i would MARRY Paul Simon or Art Garfunkel just so they could sing too me...i love both of them so much...who cares if i could have called them daddy...still sooo in love with them
@FattyHeartsTV why did this song make you chuckle? don't get me wrong, I love this song. And the chord progression and beat are very lighthearted. But I know very few people who chuckle in response to a light hearted progression.
This song reminds me of my childhood companion and friend who has since passed.. He was such a stubborn dog, but I love him so much. :) Anyways, his name was Julio and this song always reminds me of how much of a pain he could be sometimes. Love you Julio.
Paul said the incident in the song refers to an arrest at an antiwar protest on a college campus, with the "radical priest" being either Philip or Daniel Berrigan, priests noteworthy for their antiwar activity during the Vietnam War.
For all those asking, the song has two commonly accepted interpretations. 1: "Me and Julio" were selling pot. 2: "Me and Julio" were engaged in a homosexual relationship. So pick whichever suits you better.
@MissLove522 paul simon himself said he wasnt exactly sure what "me and julio" did down by the schoolyard, and left it up to the listeners imagination. so i find it hard to believe that you actually know what this song is about. just sayin
This song is about a pedo-bear. HIS Wang's name is Julio and they are often found hanging out by the school yard watching all the sweet little kiddies.. . . . LOL JK i just wanted to make some asshole comment like some people do! Love this song and love Paul Simon!
All you people arguing about what the song means are all wrong. It literally has no meaning. Paul Simon has stated again and again that what was going on was "something sexual" but he never really worked out what exactly because he didn't think it mattered.
@Ukuleleboy100 soooo you're saying it's beautiful then? it is very obviously a successful attempt to make a fun, upbeat head bopping tune about a taboo subject. what is not hilariously cheeky about that? paul sang it on sesame street for god's sake
I love this song and just about every other song Paul Simon has done.
I think its beautiful that they can make a song about getting caught by ur parents smoking pot and getting drunk without being vulgar about it. The subtle context clues and lyrical amazingness as well as every other aspect make this a classic and an amazing song.
To be fair, Simon never states what the actual crime was. We're free to infer anything we like. I always assumed it was something sexual, but then I've always got sex on my mind.
I LOVE this song. I was singing it alll day yesterday. Not enough people my age appreciate paul simon(or, indeed, simon & garfunkel)methinks. At least, not amongst the people I know
i just want to get up and dance , one of my fave s of pauls, he is a hero of mine i love his music , thi ssong is classic take sme back to a good time and place
im not sure why you think this song is hilarious. its perfect. if only people wrote like this nowadays. im willing to bet your life would be different.
Don't be so serious. The song is perfect in part because of its humorous element. Outside of that, it has a real quality of beauty to it. People wrote with such sincerity in those days. If it wasn't sincere, it didn't fly. Nowadays we've nothing but crap. No humor, no soul, no heart, just a modicum of technique and a lot of technology, a bunch of pitch-corrected vocals with a faux Roland 808 drum machine ticking along. Until there is another revolution, there won't be music like this.
Have you never heard of the band Tool? You are correct for the most part though, but we do have one good band that writes beautiful music with meaningful, and yes, sometimes humourous, lyrics.
Yes, I am familiar with Tool. My stepsister "turmed me on" to them. Lyrically they might be one thing, but musically I don't know. The Neil Peart inspired drumming is pretty cool though. I know I am correct. You don't have to tell me, but thanks anyway.
The problem with music these days is that it doesnt sound good. Back in the days of Simon and Garfunkle, Joan Baez, and Bob Dylon, they preformed their stuff live all the time and it was how it sounded on the records. The live CD's i find of the older music is really cool because of the cometary of the singers and that the music is really good. Music now is interesting and good as far as the CD goes but few bands can actually perform live. Its just like movies: all about effects
@washbrook45 I know plenty of ppl who haven't heard of them. I tried to changed that but alas, not their style of music I guess because they didn't want to listen. Their loss.
im pretty sure the songs about a guy who was in a gang, but then got converted into the religious life by a priest and then became a minister of some sort.
From what I've read, Paul Simon doesn't even know what it's about. However, Rolling Stone broke down the song not too long ago. They think "schoolyard" represents a college campuses and "the radical preacher" represents Fr. Dan Berrigen, who was prominent in anti-war protests in the 1960s-70s and was on the cover of Newsweek for it. So, take that for what it's worth.
