The first one wasn't even a proper graph. Time is linear not sporadic and it would have been more meaningful had the two values been plotted against each other rather than on separate graphs.

I know it sound like I'm nitpicking but I'd expect the New Yorker to be slightly cleverer.

That "linear time" critique is without basis because you don't know what the second variable in either graph is. You are quite right however that the proposed relation is not supported by the information presented.
