Second, the Houston light rail has its own set of signals that it follows, as seen briefly at 0:19 with the okay to proceed "vertical bar"; this train does not typically follow the vehicular red lights at intersections. The bus driver involved in the accident was at fault for running a red light, a massive error on their part since all 3 directions were red.

@gaylearnr0:44, you can just barely see the right side of the light facing the bus. Lights there are on their side, red on left, green on right. It stops before it shows the actual red light but it does show clearly, the right (green) light is not on so the red light has to be lit.

@esto94 to be clear, the lights are designed to cycle in a way that the rail should pass across them when they are red. in situations where it passes through and that's not possible, all lights in the intersection are red. that is what is happening here. the bus driver IS running a light that abruptly changed to red when the rail was passing by it, which sucks, but that's what's happening. it's a mix of inattention and an extremely abrupt change that happens with the lights as the rail passes.

@sideslide23 I have a friend whom is a driver of the METRORail and I was told by him that the trains have their own lights and don't follow the car traffic lights. So when a train approaches the intersection, all car traffic lights are red and the train is given the right of way to pass. So the bus really did run the red light while the train lights were good and therefore causing the wreck.
it looks like the train operator was at fault because you can see the red light for normal traffic, but there isnt any footage of the other side of the train showing the trains control signal. The control signals are placed near a station if there's a need for it, but most times they're located at intersections.
to those claiming the train ran the red, the stoplight only applies to automobile traffic, the rail system gets the right-of-way and has a signaling system of its own, if you look very closely at the trainside cam as it passes the station, the light near the end of the platform is the rail signal, which was in the high green position, giving the train the all clear, plus, trains take time and distance to stop, even if the train tried to stop for the road signal, they still would have crashed

So If the bus driver was at fault for running a red light, the light rail train in the video also shows that it had a red light as well. The train didnt seem to be slowing down. It looks like the trolley also ran a red light. You can clearly see in the moment of impact that the trolleys traffic signal was also red.

@esto94 to be clear, the lights are designed to cycle in a way that the rail should pass across them when they are red. in situations where it passes through and that's not possible, all lights in the intersection are red. that is what is happening here. the bus driver IS running a light that abruptly changed to red when the rail was passing by it, which sucks, but that's what's happening. it's a mix of inattention and an extremely abrupt change that happens with the lights as the rail passes.

Wow.... looks like most of these people here don't drive where light rail travels in their roads. When a train is going through a intersection like that all of the traffic light are red. Which means all traffic comes to a stop except for the train. Investigators aren't stupid, they know what they are doing and cited the bus driver is at fault.

@sideslide23 I have a friend whom is a driver of the METRORail and I was told by him that the trains have their own lights and don't follow the car traffic lights. So when a train approaches the intersection, all car traffic lights are red and the train is given the right of way to pass. So the bus really did run the red light while the train lights were good and therefore causing the wreck.

it looks like the train operator was at fault because you can see the red light for normal traffic, but there isnt any footage of the other side of the train showing the trains control signal. The control signals are placed near a station if there's a need for it, but most times they're located at intersections.

to those claiming the train ran the red, the stoplight only applies to automobile traffic, the rail system gets the right-of-way and has a signaling system of its own, if you look very closely at the trainside cam as it passes the station, the light near the end of the platform is the rail signal, which was in the high green position, giving the train the all clear, plus, trains take time and distance to stop, even if the train tried to stop for the road signal, they still would have crashed

Wow, it still does not sound safe, though. I hope it does not happen here, our new system has stations in the middle of streets with no signals, it crosses one bulevard at a freeway interchange with little or no signal system other than a blinking sign and the train's bell...

@garygee34 They do have their own signals but trains do not stop at red lights if was like that then there wouldn't really be a need to ride Metro Rail because it would be like riding a metro bus due to the fact that it would stop at every red light like a metro bus and plus travel time would be really slow. The bus Driver is at fault for not listening to the train signals and even if the light was red metro rail keeps moving that red light you saw applied to the cars not the train.

i thought CDL license protocol requires that anyone driving a passenger bus must stop and check before passing over a railroad crossing...? same goes for 18-wheelers that might be transporting say gasoline or a toxic chemical. it's to prevent accidents (and the potential for high fatalitys) like this why the rule came into being. i see school buses with kids stopping at railroads as a matter of course every morning. the burden of safe passage ultimately rested with the bus operator.

Even if the red light on the street facing the train was red only for cars, that means the direction the bus was going the light would be green, why is it saying he ran a red light for one...for two, they also say the train was in the intersection when the bus went, the bus was clearly in the intersection before the train, and made it halfway across before the train hit. So If the bus driver was at fault for running a red light, the light rail train in the video also shows that it had a red light as well. The train didnt seem to be slowing down. It looks like the trolley also ran a red light. You can clearly see in the moment of impact that the trolleys traffic signal was also red.
