I live 20 min from where this breed was made. Kingsville,Texas on the King Ranch. Beautiful place, I actually delivered oil rig casing to a rig on that Ranch, saw the largest group of wild turkeys i've ever seen there.
that bull wasnt even that nice, maybe as a herd sire but if they were looking as a cow calf opperation i would have to see his epds, his profile isnt that nice and his sc didnt seem that large, i was not impressed
They also produced the 1946 triple crown winner "ASSAULT" and the 1950 kentucky derby winner "MIDDLEGROUND" they also had part of La Troienne which is the greatest brood mare of the twentieth century. I have been hunting out there at the King Ranch several times. It truly is an amazing place. So is the Y.O. ranch here in Tx also.
The Santa Gertrudis breed of cattle was developed in Texas by the King Ranch. They were from a Shorthorn and Brahman cross and I think the exact percentage of blood isn't known. They all trace back to the first really good bull they got from their breeding efforts, named 'Monkey' and I suspect that like they did with the Old Sorrel in their Quarter Horses, they likely used 'line breeding' to 'fix' his characteristics.
mmm he is a very nice bull but for a santa he isnt as big as some. but for the bull to be at what he is ten he is a very nice bull. the cattle industry of australia (me being in the std industry) is requiring a more moderate framed speciman rather than a large framed animal. mainly due to drought bigger cattle bigger feed bill. but i agree with you with that he is a very nice bull.
bigger is not better! The Americans have a saying there aint nothing that beats cubic inches. For me a Santa bull should be in the weight range of 800-900kg, be very musculine en show good body comformation. Average rainfall is +- 300mm per year in this area. Namibia is the dryest country South of the Sahara. We don't want over fed dinosaurs.
Cattlerock...No, actually for his breed, he is one of the nicer specimins. Granted is SC is a little small, the rest of him is in the numbers. Perhaps before you judge cattle, you should learn to. Get familiar with the breed before you shoot your mouth off and make a fool of yourself.
i'm in agreance with southernrancher. the breed of santa gertrudis being of the bos indicus line of cattle natuarally have larger pizles than that of bos taurus breeds. for the amount of cows he covers at Yulgilbar station he is worth every cent of it. i personally know the sinamons and they are more than happy with him.
I'm sorry, "We" referred to our family and "States" refered to where I live. And yes I do live in Texas. As another side note we (refering to our family) also have Lowlines. And yes I know their history, too. An as I said before I really like this bull. I'd love to know if in the future his semen will be available in the states?
