@pyhtio I hope I'm that good when I reach 7 years. I've only been playing for about 4 years & I'm not that good, but stuff suddenly starting going uphill. Do you have any tips for technical stuff?
@TheBoaConstrictor95 You need to have patience. Most things you can't learn in one day or even a week. When developing technique, if you feel tension when practicing, you are going too fast, you should slow down and try to stay relaxed. Practice a little every day, even 15 min is better than nothing. Finding a good teacher would also be a good idea! There's something I could think of, hope it helps!
@pyhtio Thank you so much! Unfortunately, I can't find any teachers where I live. I'm 99% self-taught. But thanks for the other advice! I'll definitely keep that in mind.
@TheBoaConstrictor95 I must add, recording your playing is really educating. It can also be depressing sometimes, but it will really help you develop your sound, groove and consistency.
Hey, nice playing. Would you say the SH line from Stagg is similar to Zildjian K cymbals? Or would the Classic Series o Vintage Bronze ones be more like them?
Thanks! Don't expect Stagg SH to sound as good as Zildjian K but if you're on a tight budget, they'll do ok. Actually, I think Classic series could be closer to K. I recommend you try any Stagg cymbal before buying it.
What heads are you using on your toms? They sound EXACTLY what I want mine to sound like, and no matter HOW I tune mine, I can't get that sound I like so much!
Remo Emperor coated top, Ambassador clear bottom. I use no dampening on toms, top heads tuned quite loose and bottom heads a bit higher. Also they sound different on a recording even without EQ, the recorded sound depends a lot on the mics and mic placement. My advice is to experiment (tune the heads up and down randomly :) ) and use dampening only as the last resort.
I only use dampening as a last resort also, but Remo Ebony Pinstripes on the batter and Remo Ambassador clears as the resonant heads just dont give me the sound I want. And I know that recorded drums sound different than they do live, I record drums in my spare time, too.
Pinstripes are very thick heads and they will kill much of the tone. Emperors are a bit thinner and I've found they are the ideal heads for the kind of sound I'm looking for in toms. Low, warm and big with nice attack. (coated for more warmth and clear for more brightness)
The sound is recorded with Rode NT-5 overheads and AKG D112 -bass mic thru a mixer into an mp3 player with recording capability. Video recorded with Canon Powershot S2. Audio and video were then combined with free video software called VirtualDub. No camera can record this good sound I'm afraid. :P
It's improvised, so I wasn't thinking about rudiments when I played it. Anyway, you can hear single strokes, double strokes and five-stroke rolls in there, at least.
On my left side I have a hihat and a crash.. do you mean the one that's close to camera? It's a Stagg SH hihat on a regular cymbal stand. The bottom cymbal is inverted. (logo side up)
The best thing about it is how it looks, that's why I wanted a 24" bass drum! Actually, the only downsides are that smaller kick drums are easier to play and carry around, but the look and sound is well worth that! :)
(I heard from a sound engineer that this one goes 10 Hz lower than most bass drums he had recorded :) )
Man I loved it, i only have one really really minor dig, palms face the sky. I don't know if thats how you've been taught or whatever but that just works for me, you get lots mroe control.
I had to relearn hand technique once and it's painfully slow and hard to unlearn old habits and teach yourself a new technique all over again.. I know it's still not perfect, especially my left hand technique is still far from where I'd like it.
Experiment. If it helps, on this video the bass drum is a Tama Granstar (9-mil birch) 24" with Remo Powerstroke3 batter head and Ambassador resonant. Both tuned pretty loose, minimal dampening. Plastic beaters and a Falam slam patch. AKG D112 positioned at the micing hole facing the beaters.
They work great for me! I've heard from many recording engineers that Octava 012-01 are better for recording drums thou, and they cost the same as NT-5. Haven't tried them out but I would definately like to!
Keller 6-mm maple shell, size 14" x 6,5". I ordered it from STdrums in Germany, they made the bearing edges and snare bed. Steel hoops. I sold it, I noticed I prefer metal snares, especially brass!
Dude your drumming reminds me of mine. I'm not as good as you. But you have the same groove and feeling I seem to play with. I salute you for your skills!
