(if you're still around jedite83) Did you get a chance to see the Phil documentary?
Aside from being an incredible songwriter, he had a wonderful voice. Occasionally indulge myself with scenarios where I could sort of wave a magic wand and bring him back.
@janejetsonbot Arlo Guthrie was duped by the Libertarian line of Ron Paul. Paul has a international policy that liberals and radicals who are against war love. Even I think he is right on. It is easy to see how Guthrie was taken in. The problem is that Ron Paul's social and economic policies are really fucked up and could never sustain a country that would be stable and orderly enough to achieve the pacifist overseas policy. Arghhh, it's just a bit too complicated.
@HerodotustheElder No Arlo wasn't duped. I think he sees it as I do. We need to fix the top by getting out of this fiat monetary system, and change our Foreign Policy, or no one will be able to take care of anything. Don't forget Arlo's Harry Bridges video of a Woody song. Fix the top, then from the grass-roots we will build our own way out...of DC trying to run our lives, when they can't even run their own.
99% of the time a cover isn't better than the orginal - just look at at all the shmucks that do covers of Dylan's songs, but Arlo does a better job than Ochs.
Actually, i beleive arlo did support a republican congressman, Ron Paul.
I think he said somthing along the lines of "there are an awful lot of good democrats in the world but maybe not so many good republicans, lets change that"
I saw Arlo in 1969 in Minneapolis - I was 13 and it was my first concert. Opening act was Linda Ronstadt & the Stone Ponies. Everyone climbed on stage for Alice's Restaurant.
@nick1137 I suppose you knew them both--I did! So, O great judgy dude, please tell me your version's much better! Send me the link! Send me your songbook! I love music by people who mean it! Need a genius in the soundbooth? I'm it, but real expensive these days, & I'd have to charge you double cash in front for being rude to Arlo on the internet! I'm not dissing you--just really saying "horrible" is a thought/word that won't get to music, or anywhere good, not ever, see? I knew you would!

so sad about Arlo going conservative....maybe he always was. Sadly he is no Woody Guthrie. He had nice hair.

@MsSapphire87 Yeah, that's right. It's Arlo's personal effort to save the two-party system.

is it just me or does he (in some parts) sing with the same nasal voice dylan did? not that there is anything with nasal singing - i love it (:
schokaholik 1 year ago
@schokaholik Dylan admired and learned to sing from Woody Guthrie, and Arlo probably held his father in similar respects.
sambowman91 1 year ago
@sambowman91 that sounds plausible :)
schokaholik 1 year ago
@schokaholik Arlo Guthrie's style was most likely inspired by Bob Dylan's; as you hear, he is entirely overdoing it. XD
