my dad had an 03 ford f150, one night i was going down a hill towards my house and i was going about 65mph and i ran over a few pot holes and the whole truck started to shake mad crazy and i ended up rolling it at the bottom of the hill and off the bridge into the middle of the 4.5ft deep pond/creek thing. turns out that there was something wrong with the stability control. i got stuck inside it & waited for about 3-4 hours for someone to notice a truck on its side sticking out of the water lol
@TheImpactation no there was nothing wrong with the stability control there was something wrong with a driver taking a full size pickup down a hill through potholes at 65 mph.
@TheImpactation You do realize that stability control wasen't offered on the Ford F150 untill 2009, right? Its 2003+ Expeditions that featured stability control.
I don't mean to single anyone out, or sound bigoted or anything. But it seems that the people who are always involved in these kinds of near accidents and crazy driving are of one particular demographic. I'm sure you've all noticed it too, but it's those people that always put big bars on the front and back of their vehicles. I haven't found any correlation yet, but something tells me those are our bad drivers.
hmm seeing that the driving scenario must have been trying to avoid a space shuttle parked across a road that has 15 lanes, then the person doing so would definitely roll. but since no road is that wide, swerving 30 feet to the left will get you into a head on collision and rolling would be the last of your worries
ESC is a good technology but because of it people will drive more recklessly. ESC can't magically make your wheels grip pavement if its icy. 95% of rollovers are tripped meaning a car rolls over because it hits a curb, or flips over because it hits gravel. I have ESC in one of my cars and I have never had it come on in the past three years i've owned it, cause I know how to drive.

Plus it was a beast when we took it off-roading. That's one thing i do like about foreign suvs is that they have great off-road capability.

ESP also provides an opportunity for manufacturers to make poor handling cars. They just add non-switchable ESP so that the electronic aids will give the impression that the car will handle well. God save the driver should the ESP fail.
The system is set up to display a light on the dash if the system fails, just like ABS. And all manufacturers put a statement on a warning sticker that says "This vehicle equipped with stability control that attempts to maintain control of the vehicle in case of a skid or rollover. However it cannot overcome the laws of physics. Practice safe driving maneuvers at all times."
And parents carry their children in these vehicles. Suvs are very dangerous as evident by this video but misguided morons think that they are safe as houses. A passenger car would simply slide out if anything.
@Memphis35 that only happens when you try to do this, but if you know how to drive this will never happen =] i have 2005 gmc yukon, and it's great, i can drift with it ;p
This was a demonstration of what can happen when a vehicle with a HIGH CENTER OF GRAVITY. PERIOD. Forget about the stability control. Stop picking on SUV's, I don't drive one but I drive a truck, the same platform.
I wouldn't buy a car without it. Rather be in control than skid out of control with a car without ESC. However, some people I guess are "special" and don't apply to the laws of physics... and don't need ESC apparently.

No, some people just are better drivers and don't rely on all these gizmos to save their ass in a crash avoidance. The people will all the safety gear loaded into their cars are usually crap drivers. They probably tailgate thinking the ABS will save them or chat away on their cell phone thinking the ESP will save them if they have to swerve suddenly because they weren't concentrating on the road. Safety systems = poor drivers.
Memphis, yes, it will make them poorer drivers, but those "crap drivers" are more likely to survive based on statistics. It seems to promote riskier driving while being safer. I think that's why more delivery trucks are becoming Dodge Sprinters (with ESP), while moving away from the Ford and GM vans, that don't have ESP.
You have to be out of control for ESP to be in control. Here's my advice, learn how to drive, be alert and you won't need ESP. We have done without it for many years.
Great advice but why don't you try to convince NHTSA? Here's my advice: learn how to drive, be alert, and don't take ESP forgranted. If this is done seriously, it should decrease accidents even more than just learning how to drive and being alert.
Here's another thing, too. We're living in a culture where "we don't have time" so I'd rather have them use it because it'll prevent them from skidding and cause an accident. As I said before, ESP is designed to be capable of riskier safer driving. I don't think you'll be convinced so get a car without one.
Gents, I think what JFC (man, what a username) is referring to is possibly misplaced confidence in these devices. There is no free lunch when you take away a good amount of what the driver can put into the system. But I digress...I agree more that motocross70 needs more people on the road not w/ ESP (or whatever it's called), but more drivers w/ brains. I've worked a safety job for the DoD, and I've lost count of the # of times 4WPOV's and 2WPOV's have met with less than satisfactory contact.
JFC, you sound more "anti-American-styled-SUV" than anything, but Citroen now makes an SUV...w/ that variable height the U.S. makers are considering, if that's what you meant. In 2WD, it's low, like a car. Engage 4WD, and you get the traction; lock it in, and you get a nearly half-foot increase in gnd clearance. In short, you only get the "bad" high CG only when you are already driving slowly in poor road conditions (or "lack of road" conditions!).
Americans are stupid. They buy vehicles with shitty static and dynamic stability, then demand the manufacturers add on electronic fixes to justify their purchase. Gotta love it. Just keep paying more money, we'll take it.
JELH- I agree. Explorer 4x4 is obviously ignorant in more than one area, ESP and homosexuals. He's obviously not thinking because he states that people have been fine without ESP. Well if that's true then I ask him this, have people been fine without other safety features such as ABS, Traction control, air bags, safety belts?
you've obviously never fishtailed a car before. I did it once and I've never been so scared in my entire life. After seeing how big of a difference stability control can make, I've decided it's a feature I don't want to live not having in my car. My new car has it and I'm glad. It's already saved me from one accident, too.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I have been in, and seen, more wrecks and near wrecks then (probably) your entire family. We have never, ever needed ESP or other useless toys. People managed just fine without them before the 1990's. And if you don't want to roll over, stop buying fucking yachts (SUV's)
i have 2 second with that! its almost like vehicle companys are promoting bad driving habits with that system! if u have it then great, but dont substitute it for poor judgment!
It works for idiots who don't have a good visual scan, but it made primarily for use on dry, hard surfaced roads. It is not evaluated, tested or developed for that day you drop two wheels off the shoulder.
I think you need to do more research. ESP is also designed for wet/icy roads and actually it will help you get back on the road when you "drop two wheels off the shoulder" as you put it. ESP is not always going to save you, but it does help give the driver control in situations where the vehicle otherwise would lose control without it.
Nope, it isn't. Data scatter ends up being huge, you run into "crosstalk" between data into ABS processor, dwell time for suspension deflection and ABS pulse events (rep freq) approaching a constructive harmonic point (bad for suspension with springs)... integrate ESC, & simple things like changing tire/wheel weight affect its efficiency. Simple answer to this: lower CG, increase track, stiffen springs, change jounce and rebound rates for damping. (oh, then it wouldn't be an SUV)
Yeah I think you said it. It wouldn't be a SUV with all those changes you listed. I still don't think you really know what you're talking about with today's ESP on vehicles. ESP works for both cars and SUVs and I think again you need to do more research. And all the techno babble isn't going to make you right. You probably read that somewhere from an unreliable source no doubt.
No, I'm a software engineer. You wouldn't believe what mechanical engineers come up with to make these things not roll over. You sometimes end up with 4 to 10-d matrices (I knew that 4th-year calculus would come into use some day) to map the inputs the CAR has to do to keep itself upright in spite of the driver!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Just when we think we've got the vehicle to behave itself, you enable the ABS (only test and eval one variable at a time, if you can), and it's okay until the driver applies the brakes....you sometimes end up with ABS and ESC "fighting" what should be the same perturbation... If vehicles used active suspension (like Citroen does)I wouldn't be a slave to the Mech E's.
Make sure that the variables have been entered into the vehicles computer so that when the y-axis is off your car won't have the suspension problem or "chit chat" and the matrices have to be turned off so that the driver can drink his cappuccino!!! Or you can just drive your Citroen!!!
Hahaha! Hilarious dainger15!!! Bottom line is that ESP/ESC or ABS or whatever safety system is put into a car is there to help the driver in moderate to extreme situations compared to vehicles without them. I'll just leave it at that.
He is hilarious. He thinks that the toughest engineering challenges we face are SUV stability targets. The toughest challenges we face are keeping the stylists and marketing from getting corporate to constantly take their side and sell that "cushy, soft ride" that "American car buyers crave" (that's a direct quote from someone in our company). It's sickening. We use electronic band aids to fix deficient mechanical design. Form is supposed to follow function.
You end up with a vehicle that can't turn well in an emergency situation (at least dainger15 will be upright when he crashes into what he was trying to avoid in the first place....gotta love ESP, LOL...you're soooo safe with that beautiful piece of kluge...NOT. We're just now trying to fight our way out of a lawsuit with ESP awarded partial fault in the accident settlement.)
Wouldn't it be better to hit the object trying to be "avoided" while the car is upright rather than the car flipping over and over? (Considering that the object is unavoidable by either a car or SUV) I think so. What do you mean that the car can't turn very well? Do you even know what you're saying? ESP will help a car stay on the road in a turn that's what is for!!! And about the lawsuit... please... people sue everything and anything these days.
JangoFettaCheeze, I think you need to do a search on youtube with the tag words "bosch" and "ESP" then watch thoose videos and then you will see what dainger15 is talking about.
dainger15, a little designed-in understeer is a GOOD thing in an SUV, whether we achieve it electronically or mechanically. BTW, I'm a truck owner, too (it's a real truck). Also, the object this guy hit was a vertical concrete overpass abutment, offset collision, driver's side. Tragedy is, w/o ESC he would've sideswiped it and stayed upright. Then again, we can't model all scenarios when we dumb down suspension reactivity to keep a tall CG vehicle upright.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
...and (LOL), you won't find me driving a Citroen unless it's a 1973 US-spec SM w/ the Maserati Merak V-6...but we like the way they think (vary height to suit). It's in the works w/ us Big 3 (well, our software-e group is contracted, non-UAW), something simpler than what's on the Cayenne/Touareg.
Wow, who's has ever heard of Citroen before you came along. Not many people I can tell you that! (LOL) Who are you anyways, the anti ESC/ESP organization? And NO I don't need you to answer that. (It was a joke)
When did I say: "that the toughest engineering challenges we face are SUV stability targets"? I want to make it clear; SUVs are here for now and will be for at least several more years. Nothing, not even ESP, Anti-Roll Mitigation, or other Traction Control technologies are going to equal the stability OR agility of a CAR. Cars do benefit, if not more than SUVs, from Electronic Stability Programs because it helps them stay on the road rather than going off because of over steer/under steer.
Explorer4x4 go roll your SUV and then tell me you still don't think ESP is something you would like to have on your car. Oh wait; you probably would say something like that after you roll your car because you are that ignorant.
haha, i tested a X3 (ESP OFF) suv and he is 10x more stabel than my vw golf4 when changing fast from left to right. (ESP OFF) this is no suv, but steel on wheels.

It is only for this particular test to avoid rollover. It will not be attached to the SUV when driving in public road.

Do you really mean that?

this should be why not to buy an SUV

ESP also provides an opportunity for manufacturers to make poor handling cars. They just add non-switchable ESP so that the electronic aids will give the impression that the car will handle well. God save the driver should the ESP fail.
Memphis35 4 years ago
The system is set up to display a light on the dash if the system fails, just like ABS. And all manufacturers put a statement on a warning sticker that says "This vehicle equipped with stability control that attempts to maintain control of the vehicle in case of a skid or rollover. However it cannot overcome the laws of physics. Practice safe driving maneuvers at all times."
deepthoughtsofdeath 2 years ago
lol they should install ones that pop out like that so when the thing rolls over, they pop out and save the day haha

And parents carry their children in these vehicles. Suvs are very dangerous as evident by this video but misguided morons think that they are safe as houses. A passenger car would simply slide out if anything.
Memphis35 4 years ago
suvs can only be as dangeruois as the people driving them
rangerover06sc 3 years ago 4
true, and alot of morons drive them.

My 06 Suzuki GranD Vitara is without ESP and i love my car, just adjust the speed and the car wold not roll over!:)
Dumbass drivers whit too much speed in to the curves, that whats goes wrong!

This was a demonstration of what can happen when a vehicle with a HIGH CENTER OF GRAVITY. PERIOD. Forget about the stability control. Stop picking on SUV's, I don't drive one but I drive a truck, the same platform.

Truck and SUV. Same shit.

Lets see who would rather buy a car/SUV without ESC??? Anyone... anyone...?
motocross70 4 years ago 6

Memphis35 4 years ago
Memphis, yes, it will make them poorer drivers, but those "crap drivers" are more likely to survive based on statistics. It seems to promote riskier driving while being safer. I think that's why more delivery trucks are becoming Dodge Sprinters (with ESP), while moving away from the Ford and GM vans, that don't have ESP.

Um, so you're agreeing with me then. Safety systems equals poor drivers.
Memphis35 4 years ago
You have to be out of control for ESP to be in control. Here's my advice, learn how to drive, be alert and you won't need ESP. We have done without it for many years.
Memphis35 4 years ago
Great advice but why don't you try to convince NHTSA? Here's my advice: learn how to drive, be alert, and don't take ESP forgranted. If this is done seriously, it should decrease accidents even more than just learning how to drive and being alert.
unknownunknowns 4 years ago 4
Here's another thing, too. We're living in a culture where "we don't have time" so I'd rather have them use it because it'll prevent them from skidding and cause an accident. As I said before, ESP is designed to be capable of riskier safer driving. I don't think you'll be convinced so get a car without one.
unknownunknowns 4 years ago
And um...fuck you all you bunch of fucking jew sheep. Just forgot to add that in.

ya but what if someone loes control and ram you rear side panel

Hey motocross70 I wouldn't buy a car without ESP!
bbyguy5 4 years ago 5
Gents, I think what JFC (man, what a username) is referring to is possibly misplaced confidence in these devices. There is no free lunch when you take away a good amount of what the driver can put into the system. But I digress...I agree more that motocross70 needs more people on the road not w/ ESP (or whatever it's called), but more drivers w/ brains. I've worked a safety job for the DoD, and I've lost count of the # of times 4WPOV's and 2WPOV's have met with less than satisfactory contact.
ThrottlesUp 4 years ago
JFC, you sound more "anti-American-styled-SUV" than anything, but Citroen now makes an SUV...w/ that variable height the U.S. makers are considering, if that's what you meant. In 2WD, it's low, like a car. Engage 4WD, and you get the traction; lock it in, and you get a nearly half-foot increase in gnd clearance. In short, you only get the "bad" high CG only when you are already driving slowly in poor road conditions (or "lack of road" conditions!).
ThrottlesUp 4 years ago
Yes, but you are a shit driver so it's understandable.

Americans are stupid. They buy vehicles with shitty static and dynamic stability, then demand the manufacturers add on electronic fixes to justify their purchase. Gotta love it. Just keep paying more money, we'll take it.

-You are a fucking idiot.
JELH 4 years ago 6
JELH- I agree. Explorer 4x4 is obviously ignorant in more than one area, ESP and homosexuals. He's obviously not thinking because he states that people have been fine without ESP. Well if that's true then I ask him this, have people been fine without other safety features such as ABS, Traction control, air bags, safety belts?

ESP is for fags. And increases danger in reality. It gets drivers to relaxed causing a false sense of safety.
Explorer4x4 4 years ago
you've obviously never fishtailed a car before. I did it once and I've never been so scared in my entire life. After seeing how big of a difference stability control can make, I've decided it's a feature I don't want to live not having in my car. My new car has it and I'm glad. It's already saved me from one accident, too.

I have been in, and seen, more wrecks and near wrecks then (probably) your entire family. We have never, ever needed ESP or other useless toys. People managed just fine without them before the 1990's. And if you don't want to roll over, stop buying fucking yachts (SUV's)
Explorer4x4 4 years ago
i have 2 second with that! its almost like vehicle companys are promoting bad driving habits with that system! if u have it then great, but dont substitute it for poor judgment!
surferyo 4 years ago
It works for idiots who don't have a good visual scan, but it made primarily for use on dry, hard surfaced roads. It is not evaluated, tested or developed for that day you drop two wheels off the shoulder.
JangoFettaCheeze 4 years ago

JangoFettaCheeze 4 years ago
Yeah I think you said it. It wouldn't be a SUV with all those changes you listed. I still don't think you really know what you're talking about with today's ESP on vehicles. ESP works for both cars and SUVs and I think again you need to do more research. And all the techno babble isn't going to make you right. You probably read that somewhere from an unreliable source no doubt.
dainger15 4 years ago 6
No, I'm a software engineer. You wouldn't believe what mechanical engineers come up with to make these things not roll over. You sometimes end up with 4 to 10-d matrices (I knew that 4th-year calculus would come into use some day) to map the inputs the CAR has to do to keep itself upright in spite of the driver!
JangoFettaCheeze 4 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Just when we think we've got the vehicle to behave itself, you enable the ABS (only test and eval one variable at a time, if you can), and it's okay until the driver applies the brakes....you sometimes end up with ABS and ESC "fighting" what should be the same perturbation... If vehicles used active suspension (like Citroen does)I wouldn't be a slave to the Mech E's.
JangoFettaCheeze 4 years ago
Make sure that the variables have been entered into the vehicles computer so that when the y-axis is off your car won't have the suspension problem or "chit chat" and the matrices have to be turned off so that the driver can drink his cappuccino!!! Or you can just drive your Citroen!!!
dainger15 4 years ago 5
Hahaha! Hilarious dainger15!!! Bottom line is that ESP/ESC or ABS or whatever safety system is put into a car is there to help the driver in moderate to extreme situations compared to vehicles without them. I'll just leave it at that.
bbyguy5 4 years ago 4
He is hilarious. He thinks that the toughest engineering challenges we face are SUV stability targets. The toughest challenges we face are keeping the stylists and marketing from getting corporate to constantly take their side and sell that "cushy, soft ride" that "American car buyers crave" (that's a direct quote from someone in our company). It's sickening. We use electronic band aids to fix deficient mechanical design. Form is supposed to follow function.
JangoFettaCheeze 4 years ago
You end up with a vehicle that can't turn well in an emergency situation (at least dainger15 will be upright when he crashes into what he was trying to avoid in the first place....gotta love ESP, LOL...you're soooo safe with that beautiful piece of kluge...NOT. We're just now trying to fight our way out of a lawsuit with ESP awarded partial fault in the accident settlement.)
JangoFettaCheeze 4 years ago
Wouldn't it be better to hit the object trying to be "avoided" while the car is upright rather than the car flipping over and over? (Considering that the object is unavoidable by either a car or SUV) I think so. What do you mean that the car can't turn very well? Do you even know what you're saying? ESP will help a car stay on the road in a turn that's what is for!!! And about the lawsuit... please... people sue everything and anything these days.
dainger15 4 years ago 3
JangoFettaCheeze, I think you need to do a search on youtube with the tag words "bosch" and "ESP" then watch thoose videos and then you will see what dainger15 is talking about.
bbyguy5 4 years ago 4
dainger15, a little designed-in understeer is a GOOD thing in an SUV, whether we achieve it electronically or mechanically. BTW, I'm a truck owner, too (it's a real truck). Also, the object this guy hit was a vertical concrete overpass abutment, offset collision, driver's side. Tragedy is, w/o ESC he would've sideswiped it and stayed upright. Then again, we can't model all scenarios when we dumb down suspension reactivity to keep a tall CG vehicle upright.

...and (LOL), you won't find me driving a Citroen unless it's a 1973 US-spec SM w/ the Maserati Merak V-6...but we like the way they think (vary height to suit). It's in the works w/ us Big 3 (well, our software-e group is contracted, non-UAW), something simpler than what's on the Cayenne/Touareg.
JangoFettaCheeze 4 years ago
Wow, who's has ever heard of Citroen before you came along. Not many people I can tell you that! (LOL) Who are you anyways, the anti ESC/ESP organization? And NO I don't need you to answer that. (It was a joke)
dainger15 4 years ago 5
When did I say: "that the toughest engineering challenges we face are SUV stability targets"? I want to make it clear; SUVs are here for now and will be for at least several more years. Nothing, not even ESP, Anti-Roll Mitigation, or other Traction Control technologies are going to equal the stability OR agility of a CAR. Cars do benefit, if not more than SUVs, from Electronic Stability Programs because it helps them stay on the road rather than going off because of over steer/under steer.
dainger15 4 years ago 5
Explorer4x4 go roll your SUV and then tell me you still don't think ESP is something you would like to have on your car. Oh wait; you probably would say something like that after you roll your car because you are that ignorant.

haha, i tested a X3 (ESP OFF) suv and he is 10x more stabel than my vw golf4 when changing fast from left to right. (ESP OFF) this is no suv, but steel on wheels.
