if he play like this now with such a strong backhand...djoko or nadal no chance getting closer to him. Now everyone attacking to his backhand and for some reason it is not strong as it used to be. Federer is not 100% at the moment. But he can get through to finals and semis. But before he retire he is gonna kick all those arses again.
@ottackon noo actually these r probably da only gud backhands federer has hit in his career . dats y hes always losing to nadal cuz of the weak backhand and there are alot of pros who have a better backhand den him and he has not too much of a backhand and a great forehand so hes not perfect u got datt?
Haha, at 2:06 Blake volleys, and Roger comes up to the net on his backhand side. Right before Federer hits the ball, he just stands there and he's like "you know what? fck this.." I don't blame him. I would've just ran LOL
His backhand has remained his weakness over the years. But when you look at this performance, you see that in this match, he had absolutely no weaknesses and that's why he was totally unbeatable. If he was so strong on his backhand with every match against nadal like he was yesterday in the masters' finals, nadal wouldn't find a way to win against roger. When you look at nadal's shots, about 80 percent are on roger's backhand.
roger will destroy you if you give his backhand side a flat shot, and we could see that blake's shots are perfect for roger to counter. so much for james blake. but the reason why nadal dominates roger is because of the topsin that nadal produces, it just bounces too high(from nadal's crosscourt forehand) and roger can't make a backhand winner with those kinds of shots, let alone return perfectly.
@iban1228 exactly. if nadal was a right handed player, he'd have no hope. it's only cause his forehand goes cross court to fed's backhand. courts these days have slowed down, even at wimbledon, which suits nadal and goes against fed. everyone is against federer.
@sultanabran1 And if I have understood correctly, also the balls have been made slower over the years to make the rallies longer. Which has also helped these "robotic baseliners" such as Murray and Djokovic to emerge. Good players, but hardly entertaining. You have to love Fed for his imagination and variety, even if he's losing too many finals these days, but he is always amazing to watch, because you never know what crazy shot he will hit next. With others, you just don't get that feeling.
I have seen it live; crazy backhands he hit there, never seen him playing that many insanely backhands in a single match before and after this match...
blake seemed to really favor standing (from his point of view) on the left half, almost to much confidence in his forehand? so after a couple shots federer would rip one down the line and there was nothing he could do cause he was to far cause he just stayed there and didnt get more in the middle
Yes this was an incredible backhand exhibition, however blake also has a decent backhand. it is nothing compared to federer's. The only reason federer's backhand looks so good in this video is because blake "refused to recover from his shots." if you watch the video again look at what blake does after each shot, he just stands there, waiting for federer to hit another backhand. federer's backhand is amazing though, it's just that I feel that this video doesn't capture its full potential.
Roger federer wasnt playing amazing blake was playing terrible and Federer took advantage, Blakes movements terrible, anticipation to the wrong corners and Hitting everything to Federers backhand(obviously anit working), Plus watch how often blake is caught in no man land cause he hits it to Federer and expects to come in off a shot which anyone could deal with. Worst match ive seen blake play tbh no concentration or footwork
@on9hockeu I don't think that's true. In the off chance that Fed does play his best against Nadal you will see a Fed victory IMHO. The nature of the match-up means that Fed is usually incapable of playing his best against Rafa. It's an uphill battle for Fed both technically and tactically.
Plus, Safin took him out that one Aus Open when Fed was playing at full. Gonzalez too on one occasion at TMC 07.
i think blake wasnt thinking very much because roger was very predictable in this match but blake fell for it every time for his back hands near the ally
What can you do? When Federer has what may be one of the greatest forehands ever, and then he's ripping backhands like these, you might as well just shake hands immediately.
I wish Federer could hit more top spin backhands cleanly like this against Nadal but Nadal's super top spin ball to Federer's backhand really breaks down his technique for trying to hit top spin off the backhand side consistently =(.
Just a random thought. But seriously, those backhands were ridiculous! =D
