  • Now I see how The Matrix is a knock-off of an anime.

  • whatever you respond in the comments he proves his point.

  • The white rabbit one was intentional...that refrences AIW

  • This is far fetched

  • Wasn't matrix being a remix kinda the point of the entire movie?!

  • Dark City is the real thing, The Matrix is rip-off... improved, transformed and combined.

  • What is a bit disturbing me, is that the amount of entertainment media, that I want to watch/read now has grown exponentially. Curse you, Robert Grigsby Wilson!

Hah, at least I'm already watching Ghost in the Shell 2nd gig, that's a bit calming.

  • I saw The Matrix only because of the retelling of old stories ... and lots of old stories. Many of which are very fascinating. That is the whole point of supporting such a freedom to remix things. It was a great series only because it was a remix of other things. Anyone who thinks this is "grasping at straws" has either lived in a cave, or simply doesn't want to face a simple fact: It's all been done before. Innovation isn't creating from nothing, it's improving on the existing.

  • ok lez establish a rule - everything that has a high chance of happening casually in real life and happens to happen in movies is NOT an idea borrowed from one movie to another, ok?

  • I just realized that the green letter jibberish that the Matrix shows is composed of tons of Japanese Katakana written backwards. Why, I dunno.

  • Martial Arts, dating back thousands of years, show similarities in a few movies?! I'm shocked!!!

Have you noticed how many movies about race cars depict cars with FOUR wheels! Everything is a remix...

  • still, in my opinion, matrix beats them all, in several obvious ways.

  • really good... I embed in my site. Really I like video

  • Ah, good ol' Philip, I knew that from reading one of his novel...

  • Hey Rob, the jump at 5:56 is from the first Blade. Cheers!

  • WOW!! based on the commets ,it seems like everyone missed the point! hahah

  • at 5:51 it says that the cartoon is based on a manga ^^

  • Let's remember that inspiration is an illusion.

Everything that exists was brought about by something else.

thus there is no shame in ripping things off. (just remember to give credit)

  • When sofa continues their act, this video will not be there much longer.

  • If pipa goes trough, this will be removed, and the uploader sued.

  • WOW this is so waste of time

  • Yay for Japanese and Hong Kong movies.

  • You say "Remix" - Andy and Larry called it "Inspiration"

When you get right down to it, it's a cognitive experience, we are all guilty of taking things we have seen or heard and using them as inspiration for something else, it's just how the brain operates.

  • @Neoyoshimetsu inspiration? whats wrong with you?

  • And this is why the Matrix will go down in history as being fucking amazing.

  • They saw greatness and they combined and altered it. Down with copyright.

  • Correction:

4:51 DOCTOR WHO: THE DEADLY ASSASSIN (IT WAS MADE IN 1976, NOT 1993)

  • I´m an video editor, and what you did there is a really fine work. Gathering all and putting them toghether as you did deserves my respect. Besides the point of view and the opinion on the subject, thumbs up.

    Keep doing it!

  • every day i hear a refrence to a movie or a book etc. why can't movie caracters do the same without being criticized for ripping off another story?

Everything has been done before. give me one original idea wich has never been thought of before or i s similar in any way.

  • @MrBennybjorn The secret is to take what somebody else has dona and improve upon it. That is what we call progress and innovation and it's the reason socety exists.

  • 3:35

Is that the Half-Life 2 shotgun?

  • @jaydeekayex thats how the REAL LIFE shotgun looks like and yes looks like in half life 2 ... Didint boxes or humans in half life 2 looks like real boxes and humans ? wait isnt the color red from half life 2 like real life color ?

  • @Cobac Grammar, my friend. Look into it.

  • @jaydeekayex not necessary as long as you understand what im trying to say . WAIT A MINUTE WAS IT A LIFE OR DEATH TEST ? I FAILED THE TEST OMG .

  • @Cobac To be honest, I have no idea what you tried to say in your last post. I seriously doubt it's anything to worry about either.

  • @jaydeekayex Well you are right about that :) .

  • This was awesome. Very well done. This must've taken ALOT of time to make. Kudos.

  • Funny how when Hollywood takes something from the past they call it "their inspiration"

When we take something from them they call it a crime.

  • Grigsby was really stretching it with some of the scenes. Though some of it was a clever comparison, I will say that.

  • please.. what is the name of the music ??

  • @joaopaiva87 0:20 – Rob Dougan – Clubbed To Death (Kurayamino Variation)

    1:44 – Hive – Ultrasonic Sound

2:30 – Lunatic Calm – Leave You Far Behind (Lunatics Roller Coaster Mix)

    3:38 – Propellerheads – Spybreak

4:39 – Rob Dougan – Clubbed To Death (Kurayamino Variation)

  • The Matrix has always been my favorite film of all time. As a matter of fact, ever since I was only 3 years old.

  • i am going to watch all these other movies! fucking legit

  • dude, just imagine how much tv he had to watch and what an astonishing photographic memory this dude must have to put most of this together.

i mean, my god think about it.

  • if only they had used the scene from blues brothers whwn they are finnaly caught just after the"freeze" clip, they missed out on a golden opertunity there

  • The "Matrix's shooting scene is a remix" made me facepalm. Hard. Otherwise, neat.

  • It's annoying that you think they have to make up new moves in order to not copy the past.

  • lol there is no doubting that the guys who came up with the matrix are total anime/kung fu movie nuts. they said it themselves in a couple interviews. kinda funny when you see it all put together like that.

  • Next stop: Hideo Kojima

  • its not a remix, all karate is the same.. xD

  • I can't believe all of these movies ripped off the Matrix.

  • No, see it's not copyright infringement because the entertainment issue hasn't passed a law against it yet! DUH! :)

  • NICE VIDEO..I liked it alot but the moral of this story what seems to be left out is...Zion in the matrix film was just the last city/place humans could have sex and evolve...Without the machines interfering...lol Social darwinism at it's finest...lol

  • The Matrix is my favorite movie, and the matrix trilogy is my favorite trilogy. But without the copying that was done during the creation of the matrix it wouldn't be as good. I'm perfectly happy with it.

  • sure, not much is completely original anymore. Now the entertainment industry abound must find the true talent in all of this, making it new, refreshing, and iconic like The Matrix and others like it did.

  • It's true, the amount of ideas in either movies, music, tv, books ect, that are completely 100% original is almost nill. Whether we realize it or not even subconsciously the ideas we get often come from things we have seen or heard and don't even remember. Anyone who doesn't see the validity of the premise of these videos is simply in denial. If you think this video is a stretch then go join the RIAA, MPAA, or DMCA and start turning in your neighbors.

  • ever hear of an homage?

  • Perfect

  • Chinese need to stop going back in time to copy The Matrix.

  • Looks like inspiration rather than just blatantly copying ideas.

  • @tomofv I think Kirkby's point is that inspiration and blatant copying are not that different. Nor is "blatant copying" any less deserving of credit. See his other films.

  • Ghost in the Shell doesn't surprise that much since the Wachowski Bros. quoted that film as their major influence for The Matrix.

  • Wouldn't "Everything is derivative" be a more accurate title?

  • @dyne313

At this point any kind of wording is accurate depending on who you ask.

  • See? that how you rip off....I MEAN use a scene from another movie as a homage. I'm looking at you, Godzilla Final Wars.....and Snatcher.

  • it's all been done before, just put a twist on it. Art, music, etc

  • brb, obligated to watch Ghost in the Shell now

  • you forgot to include Serial Experiments Lain

  • what about the shot in Blade where he dodges the slow-motion bullet?

  • Welcome to 1999.

  • I can see why The Matrix is heavily inspired by Ghost in The Shell after all the Brothers are into anime

  • Comment removed

  • Neat idea, but a lot of it was really grasping at straws

  • @jakester404

Actually the creators of the matrix fully admit they used a lot of these film as inspiration, Mostly notable Ghost in the shell.

  • @jakester404 Inspiration stupid.

  • @jakester404 They took Ghost in the Shells concepts, and literally recreated scene for scene in some parts. Wachowski bro's have already admitted this. They take inspiration and ideas from everywhere.. and there's nothing wrong with that if such movies such as matrix is produced! The martial arts is similar because Yuen Wo Ping directed all those fight sequences, including matrix. The dual guns are no doubt inspired by Woo/Chow Yun Fat.

It's not reaching, it's just knowing history.

  • @ex0duzz so then why are people sued all the time for simply doing what you described? to bad more huge corporations don't know history..

  • @jakester404 I do not agree.

  • Some of this was interesting, a lot of it was nitpicking as the kung fu and gun fighting elements were purposefully done as homages to Chinese cinema, as well as wire fu.

  • @Lokid20 I think that's a point. Remixes aren't "stealing", they're taking something that's come before and doing a new spin on it. The Matrix is taking films and stories that have come before, and spinning it together into a new story. It's not a bad thing.

  • Amazing video. I knew that they copied John Woo movies, Akira and Ghost in the Shell... but to see all those other movies they stole from blew my mind.

  • "If you die in VR, do you die in reality?", "There is no 'reality' as you know it."

  • Amazing work of search in kung fu movies. I think I had never seen some of then before this video. Thank you.

  • MATRIX trilogy is overrated

  • Thanks for uploading. VIMEO sucks on Mac PowerPC (I know, ha ha)

MATRIX was/is over rated movie. The 2nd and 3rd films sucked.

  • whoa - typo 04.50 'The Deadly Assassin' is not from 1993 - maybe 1973?

  • Hey, I saw this the other day and really enjoyed it. I'd hoped we might see a quick reference to Farscape in it (mostly for all the leather and long coats) but alas, it wasn't to be. Still, really enjoyed this. Stellar work.

  • Dude come on, you're just finding scenes from other movies that look vaguely similar to the scenes from the matrix. Sure some of them are really similar but of those most of them I would consider to be homage to their originals.

  • @humdot Actually that's how films are made, those simillar scenes are not a coincidence. As for other shows, much of them take ideas of The Allegory of the Cave by Plato. That is old as fuck and so a lot of movies and literature is based off of that.

  • About the fights: In the Matrix world, this is normal. They have learned how to fight from experience contained in a computer something like the Matrix itself. So, basically, all the caracters in the Matrix redo the popular move of the humanity.

I know movies are a remix, but this one actually have an excuse ;-)

    Still great vid and effort!

  • well done, this is awesome....

also.... ghost in the shell is bad ass.

  • Kirby has WAAYYYY too much free time...

  • ok more than half your comparisons are full of shit , exp: he is fight with 2 pistols .........yeah and so ???? that doesnt make is a remix ....?

  • To be fair a lot of this comes from either allusions or similar choreographers, and the fact that the idea of reality being an allusion is hardly an original concept.

  • @RabidFlaminChipmunks It is an original concept. Just not of our time, it's over played but not many laymen know the meaning behind it but take it at face value. The Allegory of the Cave really takes the cake since many shows/books/movies use what Plato wrote. In fact the entire fucking film is based off of it, and if you were to think it isn't just read what Plato wrote and you'll see the clear connection between the two.

  • wow. and here we were, thinking the matrix was a completely original film.

  • still not as much stolen shit as Kill Bill

  • its called a homarge

  • I found your theory about everything being a remix of The Matrix very funny. A lot of the clips featured in your video, are from before The Matrix was ever created.

  • @xdeviltrunksx deeerrrrrr.....he is saying the matrix used many movies as inspirations for their scenes smart ass

  • @a24q7 Oh. Well then thank god I'm a smart ass, and not a dumb ass like you are. Had me worried there for a minute, until you reassured me.

  • @xdeviltrunksx Dude, chill and watch the rest of his movies to understand his "Everything is a remix"-project. I suggest starting with nr. 1.

  • @xdeviltrunksx If I wanted a come back id ask you to spit

  • @xdeviltrunksx LMAO!!!!

  • All of the Kung-Fu movies are directed, or choreographed, by Yuen Woo-ping. That is why they are all similar. He also did The Matrix.

  • also check this site...

    cracked com/article_19443_7-classic-movies-you-didnt-know-were-rip-offs_p2.html

  • I would say the martial art movies have alot of the same or similar elements in them. And, even though I enjoy them greatly, some of them do copy and duplicate within just that genre.

  • I appreciate the effort you put into these videos. You should have alot more views, best of luck to ur future videos!

  • This doesn't provide the insights of the previous videos, how art & technology expand on past developments, that was really interesting. But a full video of comparing movie shots provides no insight beyond - look! They nabbed that shot from another film!

So the 'your world isn't real' concept has been used before? Yes? So has vampire, alien invasion, zombie, zero to superhero, body/mind swap & virus outbreaks.

Thanks for these, and please make more, but this is not my favourite.

  • @MrNoosphere I agree with you. There just is something missing here. And I'm not sure what it is. I've seen the Anime movies that mentioned in here. But not the marital art films. I think part of it was the machine that taps into the mind. So it's the sameish as Total recall and Ghost in a Shell. But there's kinda no way around it. I guess that's the big thing I am thinking. Is that there's no way around certain things. The thing with Zeplin was better because you could tell there

  • @heretherenothing That there are different things that could've been done but not done. And the things with Kill Bill was better because they were almost shot for shot the same things with his own style added. Some of this is I guess like that but some of the points you put out are just that. Themes that are in this genre. It's not enough to dislike this video. But then again it's not enough to like this video either. Good job though on pointing something out.

  • @MrNoosphere Actually ...the movie is much more deep than the whole, reality is an illusion view you gave. If you were to read The Allegory of the Cave by Plato (and it seems you haven't even heard of it) then you will clearly know what the movie is trying to communicate since it and the book is exactly the same. Since that book is old as fuck, a lot of people had used the plot as ideas. What the matrix expresses is another huge metaphor for the book. No the zombie, vampire bullshit.

  • @finnsia at 4.50 there's a comparison between the Matrix and a Doctor Who episode. These two clips played side to side cover the aspect of their world being a simulation. The point being the reality as an illusion idea is not new and has been used before the Matrix was released. My previous comment said that that's true of loads of concepts used in movies and not a big insight. I wasn't commenting on what the movie the Matrix is about, I was commenting about the content of this video.

  • @MrNoosphere Don't be silly. I don't know when Dr.Who was written but Allegory of the Cave was written in 380 BC and it still used today. And so was I, what Plato had written has been used hundreds and hundreds of times. The entire plot in Matrix is based off of what Plato wrote. And again if you didn't read the first time- the plot is much deeper than the concept of reality being an illusion. Read the allegory of the cave (or if you're lazy, youtube it).The plot isn't as simplistic as it seems

  • @finnsia - This is the comments page for 'Everything is a Remix: The Matrix' and I am commenting on that video. I know of Plato's Cave & the concepts it illustrates, I know the Matrix borrows very heavily from the allegory. My original comment & my explanation is: I'm not talking about the Matrix or Plato's Cave. My comments are based on what is shown in the above video. Arguing that the Matrix is more complicated than zombie genre films is perfectly valid, but that's not what this video says.

  • @MrNoosphere Oh sorry about that, I guess I misread what you wrote. Yes you're right though from another perspective, he also shows how all the techniques of capturing the audience is recycled of which is what the entire series of Everything is a Remix is about.

  • @finnsia No worries

  • Wow, you guys have a lot of time in your hands...

  • Fight Moves ans techniques QRE the same. thats no copying. dont exaggerate.

  • Wow RGW, you made an excellent job. Again. :)

  • Hoo-ah!

  • I really enjoy your videos, thanks.

  • Amaazing work dude...

  • kirby you do your homework very well, joseph campbell, akira, ghost in the shell, I would even suggest Equilibrium and gun fu - gun kata?

  • Comment removed

  • Amazing editing. I love your videos.

  • this introduced me to sooooo many movies that I WILL watch

  • kirby you deserve more publicity ive seen all your videos you have great talent !

  • Ok I understand that the main concept and the scenes from movies are usually ideas and remix'es. But it seems you cant make a movie with out some one saying that happend in blah blah blah. Like Someone punching a guy and they go flying! 2 movies or more have that in them and ya say they copied it from blah blah blah.

  • Is any movie truly original? I'm pretty sure now.

  • @mgregggphone You missed the point of the video...

  • (This video deserves much more views)²

  • I don' t know whether The Matrix came before this or not, but there is a book in the Pendragon series that has almost an exact relation to this. Can't seem to remember which of the books it was. Thumbs up if you know what I'm talking about.

  • whoa nice he even got ghost in the shell

  • That's awesome. It just conffirmed to me that the whole plot was thoroughly studied and improved to get to this point, carefully selected scenes and quotes.

  • :D This is amazing.

  • I read that the Wachowski brothers made the crew watch Ghost in the Shell as a guide to how they wanted The Matrix to look and feel.

  • Fantastic job dude! Love this series

  • So is this whole series about how certain movies have similar shots?

  • Finally!

  • Yes!
