.

  • @palui fans always think this way :-)

I would also appreciate a remake, but they could improve audio quality, too ;)

  • @palui This game made such a lasting impression on me, that as a young game developer, the first thing i am doing after i graduate is making an Asimovian 3d RTS to continue in the great legacy that is Homeworld!

  • fuck yea

  • captain obvious, of course its engine is outdated NOW! This game was made in 1999! Anyway, I think it's one of the best games ever made.

  • i wonder if our race would unite if we found an acient starship under the ice of the antarctica.

  • @cocojumb0 Umm... Don't think so. We'd probably start a brand new war for control over it -- human nature, you know... (which is why this story had to be about some other, fictitious race; it wouldn't have played for humans >:D)

  • @nicadi2005 thats ignorant. humanity is capable of greatness

  • @cocojumb0 We can only hope that I'm wrong... But this is what I see all around me, each and every day... I cannot just go along, pretending that "all is well"; can you?

  • @Xytos As much as I love sc2... your an idiot.

  • @Xytos And how do you feel about the first Starcraft, which was released a year before this game? You know, in the "dark ages" you so loathe?

They've been having professional Starcraft 1/Brood War tournaments in South Korea ever since its release, even after the release of Starcraft 2.

I suggest you rethink your mentality of "it sucks because it was made over ten years ago."

  • I'm curious. Any word on if/when someone's planning on either a movie or a miniseries for Homeworld? If you agree on this being a good idea, thumbs up, please

  • >built on a really outdated game engine

Uh, wasn't the engine one of the best for its times?

  • @kilmindaro3

    Outdated by _current_ standards.

  • @CrimsonInquisitor

The video description is kind of vague on that.

  • @CrimsonInquisitor so what? still it looks amazing, because the developers put emphasis on aesthetics instead of technology. If technology was important to them, the game would look ridiculous today. but it is beautiful despite advancements in computer graphics.

  • @CrimsonInquisitor The cutscenes aren't based on the game engine, and the game engine is fine. You are probably talking about the 3D engine, which is also fine, unless somehow DX10 textures, bump mapping, and specular make for a good game.

  • @CrimsonInquisitor then it wasn't outdated. It was state of the art.

  • @CrimsonInquisitor

Actually, by saying the game was 'built on a really outdated game engine', sounds like you mean the engine was already outdated when the game came out. However its cutscenes (which DIDN'T use the game engine) didn't feature a top-notch engine indeed, for they had a cartoon-like style that can't be properly named "outdated"... unforgettable game tho. :'(

  • @kilmindaro3

This game not about engine... It's about "home" and "hope"...

  • @kilmindaro3 "for it's times"

I don't think you understand what out*date*d means

  • Homeworld best game ever :)

  • This game is almost 11 years old... and still puts many games of today to shame.

  • i wish i had finished this game while i still had windows!! T-T

  • Time for me to break out Homeworld and play it again.
