  • not a very graceful burial

  • i would hate for fish to be going in and out of my dead wife... to each his own

  • since I am atheist when I die there is nothing else after death, so I would love to become a reef ball to support fishes

  • @Krinoit You don't have to be atheist to want to be a reef ball. People from all walks of life, all religions, participate. For people of faith, there is still an after life whether you are buried or cremated as it isn't the physical body that moves on.

  • Excellent!! I wanna be a reef ball!!

  • Being cremated and dropped in the ocean is one thing, getting molded into a concrete reef is...

It's like a reef graveyard. Doesn't seem like a very attractive idea, especially for swimmers/divers who might want to see the reefs.

  • whatever, not only are you missing the entire point, but your opinion is based on your own very limmited perception, if your ashes are molded into a clay reef or spread around, what's the friggin diff? YOU ARE DEAD. Well one difference is at least in this case, it provides a home and securing point for MILLIONS of other life forms. I think that's wonderful.

  • Also adding to twasbrillig33's point: Who cares about the freaking divers/swimmers. If they are bothers by this burial ground in which is intended for people would like to be cremated into a Reef Ball, and put into the ocean, then go swim/dive somwhere else. Another thing, i doubt they put these in spots where it is highly swam/dived in. So that is a very limited chance for that to be the case.

  • @shocellist That's pretty shallow minded thinking. You don't put an artificial reef where a reef still exists. As these balls lay at the bottom of the ocean, they attract different species and end up becoming a reef, which is beautiful for divers. It doesn't happen overnight, it takes time. As a diver, I would find it very interesting to read the various plaques and pay respect to these people who are helping the environment even in death. It becomes a reef, not a tombstone graveyard.

  • nice English dahwang!

  • fuck, 70%

  • I know, it's scary to think we could potentially lose such a big chunk of the coral reefs so quickly... Something needs to be done before we destroy the ocean, and fuck ourselves over.

  • The mafia was doing something similar a long time before these guys.

  • lol .. That's right .. what they would do is chain your legs to a block of cement and drop you in.

  • Introducing more carbon into the oceans. Fantastic idea. Thank you, dead people.

  • CO2 is produced through decomposition but in oceanic conditions the gas is almost immediately filtered by the Oceanic flora. Also this decomposition allows for more oceanic flora, therefore food for primary consumers, helping the niche. The material used for the 'tombs' also act as wavebreakers thereby reducing the effect of backwash and increasing the swash effect.

  • Ya I got that. My point was that the addition of carbon from human remains doesn't help. All for reef balls, not for human remains in reef balls.

  • Mike Rowe made one of these on Dirty Jobs haha.

  • wdf, he's getting desprate, i can't see how that is dirty, cuz he already poured cement.....

  • dont mess with Mike Rowe. hes awesome!

im pretty sure he got really wet and covered in cement in that episode but i mean there are only so many dirty jobs out there...

  • ... :/ true

  • This is sick! I can't believe anyone would let fish live inside their.. Loved ones.

    Disgusting, degrading and overall disrespectfull.

  • Its not really, cos there loved ones want this to be done. We sacrifice our bodies when we have no more use for them so that other life can prosper.

  • Lick the sack of balls

  • uh, did you even saw the whole video?

  • That's a good idea and very touching.

  • I agree.

  • Bye Bye

  • this is disgusting xD

    i want it 2 XD!!

but i think it might be better to make those corals out of used stuff like some kind of recycling maybe?

  • LOL< if mankind did'nt screw with nature to begin with, they would not have to help it so much. Besides nature takes its course, it figures mankind wants some sort of spotlight, gee lets throw our waste in the ocean, the fish can make homes from it.

  • I hope they didn't send down that picture of the one deceased man holding that fish...it might offend some of his new tenants.

  • that is so cool!

  • Is there life after death? There is now!!! This is too cool.

  • Is there life after death? There is now!!! This is too cool.

  • very touching

  • thats a creative idea to help nature!

  • Those people know that the chalk is going to wash off right? Good idea for the reef makers though. Getting people to indirectly pay for conserving and making more coral reefs!

  • If this is the way humans can make another step in the direction of decreasing the mess we have created, then I think this is wonderful.

  • Great, filling the sea with dead people...

  • What's the cost?

  • Comment removed

  • It doesn't matter how they were made. A reef is a reef. They're just making more of them. It's just a tiny step, though. People must worry about manmade pollution, as well.

  • great idea

  • ummm... their placing it where there are no reefs. we killed the real reefs already stupid. why do think we're making artificial ones?

  • So, having got your first argument (these will crush real reefs) shot down, you turn around and, rather than admit it, grasp for another lie.

I wonder what you have against these reefs...

Anyways, you are wrong. These are not lifeless at all. I'm a diver, and my city (Victoria BC) has some of these reef balls sunk offshore from Ogden Point. I can assure you that they are brimming with life, both inside and outside the structure.

Less Japanese cartoons, more outdoors, young one.

  • alright i get it

  • well yea u are right.i seen them b4...at first they look dull like those in the videos...but with times they look really colourful with all the corals and fish living in or on it (i use british english so i spell colourful instead of colorful)

  • Now that's a much better use of dead bodies then wasting space on grave yards.

  • cockmeat sandwiches

  • Not a bad idea really.

  • are the reefs made of a persons ashes?

  • it said they add the ashes to the cement

  • Thats a great idea

  • Cool idea. When I die I might do that.

...souls can get out of water right...right?

    XD

  • Right, soul could go anywhere it wants.

  • That's kind of a cool idea

  • can we make a sandwitch togheter with your mom????? :-)

  • cockmeat sandwiches

  • LOL! Yes.. cockmeat sammies :)

  • Anytime you see some guy in the middle of the night pushing his Buick into a lake, just relax, it's going to end up an artificial reef for fish. Don't call the cops, they'll tow it out and find the body in the trunk, essentially ruining everything.

  • lol random

  • great stuff

  • I am so doing that to be family members. not that i hate them but its better to provide life for animals and way better then having to spend your eternity in soil with a bunch of worms

  • agreed

  • hey buddy ima worm that hurts

  • awesome idea

  • thats an amazing idea

  • that guy shouldn't touch the reef with his bare hand. he obviously doesn't know anything about reefs

  • What a beautiful way to say good-bye.

  • wow, this is a good idea

  • I love the idea of having underwater graveyards....

  • once again national geografic never cease to amaze me, awsome story, i might want to do something like this when i'm gone, just not a ball shape.

  • awesome concept!!!

  • The 'mob' have been putting people in concrete and dropping them into the ocean for years? why not do it legally

  • yah i know maybe even more money for them too..

  • my dad plants these here in new jersey...i saw his videos...its sweet!

  • That's a good idea!

  • We do in new orleans to

  • Now graves aren't useless anymore! They actually do something!

  • That's really cool... that's really cook...

  • What a great idea! Helps those grieving as well as the environment. I think that's what I'd like done with my remains when the time comes.

  • Because then they wouldn't be apart of the reef! The ashes would just float away to other parts of the sea.

  • doine

  • Awesome thing to do.

  • thats awesome :D

  • wow you're cool

  • wow you're jealous. Pwnt.
