  • a great song.............................. the way of a "song" bird. . . music. . . can take us to places we never dreamed of.......... (thank you Dixie Chicks). . . . & the only way to reach farther to the "top of the world". . . is to over come our past. . by doing all we can to take as many steps as we can to not repeat the mistakes . . . . that other's or we ourselves have made yesterday in our tomorrow. We can change the world . . one step at a time.

  • This is such a beautiful video, with an incredibly strong message. It makes me sad to see it just because I hate seeing Emily be mean! She seems so sweet. They all do. :)

  • This is a great song, and I can understand why these talented musicians would want to cover it, which they do most successfully; however, I do find fault with the director who appears to have taken some liberties when constructing a narrative "story" to appeal to viewers. Is this story even implied? It's like watching Gone with the Wind and seeing the Wizard of Oz: confusing.

  • The Dixie Chicks are the best...and they were right all along...take that George Bush

  • natalie maines .. makes me speachless

  • Patty Griffin, original writer and performer, FTW

  • The Dixie Chicks they still communists?

  • This video is amazing! What an impact. So poignant! Great music. Great art.

  • @katiebrighton86 Shut yer yapper, faggot!

  • Is it just me, or does the live version sound better?

I've listened to the Dixie Chicks' music since I was about 5, and I practically grew up on the Top of the World Tour CD, and they're still probably one of my favorite bands.

  • This song is so deep to me! I never so the video until now but it was always paiful to hear it before. After seeing this video it was even more ... reminds me of my mother and grandmother. I promissed myself I will never treat my daugther the same way.

  • awww this song is sooo sad it makes me wanna cry everytime i hear this

  • This song, for whatever reason, reminded me of the importance of close friendships. I have no essential relationship with my family (I love them none the less). They say you can pick your friends but I feel that disempowers the nature of friendship. They are to be experienced and sometimes persevered through and If your lucky you'll get to grow old with them and reminisce about your life with. I love my friends so much.

  • this is a really great video.

  • I like this video, yet I can't see to place my finger on it, there is so many people and families I can't keep track of what's going on. I get that the grandfather dies in the middle but can someone explain the rest to me?

  • @RoxieBlonde1617 Read the first top comment. It pretty much sums up the video.

  • @SunnyRays06 I am so thirsty what I would give to tap a chick that was lactating.Say uh...you wouldn't be...umm well ...oh nevermind lol

  • @TrannysoreassRex wtf? lol that was a random comment.

  • @RoxieBlonde1617 it's basically a song about regret. The man, boy, and old man in the chair are one in the same. They didn't receive love from their mom, and in turn, never learned to show love to his daughter and wife. Imagine the song being sang to his daughter and wife by him...from his perspective. It's really, really sad.

  • @1971alicat especially since his grandbaby looks like his mother.

  • this video is so amazing, by the end you just feel speechless

  • The grandfather (main character) dies at 2:03. That's why the couch is empty in the end.

  • Wow this video is amazing.

I also noticed that the little boy was raised only by his mother. Maybe his father left the family? So his mother was probably dealing with a lot of hurt as well.

  • Fantastic video!

  • I think its about not being able to express how we truly feel for fear of being hurt or abandoned again like we were when we were children! So we can't show our love to another person! In this song I think it spells out regret...regret that we have trapped ourselves and prevented us from expressing our true feelings because of past childhood experiences and thus we never truly fulfill our potential and make it to the top of the world as well as the knock on effect it has! True expression is key!

  • absolutely fantastic song and the video's beyond amazing....the concept behind it is so unique and wonderful. I realize this is supposed to be a sad video, and it is....but it's really amazing, too.

  • The boy is not shown love by his brother(Emily), he grows up not knowing how to show love to his daughter(Natalie), she(Natalie) grows up remembering and deciding she was going to be the one to break the cycle and shows her little daughter the love her and her father felt they missed while he regrets not doing so with her and his wife(Martie).

  • @amandacomstock2004 thankyou ! and no i dont hate you haha, yu have the right to think what you want , but yeah i jusd think we should all come here to listen to this meaaan as song and not to just have fights about president bush , and im from NEW ZEALAND GUYS ! haha :L love the dixie chicks <3 they rock (: ( "mean" in new zealand means cool lol )

  • Comment removed

  • Amazing <3

  • so damn beautiful!

  • good effort girls, this version is as good as Patty Griffins origional version, well done....

  • As if I could get anymore depressed. This is a rather sad video. Great song though.

Oh and to berf13, yes that is how it is portrayed. The brown haired woman(Emily) is the mother of the son who in turn becomes the father that does not care for his wife or his daugther (Martie). Then the daughter (Natalie) has a daughter of her own.

  • This video is so powerful, take heed before its to late !

  • amazing song!!!!

  • i love this song

  • The video shows that parents repeat the style of upbringing to their child as they, the parents, were raised in. The cycle doesn't stop unless one person is aware of the cycle to stop the cycle. I am not sure if the father realized the choices he made because the video shows him crying as a baby without being consoled. He simply lived by what he knew. The daughter, Natalie, was astute to differentiate between her mother and father to make better choices for her child.

  • @DaNoMiHoBa This is a very powerful video once you understand it

  • @korkeycat I think I explained it very well and you are right it is extremely powerful!

  • This song is amazing.

  • This makes me weep.

  • IDIOTS, THIS IS A PARODY ABOUT GEORGE W BUSH

  • its a vicious and cruel cycle. im glad natalie stopped it.

  • @crazyfrosty17 Stopped it? LOL. That's like saying Fred Flintstone is a good actor. You DO realize this is just a video, don't you? This isn't real. BTW, WWE is fake, too.

  • @Therealmensa OH really?? thanks for the fun fact! heres one for you: there are other videos on youtube other than Dixie Chicks songs! I KNOW! its shocking! try trolling on some of those, instead of the great Dixie Chicks

  • @crazyfrosty17 You mean Gone Dixie Chicks, don't you? Try getting a grip on reality. More fun facts:These girls haven't won a public voted award since 2003. Natalie got an honorary degree from Berkley School of Music, but it was quietly rescinded when it was found she hadn't attended the one semester required for the award. There is evidence she registered, but none of her attending even one class. They still call her alumna, however. So much for the academic integrity of that school.

  • @Therealmensa Hi Leonid! Is your nutsack still void of man lava? Still neglecting your red-headed sex-starved wife while you type to teens an argument you can't win? Just checking on ya, bra. Peace and shit.

  • ...the language in your post shows what an hateful person you truly are, OH and BTW, the definition of "n****r" is "a person of any race or origin regarded as contemptible, inferior, ignorant, etc." - Soooo, I guess that makes YOU what you are racist about. I wonder how many Hispanic, Black and Native soldiers died to protect the freedoms you now abuse. YOU need to take your antiquated, draconian and misogynistic views of women and other ppl back to the rock you obviously came from!!

  • Comment removed

  • It makes me cry

  • I think the words are the thing...not this video...and Natalie's singing.

Soulful beyond description. Who cares if they aren't ready to make nice? Their music is the epitome of what country music should strive to be.

  • So pretty.... :)

  • This is such an incredible song, the meaning behind it especially. My grandfather used to beat the hell out of my grandmother, my father and all of his siblings, my father was the only kid who picked up on it, he used to come home and beat the shit out of me and my mother. I have scars from it still, and this song is just so beautiful it always makes us feel better if we think about it, always tells me I'm just like him well I have one thing to say. Fuck you dad, I'm breaking the cycle.

  • Comment removed

  • Wowowow, this sure has some beautiful fiddle work in it.

  • I'm crying

  • this is made me cry :( beautiful song, beautiful video

  • this is made me cry :( beautiful song

  • i cry at this song every time, so beautiful. *sniff sniff*

  • This always makes me cry, this song is so powerfull!

  • This is probably one of the best put together song-video combinations ever made. love the Dixie Chicks

  • This video hurts in so many ways.

  • @Treehuggerapryl quite crying

  • @Treehuggerapryl I love you so much ---

  • @anubis755 Der potlinksten gezheffteren op dint daar je nog steeds an DOWte! ZOEK EEN LEVEN!!

  • this makes me tear up.

  • Is this their song, or did they cover this song from Patti Griffen?

  • @emokidslow4u Another cover tune by the DC's.

  • I wish someone had helped my great-grandmother. . . She was widowed in the 40's. She had to raise 5 children alone, destitute. Including my grandfather. He'd call out from his bed at night, "Mommy, I love you. Do you love me?" over and over with no reply. He was distant and cruel to my mother when she was growing up. Broke her wings off. My mother left me when I was a baby. 30 minutes away and never calls. Maybe if someone had helped my great-grandmother my life would have been. . . different.

  • My family portrait set to music its so disturbing to me to see this video yet it comforts me I'm not alone in my pain

  • Ok, so Emily's the bitchy mom of the son

Marty is the mom of little Natalie

And Natalie becomes the little girl.

I think i get it. Good video.

  • Wow this is the cylce with my mom and me, and her and my grandmother. Hopefully I break the disconnection cycle between mother and child with my 3 year old. Great Video...

  • this is a good song i love it

  • Da saddest part for me was from 2:50 to Like 3:20....she just looks so cute and innocent and da dad is like I'm just gonna ignore her just like his mom ignored him :,( so she just looks so sad and disappointed cuz all she wants was for her dad to atleast say he loves her....

  • i love the last part with the violins, it gives me goosebumps

  • i think the mom with the brown hair is the grandma, the young boy turns into the dad of the little blonde girl, the little blonde girl turns into the dixie chick who is taking care of her dad in the end, feeding him food. The music video is about this man who was never shown love as a child so he never showed love himself. Also i think the song is about the man saying he wishes he was different and he wished he known her (his daughter)

  • @danapappa he never loved himself, but he also treated his daughter the same way he was treated. Kind of showing the cycle of abuse continuing passed generations.

  • @danapappa SPOT ON! THATS WHT I THINK TO NEWAYS AND ALSO HE IS WISHING HE COULD OF SHOWN LOVE BUT DIDNT KNOW HOW AS HE WAS NEVER SHOWN HOW :) I LOVE THIS SONG IT GIVES ME GOOSE BUMPS EVERYTIME! IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN HAVE THEM TO LOVE THEM! NOT COS YOU THINK YOU SHOULD HAVE CHILDREN TO FIT INTO THE WHITE PICKET FENCE SCENARIO!

  • @danapappa This video is about neglect and how its carried on through the generations and finally ends with the daughter of the man. She makes a choice not to live that way,and to stop the treatment her father gave her and how her grandmother treated her father thus ended the cycle

  • @danapappa Also, the blonde, long-haired Dixie Chick is his wife.

  • beautiful song strange video

  • this song is absolutely amazing it shows just what my family has gone through

  • the whole time, your kinda just waiting and hoping the dad's mom would give him love.

  • This video breaks my heart.

  • Yeah not bad at all.

  • This is great song and the director of the video has done an amazing job telling the story of the song. I am not sure it's supposed to be exactly certain of who is supposed to be singing the song in this video. I think most of the time directors leave those ends untied so that listeners / watchers can relate in different ways to the song / video. I can say I love this song/ video. Amazing and so dramatic.

  • this video its cool

  • so the male is the video is the same person right, like its showing him as a baby, then as a little boy and how his mom treated him, then how the later treats his wife and little girl like that. and natalie is sapossed to be daughter when she'as older and has her own kid... thats what i'm taking from it anyways,.is that basically what is it?

  • @berf13

  • love 'em. Their songs are so deep. So simple but deep. Love it!

  • I love the Dixie Chicks and thought I'd help viewers out there who don't understand the song so here it is as simple as I can put it:

This song is about abuse being passed down from generation to generation until somebody finally breaks the cycle.

The first two verses of the song come from the view of a parent, and then the last verse ("I wished I'd known you, wished I'da shown you") come from the view of the child wanting to break the cycle.

    very powerful! Amazing artists.

  • @ilovemusic555 Actually, this song diss'd the sisters while trying to elevate Natalie as some kind of better person. In reality, she's an ex bar fly who's daddy set it up for her to be singing with the enormously talented sisters. They may be playing parts in this video, but the real reason she plays the "good" person is to produce a version of her that never existed. Sony is good at that.

  • @Therealmensa does she bug you or somethng?? good lord. i can't go to video to listen to them without you ragging on natalie maines. i'm certainly not going to deprive you of your rights to voice your opinion, but seriously enough is enough.

  • @tranurse your awesome

  • @tranurse Oh, Nat Maines bashed for over 8 years, and to a much larger crowd than will ever show up on these videos. I'm not just voicing an opinion. I am posting the facts that give me an opinion. For example, the Dixie Chicks NEVER offered the Red Cross a million dollar donation. She denied her 2003 comment was a true sentiment repeatedly....until it would serve her better to say she did mean it. Renshaw, Kopple, and Weinstein created an illusion, and I use facts to destroy it.

  • @ilovemusic555 Disagree, I think "I wished... shown you," is being told from the father's POV. In his old age he is realizing that he "broke the wings" and regrets not letting his emotions through and being cold to his family, but it is too late.

I do think it is about the cycle of abuse though, just think those lyrics are more suited to the father in this case.

  • @mczedd1 You Misunderstood and you're wrong. I said "this song is about abuse being passed down from generation to generation until somebody finally breaks the cycle.

The Part where she says "I wished i'd a known you...shown you" is coming from the point of view of the child breaking the cycle. Not from the point of view of the father. The father dies by the second verse IE- "I stayed right there in my chair".

  • The vicious cycle of generations past...#BEMM!!

    Summed up in 6 words!!!

  • @Mantisisland

Okay, I think they are cool for putting out their opinion, im not trying to start any arguments, all im asking is that we wll just stop arguing about all this and just please comment on how beautiful this song is . and how amazing the dixie chicks are . i love them so i come on to youtube to hear them , not to start more disputes .

  • @Nqamoerox accidentally gave a thumbs down. Sorry bout that haha I really love your comment and this song soooo much.

  • @darkmagicianawsome yes i know that . but can we all just listen to this beautiful song ? bush was an egg , i know . even we new zealanders know, but we cant all keep living in the past . thats over now , we have to move on . dont you think . i think this song is great and so are the dixie chicks , isnt that all that matters ?

  • no one sings and plays this better than the writer patty griffin. it's only her and the guitar. dixie chicks took it way over the top of the world.

  • This song makes me so emotional, I cry every time. I think about my father when he came home from a long day of work all he wanted was quiet, all I wanted was his attention.

  • I do not understand

  • @CatieDalleLydon what do you not understand? Maybe I can provide an answer.

  • This song is so emmotional and strangly empowering break the chain of mistakes made by each generation and maybe lives can be made better for our children

  • WONDERFUL SONG

  • This song...I didn't like it as a little kid, mostly because I didn't understand it. but it's soo beautiful

  • i feel the pain of this song.

  • I always loved this song, but i watched the video and it's my childhood. It's so sad a girl needs her dads time and love...i didn't get that. So thank you for this video it helps me realize it wasn't just me. I love you all! Please sing more songs, your my therapy!

  • i never really get emotional about any song. i just listen to them and think ok, thats pretty sad. but this song always seems to make me cry both from the music video and the song itself

  • 2222

    จ๊าบจัง

    นายพรศักดิ์ ณ.โกลก

  • this song is hauntingly beautiful. i love the dixie chicks, usually when an artist or group changes the music they make, it disappoints but not them. absolutely love their old stuff but it's obvious theyve done a lot of growing, as people and as artists

  • @xtina23230 That's definitely true. Although they didn't write this song and it is a cover, I think your comment still applies- it requires new depth to be able to perform a song like this.

  • true americans can talk about anything they want the dixie chicks are americans, so they exercised that right .It was unamerican and disrespectful to the men and women that have fought and died for this country to try to censor them.

  • @brittrobert1 Censored? They said whatever they wanted every day. They became UNPOPULAR. Only POPULAR music gets played on radio. Anyone on radio can get fired. Ask Imus. Ask Ted Nugent. Censored? Get real.

  • Suggestion: People - Sharrapp n' listen to the music - cant belive that there's someone that would rather argue over the internet instead of ignore it, and listen to this way too beautiful song.. :)

  • I dont get why their getting DEATH THREATS FROM CITIZENS IF AMERICA when FAMILY GUY ALWAYS RATS ON BUSH MAYBE AMERICA NEEDS TO GROW SOME BALLS AND LAY OFF THE DIXIE CHICKS IVE MET ALL THREE NATALIE MARTEE AND EMILY AND THEY ARE POLITE A CAN BE!!!!

  • The Video only goes to make the words even more piognant, way to go chicks

  • i am aussie and proud but i also think it is rediculous that you guys would post stuff like this why fight for. these songs are here for us to enjoy if you dont like it turn it off listen to something else. i personally love them and all there muscic without preduduce or narrowminded thoughts.i know you have your opinions but please use them in a way that will get you heard not here i dont wanna read it thanks

  • @MegaBongon I have the same mindset, and I'm afraid I think it's just an Aussie thing. I don't see much fighting like this happening between us Australians!

  • @MsJennieDuke i gather it is an aussie thing oh well still love this band

  • i love this song so much! thx girls..

  • I don;t have words to describe the effect this has on e.

  • she's never gonna fly to the top of the world right now.

  • thus video has a profound effect on me. it is powerful

  • i have loved this song since i was about 10 years old, i could never get tired of it. its lovely.

  • This is an amazing video. Great message. Let go of the way you feel about them and just listen to this great song!!!!

  • amazing new kid star,on you tube. searc: stacy farkas 2010 december

  • The Dixie Chicks are one of the most controversial groups that are controversial for all the right reasons. What a heart-wrenchingly beautiful song... Gorgeous.

  • I cried my eye's out such a powerful song

  • this is such a cool and powerful song and nqamoerox is so right !!!! who cares a bout george bush just listen to the music !!!!!

  • this song is fantastic! I got a tear in my eye.

  • The only religion that uses God's name Jehovah and tells of a resurrection of loved ones in an incoming new world order where sadness is finally gone. Thank you

  • ...and what does ANY of the bullshit arguments going on here have to do with this beautiful song and heartbreaking video? Seriously, I WISH I had the kind of time the haters have to troll EVERY Dixie Chicks video. Get a hobby. Anyhow...beautiful song written by Patty Griffin (her recording is great too) and sung to perfection by the Chicks.

  • @Therealmensa Tool? Wow. Guess you TOLD me. (rolls eyes)

  • watch toby kieth dis!

  • I think my syntax left my meaning a little vague. "Thank God for the Dixies (comma)and thank God for Patty who wrote this Gem"! If you've got good taste, you just need to do 'em justice.

  • I dont completely understand this song.

  • @orangeflippersflip shes singing it in the point of a view of a man

  • Has any one ever commited suicide while listening to this ???bet they have, wtf

  • so so moving.....song and video. best non performance video i have ever seen. almost haunting. really genius!

  • i love this song so so so much. it is so beautiful. people should get over what the dixie chicks have said in the past, they were only telling the truth, and how they felt. no one else has been able to step up and say how they feel, and thats all they were doing..yes i guess it was pretty stupid of them to say what they felt about US actually in the US (unlike P!NK, dear mr president) but they only wanted the word to spread around. all of their songs are beautiful and heartfelt and are truthful.

  • is this right ?

that little boy, then that dad, then the old man, are they all meant to be the same person but at different ages ? and the brown haired lady, she is the mother of this boy. and seeing that she like abuses the kid, thats what he does to his kid. and the daughter of this guy is that main blonde lady. and thats why she is upset looking when she is a mother. and yeah. thats right, aye ?

  • @morgiemooily i think so..

  • @morgiemooily I think that's the gist of it....thats what I got from it.

  • God Bless The Dixies and Patty too for writing this Gem.

  • @terrybeaton They didn't write this, or any song for that matter. If they hadn't received that 6th grammy in 2006, you would never have known the names of the dozen professional lyricists and songwriters that put into song what the DC's wanted to say. The sisters wrote some songs, but before Nat. Natalie Maines never wrote a song in her life.

  • @Therealmensa pretty easy to talk shit on someone doing more than you. jealousy is a bitch.and if you had the chance to be rich and famous in the music industry even tho you had no,(and they do)musical inclination, you would take it. so suck it ;)

  • Im tired of all the negative comments on ALL the dixie chicks songs! everyone needs to relax and enjoy the music :)

  • this song is powerful.. they are a powerful group. i respect every single one of those band members withevery bone in my body. they deserve it.

  • @moonlightradience They deserve scorn, and got exactly that. You must be ignorant to the bone.

  • @Therealmensa i like their music.. i respect their music. they had beautiful songs with powerful meaning. their personal lives and personal buisness are noones but their own. we should hate them for their opinions? how about some empathy. who cares if they dont see things just like you.

you have your opinion. i have mine. they have theres.

shut up and enjoy the music.

  • @moonlightradience Oh! So I should shut up, eh? Typical liberal dickhead. Everyone gets to voice an opinion, unless they disagree with yours. Why don't you shut up, listen to the music, and ignore the comments? I know. it's beyond you and every other liberal assclown.

  • @Therealmensa okay im not looking for a fight. you have no reason to insult me.i didnt insult you. just keep your negitivity to yourself. and you dont know me so shut your mouth. you can say whatever you want about the video but leave me alone. you know nothing about me so dont tell me whats "behond" me.i only responded to your first message because you called me ignorant and that was unnecesary and inapropriate. im aloud to respect them and your aloud to disagree but theres no need to insult me

  • @moonlightradience Hey, typical liberal idiot. why don't you shut YOUR mouth? OH! OH! I'm oppressing you! Of course, when you say it to me, it is totally justified. You're pathetic.
