Please pat attention to ben smith's skates, legs, and direction. He didn't "deke into" the hit. He never even pulled off the toe drag. He put his stick/puck to the right side of his body but he didn't drastically move before the hit (the first replay is the best angle). I'm not saying brendan meant it, but it was clearly unavoidable. If this was a non detroit player or someone like pat kaleta, NHLArchive would be going off about how dirty this hit is.

pretty sure the way the nhl works now, any hits on lindros would have been penalties...keep your head up and this wouldnt happen.

@goldiggah15 I get what you're trying to say. Even if he was dangling, there was no need to cut across and hit his head of all places. He may not have targeted the head.. but the point of contact was the head.. there's no denying that.

I am all for hits in Hockey, this was just a bad decision by Brendan. He could have played that out so many other ways. If he slowed down and got in front of him he could have hit Ben, blocked the shot, tripped him, draw a 2min penalty whatever but trying to make a flyby hit is just too risky these days. He deserves whatever suspension Shanahan gives him

so if a guy does a toe drag and another guy is coming in for a hit the hitter is at fault??? he didn't target the head, the toe drag put his head in a bad position. no suspension.

I just don't get it. If Smith just continued skating tower the goalie, the Wings Smith would've delivered a clean hit. At the last second, BlackHawk Smith pulls a move and basically sticks his head out. He needs to be more aware of the players around him. It's unfortunate, but how can you say that was a dirty hit?

@ADeafBoy07 So you're saying that if a guy has the puck, he should just skate in a straight line, not do anything to try to score, and allow the defenseman to break up the play? It was absolutely a dirty hit. Brendan Smith's body during the hit was moving upward, and he also threw an elbow in the process

@letmepointout simple. its a headshot (if the principle point of contact is the head that is it, its illegal). Rules have changed in the past couple months but for what its worth, it was east west as well.

I'm a wings fan but this is an easy call.
