  • Michael Klinger is a boss.

  • So this is what policy debate is all about... yeah I'm sticking to LD.

  • THIS is why you DON'T let the weaker neg give the 2nr XD

  • if only all of the debaters i faced could speed this clearly...

  • the gayest most pointless thing ive ever seen

  • @oFILTHYo Why?

  • @ChristianTarsney why not? you think theres a point to it?

  • @oFILTHYo ...yes? He's making intelligent, articulate arguments that reflect an impressive depth of understanding on international relations issues. Having complex and challenging debates about those sorts of issues seems to me like it has a point...why doesn't it to you?

Also, even if what he was saying wasn't particularly intelligent, you can't have seen very many gay or pointless things for this to be the one that takes the cake in both categories.

  • @ChristianTarsney i get what youre saying. but why do they have to say it so fast?

  • @oFILTHYo Because competitive debate is built around alternating timed speeches--if the debate is being evaluated based on arguments rather than presentation (which creates a lot of educational value in terms of engendering more rigorous arguments and greater depth of research), then the incentive is always to make more and better-developed arguments in the available speech time. If the judge can't understand it, you don't get credit for the argument...

  • @oFILTHYo ...but it just takes some practice to be able to process and follow this level of speed. It's admittedly a little inaccessible to people who haven't had any exposure to the event, but that doesn't negate its value for the participants. And given that they can understand what's going on, the ability to say more in less time only increases the educational payoff.

  • @ChristianTarsney haha we just had a speech and debate thing in our school today so ppl can understand what they do...i understand it all now

  • @oFILTHYo Haha, cool. :-)

  • Harvard KR...or KO! 12 people couldnt keep up with the flow....

  • Now if only I could spread as well as that! Absolutely amazing!

  • What is the Girl in the Green Writing? Is she talking to the paper? Trying to make the paper understand what the guy is talking about?

  • @drinkmouse its called flowing. they write down all the arguments that the speaker is saying. it takes alot of time practice and skill to be able to efficently flow

  • Is this some kind of sick joke that i'm not a part of? Who are you people?

  • Why is this Guy Talking to me like this? Why is he so Insane? WHY ARE YOU PEOPLE LAUGHING. YOURE ALL CRAZY. WHY IS HE USING A BIN AS A PODIUM WHAT THE HELL!

  • @drinkmouse

He is talking this quick in order to get as much information as possible across within the time limit; as far as the bin goes, if I had to guess I'd say he was in policy debate (policy debaters are (in?)famous for carrying around bins full of evidence and sources, and for their rapid-fire speaking). pangify was correct about the flowing; I hope she's good at that, otherwise she's screwed...

  • Why do your bins always look so abused. Why do you use them as podiums. The bins represent your level of conviction into your craft. I bet you purposefully abuse your bins to intimidate the other team. That's why you use them as makeshift podiums. It's a form of intimidation. You use the bins to psych out your opponent. The more cracks and crazy bumper stickers and tape on them the better.

  • i heard crazy chinese ._.

  • Well, yes, it's a lie. Most of debate is a lie. But it's not about truth at all, it's about arguing for the sake of arguing--argumentation as sport. If it was about finding the "truth" one side would always win (this year neg, last year aff, the year before that aff). And there's no real point in having a debate if the entire RFD is going to be "well, the aff is true".

  • @MrYzzy2012 That's what it all boils down to... the bins. The bins truly represent policy debate.

  • What's a real-life application for speaking this fast? Oh yeah, NOTHING. Stupid. fucking. debate. I would love it if people weren't so idiotic and if it were realistic. I'd like to see you stand in a courtroom and do this. A FEDERAL courtroom! Or even in front of the SCOTUS!! Ha! The justices would tear your ass apart.

  • @GenMussolini so, I definitely thought this too, but then I had a long talk with a guy who won the TOC and the NDT (in essence, a badass) and his argument basically boiled down to "more arguments are good" and "if you can do it fast, you can do it slow". So, even if you would never talk this fast in a courtroom, think about what he's saying--every word is important. If he were in a courtroom, he would slow it down. Duh. There may be no application for speaking this fast but there is application

  • @MrYzzy2012 The application is manipulation. That's a horrible goal. Why not pursue truth? This whole practice is a sham made by insecure people who want to feel important by manipulating others. If you can't prove your point without playing mind games maybe your point is wrong or needs more development. Philosophy doesn't belong anywhere but in the minds of people that died thousands of years ago.

  • @GenMussolini for thinking this fast. If you can think on your feet enough that you can get a non-pre written (because he's just saying what he's thinking here, this isn't written out anywhere) speech out like this, you can easily hop up in a courtroom and make slow, resoned, persuasive arguments.

  • @MrYzzy2012 Would be nice if such argumentation is based on real life instead of absurd logic that means nothing in reality.

  • This guy sounds completely normal compared to some fools.

  • I love debate :)

  • i love this

  • why is there so much hate comments on these videos? its a policy debate round. spreading, gasping, and all that stuff is alll apart of policy.. if it bugs you or u dont like it, then dont watch the video, no ones forcing u. justdont sit and complain about it. enjoy the video for what its worth

  • Pfft, Policy debate. Noobs! HOWEVER, this IS my favorite Policy debate video EVER

    LD FOR LIFE!

  • why people talking about spreading here?

This might be faster than normal conversation but its slow enough for a non-debater to understand if they focus and listen closely.

  • @TesseractDigital LMAO Im just saying spreading is annoying... at times

  • @zoeviz000 Mhm :3 Not a very good one though :P

  • @TesseractDigital Yes I am :3 Not a very good one thoug :P

  • I don't like his gasping :P

It sounds like he's getting whipped by a lash :P annoying

  • @zoeviz000 that's how you train 'em - thus, it becomes compulsive.

  • @zoeviz000 It's called double clutch, and it's the only debaters keep from fainting when speaking at high speeds.

  • @colinrocks636 I know but i don't like it.

My debate partner says if I dont start doing that we are going to lose because I wont get to solvency

  • @zoeviz000 tehee yep its a fun skill though.

I love trolling normal people with it

  • @colinrocks636 teh I just do the mew mew mix song really fast

  • @zoeviz000 are you a debater?

  • @bebepopsr Yes I am

  • @bebepopsr I am :O

  • @bebepopsr but I guess it isnt all that bad :)

  • i don't see why the "beat down" is such a humongous deal. it's a pretty damn good 2AR but it's not god-like. I could have sworn i saw him at alta though.

  • OH SNAP!!! Catalina was better, at least i think that was her name...

  • @werw41 katryna

  • Who is this debater?

  • @TheWelling34 michael klinger, beastliest nigga evuuur

  • "This is what happens when you let the weaker debater give the second negative" lol, and his partner is just waiting for hilarity to ensue. haha

  • american policy ftl. learn how to debate, instead of shouting to race against no one.

love the "policy" tub. you're truly golden.

  • He's not super fast but he's extremely techincal

  • I hate districts where PFD is bigger than policy. How can you beat this?

  • @TheWelling34 Because everyone in your district is fucking stupid.

  • @tigersforlife6767 I never said my district was a big PFD district. Learn to listen, thats what policy debate is about. ;).

  • lmao

  • hahaha "his PhD is in Mathematics, he has no qualifications..."

  • is that good or bad?

  • This 2AR is Beasting.

  • wow, klinger seems much more human on youtube then on tv

i can almost flow what he is saying

  • foolish, manic and ridiculous. *double-gasp*

  • even if he was a shitty signposter. he still had good analysis. i liked it generic shit on malthus though

  • He won the TOC.

  • I think that is at berkley's camp i went to their tourno lol califiornia novices suck

  • its because we have 5 min speechs in the rebutals so we read fast to get in more arguments

  • @soonergaret Nubs don't understand policy dabait

  • @captaincool987 What are Nubs?

  • @soonergaret I know it may seem ridiculous, but this has become the norm. It is done in order to fit more arguments into a limited amount of time. Once you get to the point where you can understand (hear) the args being made, the activity becomes even more educational, because of the fact that you get to discuss a broad range of arguments and points, and respond to many of them using strategic thinking. Also, this guy definitely did not act like he had tourettes. His speaking was crystal clear.

  • @soonergaret the way we do policy debate is in a way strange however it allows you to speak more tolerable when speaking normally this way of debate also allows you to put more arguments on the table which allows you to be more intellegent because you are researching more. also it allows kids to read faster which in the long run will help ACT scores

  • haha classic

  • this got me into policy debate man, bomb- diggity

  • Bahaha, the 2n in this video goes to my school.

  • @joeisnotahoe the weaker debater lol

  • He sucks at signposting, constantly stuttering, he isn't particularly fast, and he's a double gasper...need I say more?

  • At least he minimizes the double-gasp. You're right, though -- he stutters a lot and doesn't signpost very well, which is surprising for Michael Klinger himself at such a slow speed.

  • @Noodletude You need to say a lot more. If you were twice as fast as this and had twice as much time for your 2nr he'd still shit on you. He won the TOC, made it to late out rounds of the NDT and was voted the best debater of the decade by the coaches poll.

  • he's pretty fast, its still understandable

  • he gradually gets slower. I'm an EXTREME novice, and even I can understand him at the end.

  • what is the resource abundance -> war evidence he references... could someone give me a citation???

  • ahh i love the first ten seconds lol

but gosh he really needs to work on the breathing

  • @Smil3yY08

    You're an idiot.

He was in finals at the NDT in 2005.

  • haha. again he could work on the breathing.

  • He's going slow for the novice at the camp.

  • i just got a boner :D

  • haha this is so slow

    yet entertaining

    gotta love policy.

  • @ cacemphaton- Lastly, it is extremely true (at least in LD- wouldn't be surprised if it happens in policy) that on the NOVICE/JV levels debaters just go fast for the hell of it. These debaters are really non-word-economical and say things like "uh" and "like" a lot. When debate gets to higher levels like this, the spread is utilized to make more detailed arguments in less time. Also, the researching and argumentation skills gained from debate are priceless.

  • I love this speech and this guy is a great debator, but this speech is over 6 minutes, the 2 AR is only 5 so there is something wrong with this video

  • It might be 6 minutes because its a demo debate for a camp- usually the demo rounds aren't extremely strict. Thats just my theory, but at the victory briefs institute (high school LD camp) the staff members used as much prep time as they wanted. Or it might be a different speech all together- I do LD so I'm not familiar with the policy times- the argumentation is pretty much the same though.

  • In college Debate, the speeches usually have a minute more time than in High school. He looks old enough to be in college.

  • it was a camp workshop

pretty sure he debate for harvard

  • Yeah I've seen him on the coverage of the NDT.

  • either because its a demo debate or because thats college timing

  • it's 6 minutes because it's a college debate... they go 939393936666

  • This is fucking funny.

  • 1) This is not "spewing" this is "spreading." A spew is a bad spread

    2) This guy has some spectacular weighing analysis, don't say that he is making illegitimate arguments.

    3) This is nowhere close to 400 wpm, maybe 300 at most

    4) Run a speed K in round if you hate it so much.

    5) Speed has no bearing on the quality of arguments. Most good debaters (even HS) can make pretty damn good arguments going at fast speeds, they just make more of them

  • ^^^^^^^^^^^^

    This.

  • speed has crucial bearing on argument presentation and audience appreciation, hence its a detraction and distraction, and all this bluster about its value is childish arrogance. we can all read faster than speak: so, tough guy, why don't you stop trying to lose weight by breathing hard, and print up these amazingly flash args and we'll all sit and read next time? can't u admit that speed speech, spuking, spreedling, whatever- is done for show; a show too embarassing to do anywhere else.

  • Comment removed

  • to cacemphaton: I am a high school policy debater and I would hate to rain on your parade but debaters are impressed by speed because the better debaters do understand what he is saying-it is easy, just listen!- and that means you can fit in more evidence and arguments meaning we can learn more about the topic and different arguments.

Don't insult good debaters because you haven't adjusted to the "evolution" of policy debate

  • I too was a policy debater in high school and am currently debating public debate in college, however, spewing in a debate is lame. The point of debate is to be able to understand and argue not ramble on to see how many arguments you can fit in and see how fast you can go. I think that spewing is part of the reason why colleges and other schools are beginning to leave out policy debate and parliamentary debate and are moving more towards public debate.

  • MrTHEgreatestdebater answered your sorry excuse for an argument

2.colleges aren't dropping policy, policy is the most popular debate in this nation because of it's flexibility and interest. Face it, policy is great

  • What I am saying is that instead of doing the kind of policy debate that is done in high school colleges are more into parli, public debate, etc. I do enjoy debating policy but what i hate is that some people completely focus on how many arguments they can fit into their time. And even though U and I know what they are saying most people dont understand what is being said due to thier speed

  • i can listen to my tape player on hi speed, and learn to follow it, if i have to. why should i put others through it if i WANT them to appreciate my reasoned args?

if u think its cool to deliver points this way, why didn't you reply by leaving all whitespaces out? yousavespaceformoreargumentsthatwaydon'tyou?Howaboutyouturninyourpapersthswaytooonthesamegrounds?hey, youunderstandit, sodotheothers, sowhat'sthebigproblem?I'VEEVOLVED!

  • Dude you can start typing up all your reports without spaces and start a revolution- speaking fast is the norm in debate, using no spaces is not the norm when writing. Its a bad analogy. Also, it's not necessarily done just for show, it is in part, if you can spread well it can be intimidating. But football players learn to tackle each other brutally. None of them do this outside the game- that would be stupid. Debate is like a sport- obviously I wouldn't spread when talking to a normal person

  • just because some people aren't capable of thought quickly enough to follow this (which is actually presented at a pretty low speed) doesn't mean it's not legitimate argument.

also, if you think good arguments can't be presented at this speed "by definition" - you should probably look up the definition of argument... because quality of logic isn't influenced by what speed the text is presented at.

  • Indeed, Ph33rb0t. Not only does his "definition" make me wonder how old his computer is, I would love to see Sir cacemphaton pull out a source for it. Funny, to bring up ad hominem, a mere two words after beginning his rant by calling me "dooosh".

And, might I end by asking who is truly the "indignant moron", or, in /slower/ terms, who posts two consecutive times, with neither argument substancial enough to be logical?

  • it means the argument is lost; it means the verbal speed is the focus, not the arguments- you deceive yourself if you imagine everyone is on the same point as your hyperbabble- they are impaired in their concentration by your antics. If the argument were so great, you would spell it out-so long as you really wanted it evaluated on its own merits; but you don't. you want it evaluated in terms of its speed of delivery, how much was crammed in, etc. R U really not getting this yet, speedo !?!

  • everyone who does policy debate comprehends/understands the speed at which the debate takes place. Unless a debater is still very unexperienced, speed isn't any sort of problem. At the point where everyone involved is on the same level, your talk on "hyperbabble" is pointless. We talk fast to make more arguments, sure, but sometimes the speed helps us make more arguments on one single subject, meaning we learn much more much faster.

The quirks in policy debate are only for those in policy debate

  • Are you even a debater? I am a varsity policy debater in Minnesota and kid I gotta tell you, this is slow. Debaters talk fast not to seem impressive, but so you can answer all of the arguements and say all your arguements. This is more difficult in a rebuttle since it's only five minutes that's why he is "talking fast" according to you. If you don't talk this fast and you can't understand this guy, that means your probably just a novice. Even a novice can comprhend this speech.

  • CHYEA! THE BEATTT DOWN!!

  • zing!

  • You don't get it. These debaters put their opinions and facts into everything they say. The reason they speak fast is to get more arguments in. Arguing slowly simply makes no sense. Especially since they have a limited amount of time. They think and write down everything said here. So yeah.

  • ad hominem from proud speed-debater fanboys? for shame! you mean to tell me the epiphenomenal bleating and sputtering at tachycardic pace was instrumental in delivering points on the basis of their structural value in an argument, and not distracting and embarrassing adenoidal despair? hm. so this explains why the smartest people in the world talk at the fastest possible rates, and get hired to read the fine print on car advertisements. you're right i'm an idiot. &your prof 's a sophist maroon.

  • Well, first off, I just started debate, and even then, I don't plan on participating in this, I'd rather do the slow pace of Congress. So I'm not a fanboy. Also, you talk about these people talking at a needless pace, while I can say at the same time, you seem to be using words that you really don't need to. Then, lol, fine print readers? How bout half of the Senate in America having been part of Debate in High School and College before? Stop assuming random crap, please, lol

  • You are an idiot. Try something called jargon. Debaters know what they are saying, and so does the experienced judge. The reason is not to make us look cool, but it is to get all of the arguments that we need to make in a debate round, and this allows for more educational debates. As a matter of fact, if a debater runs theory that says you shouldn't speak fast, you get voted down.

  • well of course Socrates was banished from Athens because he spoke too slowly, not for the content of his statements. Exactly what kind of jargon do you think will elevate this benighted pantomime of argument to a level of civil address someone besides a comic geek can find enlightening. Please get your professor to codify the best case, then type it up with no spaces and i'll read it as quickly as i can, to understand it better. Capeche?

  • I am not sure if it every occured to you, but high school debate is not the same debate as the normal level of civil address. Sure, we can speak slowly if we want to, but it is just the way that debate is structured that makes a cause for us to have to speak fast. You have probably never been in a debate round, or debated before. What I mean by the jargon that we use, is that it is something that all debaters can understand. Debate is something for the people that understand it.

  • You can bet your ass that some of these debaters in high school are going to be some of the brightest people in the Nation. Most of them turn out to be the ones that attend more prestigous colleges, and if you like to judge before you take the time to listen, then don't even comment on this page. If you can't understand them, then that is your problem, but some of these people debate better than what you will see at the elections. There is so much techinique involved, you wouldn't last.

  • BURN

  • GET YO ASS WOOPED!!! That had to be one of the best 2AR's I've ever heard. Even though I didn't see the rest of the debate I'm pretty sure the aff won

  • I don't get the "university of kentucky" joke...?

  • kind of douchey

  • I was actually here for this! He was going so much faster in person... you can actually see the delay from the crowd haha. I was in the back. The room was soo quiet and Klinger is debating with a camp kid and the person he is debating is way funny.

  • wow. lol. what an intro. XD

  • ROFL!! OUCH!!

talk about tearing a neg team to sht

  • dude,

this isnt pleasing to listen to

  • Comment removed

  • Yes, I realize. I debated in CEDA for two wasted years. Even at that speed, it's a waste. Especially at any higher speeds.

  • double breaths are sooo effing annoying. but this guy is tearing the neg to pieces!

  • that was nice...if that had been a 2AC i could not have flown that lol

  • Puff Power!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • lol careful dude... you're going to piss off all the contemp'ers around here. They might throw a tub at you! lmao...

  • this reminds me of a finals debate round right before quals and the 1AC threw out an AIDS conspiracy case. i have no idea why this reminds me of it beuase these two are completely irrelevant. it might have been the laughter and the oh shit factor brought along with it

  • LOL! What are the odds that I was actually in that round too. Dunn + Partner vs. H2O and all neg did was say how dumb that conspiracy is... 2-1 decision though.

  • really?!? what are the odds? that was such an entertaining round though. and then being the very odd person i am i decided to go and reasearch it. come to find out most of the stuff makes sense. not completely sold on it still thought

  • Spreading is so fun to watch because they are always catching their breath.

  • XD haha, only Klinger can get away with running Chalko impacts and win on that. It comes down to nuclear war<explosion of the friggin' earth.

  • oh brother....

  • Is it ok that I worship this guy? Dude. Really.

  • wow hes so good he's like a model for all my 2ars

  • O.O"

  • Good job! You're super clear.

  • Sam Klinger is amazing

  • ....

    Michael Klinger

  • screw pu fo. it's like policy, but on a lower level than novice. very nice job to the guy in the video though.

  • nice im a policy debater too

  • he sounds like hes rapping....uh uh

  • lol you don't like debate my little acorn friend?

  • dude im in high school debate and ur awesome

dude i wish i was that good

i mean at least im almost that good

    i broke at GDC :)

  • good job bro keep up the work :)

I'm going to be debating for Minnesota state...

    are you new to policy?

  • do you know what policy debate is

if you don't then you need to step out of prep time

  • i love the UT sticker on Klinger's tub.

  • ahaha i saw this 2day in my debate class(:

  • Brav-Freakin-O!

  • not true.

if ur arguement sucks u dont win.

dont talk if you dont know about policy debate

  • its probably either

    A. you dont understand the arguments or

    B. you cant line-by-line or

    C. you are bottom in your circuit

    Go back to pufo loser

  • I like the order of your arguments in this comment

    time allocation is also good

you could expand more on the link because that is shady but that is nothing that would have lost you the comment

you were ahead coming out of the point B actually

    lol

  • You are a retard who oesn't know anything about debate.

you don't deserve to insult the whole activity if you have the brain of a 5 year old

by the way, blippy unwarranted arguments are not voted on, dumbass
