  • R I P Annie Tracey x

    I miss you so much

  • Long Live Tommy Makem!

  • lonepalm58 i must agree with you! i got to see him once when i was about 14 at an irish fest in Beria, Ohio. I'd been hearing him my whole life and now that Im getting older I wish i wouldve paid more attention when I was younger! We miss you Tommy!!

  • Makes this song so much better when your name is Annie <3 :)

  • pcboyIan0612 I must agree with you. i listened to the same as i child. I hope there up there doing what they do best!

  • Childhood memories rekindled .. My parents took me to see Makem and Clancy in the old town hall (now demolished) in Granard, Co. Longford when I was a child... (A Wee while ago :-) ).

I was inspired that evening to learn music and repeat the magic of their performanance. Even as a 10 yr old child, the magic of Gentle Annie, Kagan and the Wind literally swept me away. To Liam and Tommy ... I have no doubt that you are entertaining the heavens... Thank you

  • Tommy Makem's voice became more beautiful as he aged. So much depth and presence and dignity. The world of music simply has an empty place that can't be filled by any one else. His command of music, words, poetry and emotion was remarkable. His artistry lives on.

  • Why can Tommy Makem recite two pages of poetry word for word, from memory, but Christina Aguliera can't remember the words to our national anthem?

What a craftsman of music and words was Tommy Makem. His beautiful voice and heart live on, although his body passed away. May God look after him always.

  • Another great one from Tommy R.I.P

  • This man was a gift from God. When life gets hectic, I can watch/listen to Tommy and my soul is soothed.

  • All I see & hear, is a great artist, and the treasures he left for us all.. I'm a bit jealous, that I couldn't said it.. A great and friendly gentleman.. At the 'Irish Pavillian' in New York, he sat with my wife and I.. A real human being..

  • RIP Tommy and thank you for leaving behind a treasure of GREAT music and GOOD feelings. Love your music Tommy and always will! Mark

  • Love you always Tommy Makem, we lost so much when you died

  • Don't get carried away guys!!! There are far better offerings of this than Tommy's and as he would say himself " I play fairly well and diddle a bit, but jaysus, I'm NOT a singer, now Paddy Reilly is a singer and Luke Kelly is a singer, but me? I'm a poet, born and bred!!!"

    @euph0ny

What does "don't get carried away guys" mean anyway? A song is personal to a person much the same way a favorite book or poem may be. Who are you to judge what is "far better" for people or not? There are a lot of artists out there who can't sing, Neil Young comes to mind, but can't someone think he is their best without being told there is better out there?

  • @mark2822

Don't shoot the messenger, I'm only quoting the great man himself and you're quite right everyone IS entitled to their own opinion.

  • @euph0ny

The quote is in all likelihood his but the fist sentence and a half was yours, not his. But to the point, let people enjoy what they enjoy. For example you could fancy yourself as hideous but others may see you as handsome or beautiful, whichever the case may be. So a better offering is in the eye of the individual wouldn't you agree? And yes everyone IS entitled to their opinion

  • Amazing. "Like the morning dew before the rising sun...When your eyes tell me you love me...Then my soul is filled with wonder...And my love for you will live when life is done." Such beautiful words.

  • This is beautiful, God this guy was great!

  • The late great Tommy Makem with a fine explanatory introduction to his song "Gentle Annie".

  • Miss you Tommy !

  • Wonderful both the poem and the song..... made me have a weep....

  • Katie is yours mums name annie by any chance ?? lol yea i love this song as well, love the peom as well.

  • one of my favourite songs in the world...my mum has sung this song for me since i was little

  • What is the name of this poem?

  • Raglan road or The dawning of the day.

  • Raglan Road

  • This Song makes me tear up. And i am not the type who cry's a lot. Very beautiful. RIP

  • Thank God for Tommy Makem and his music. Thank God for love like the kind he and his lovely Mary had to inspire this song. And may God grant that all of us find love like that one day.

  • Lawn Ave., Rotterdam NY WMHT studios in the late 90's

  • Lawn Ave., Rotterdam NY WMHT studios late 90's

  • I may be a Scot, but this Irishman is great. A beautiful voice.

  • Yes my mentor and friend tommy is the best irish singer there ever has been and ever will be.

  • you mean my best friend. Yes he is very good. I learned all i know from him.

  • Lovely!

  • Makem misquoted the poem but I think I like his version better

  • agreed

  • I am very pleased to say that i was born less that one mile from Tommy. It is only now that i feel very proud that i knew him. His mother is a Legand

  • The tonality, poetry and emotion in this man's voice made me stop in my tracks when I was a child and still does today. Authentic emotion, true poetry and a heavenly voice never goes out of fashion. 'Old ghosts meet' when we listen to someone like Tommy Makem.

  • why bother watching then jesse ????

  • Go back to bed. You must be on DRUGS

  • quite plainly, u r not a musician..that sux 4 u

  • His love for Mary comes so clearly through this song. If all men could share this kind of a love with their wives divorce would cease to exist. A true poet and one of the last great gentlemen. He is greatly missed.

  • That song gets me every time!

Lucky enough to have seen Tommy play

several times..sadly missed. We may have

great singers, but we will never have

better. God look after you Tommy Makem.

  • He loved Annie Not Mary. Go to Bed

  • it was reely good.

This is my daughter who is 9 and her name is Annie

  • Tommy, it's been 16 months since your passing. Every time I hear you sing, or see a video, it's as if you're with us once again, and I'm reminded afresh of your lyrical and musical genius, and just a little of how sadder and diminished the world is without you in it. I miss you, my friend. ~Eammon

  • @lonepalm58 He was the best!

  • "When your eyes tell me you love me,

my soul is filled with wonder."

No one could say it better and no one could sing it better. Singers who love what they do make the best entertainers no matter what the style. Tommy is the best.

  • He sure is the best.

  • @stillirish - I very much agree. when an entertainer loves what they do, they are able to make you feel what they feel when they perform.

  • I love this song.

  • meg j is the best person ever and i love her like tommy loved his wife mary who is annie in this song

  • First time I've ever heard this song...it is so beautiful and haunting.

  • The world lost a truly special musician, poet, and friend when Tommy Makem died. There will always be an empty place here on Earth that no one else will fill. God gave him a special voice and a special gift. Thank you for the music and the words, Tommy. Go in Peace.

    Gary Silber

  • Yes it was for his dear wife Mary. Tommy had used the name Mary for so many songs that he felt he needed to change it up a bit. But Mary new this was her song.

    Mary was a great lady.

  • Yeah that's what he said in his documentary.

  • has his documentary been released yet?

  • yeah i got the first part uploaded and 2nd part is uploading now

  • This was written about Mary right?

  • This is especially beautiful. When and where was this performance? I saw him a while ago in Portsmouth NH. RIP oh beautiful person. We miss you Tommy but your sons will work to carry on your music.

  • I've always loved Tommy's voice--he didn't even have to sing, just the way he spoke! He is a treasure all right! We'll always have his music, and his boys will carry on with their music.

  • Lee Patterson (Australia) So saddened to hear of the passing of Tommy Makem. Thank you for the viedeos. They are wonderful. R.I.P

  • thanks a million for this fantastic memory of one of our legends, nobody will ever sing this song like tommy,

  • Luke Kelly, Tommy Makem; what a great Irish band they have in heaven. Thanks for the tunes we will never forget.

  • He was a revolutionary, a crusader for human rights, and a great musician. He will always be one of my heroes.

  • Tommy Makem will be greatley missed. He was a true patriot who spread his love Ireland throughout the "New World" with his songs and poetry.

When last I heard him on the radio, he was castigating the radio producers of Ireland for the shameful way that they were obstucting the playing of Ballads and traditional music on the national airways. Fair play to you Tommy, they wouldn't have an original thought amongst them.

  • Tommy Makem RIP and never forget Red Is The Rose

  • Tommy Makem's funeral mass is planned for 11 a.m. next Thursday at

St. Mary Church, where he was a communicant, in Dover NH, the town

where he lived for decades and where he was a beloved neighbor.

  • Thanks TommyPM for making this available. Tommy Makem was one special soul. Ar deis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.

Hey, if you run into Luke Kelly in Heaven, would you look down on us all and sing us one more?

  • Slan

  • What a talent. Thanks for posting this.

  • Oíche mhaith, codladh sámh Tommy.

  • You will be missed Tommy. R.I.P.
