  • Dave Somerville is NOT related to Tom Hanks. Hanks was born in Concord, California." His father, Amos Mefford Hanks (born in Glenn County, California, on March 9, 1924 – died in Alameda, California, on January 31, 1992), was an itinerant cook. His mother, Janet Marylyn born in Alameda County, California, on Jan 18, 1932), was a hospital worker." (Wikipedia)

  • In August 1961 Somerville left The Diamonds, married Judy Corns of Evansville, IN, and began a 6-year career as a "solo" folk artist under the name David Troy. In 1967 his only son, David Orlando “Landa” Somerville (now also a singer/songwriter), was born.

  • YA THIS IS FROM 1957. DID ANYONE KNOW THAT DAVE SOMERVILLE, THE LEAD SINGER, IS TOM HANKS DAD? YOU CAN SEE THE RESEMBLENCE IN THE VIDEO.

  • Thanks Bartfardner, only had i had one of those emails going round that said he was !

  • I was told that the lead singer was Tom Hanks Father, is this true ?

  • @onyourbikeuoldfart Absolutely not. That was quite a stretch.

  • these are the original April 1957

    Diamonds...later on, some replaced.

  • If this clip is from the Big Beat, than the Lead is not Tom Hanks (as it came out in 1958 and Hanks was born in 56). In fact I believe everyone in this video are the original members of the band, even The lead singer Dave Somerville although he does look different here.

  • Tom Hanks looks really good singing lead...

  • Whoa! Listen to the pipes on these guys! They had such personalities too! So funny! Also, just as a side note: Bill Reed's voice makes me melt. I definitely felt compelled to hold his hand. :)

  • You're a neat person....why would you call someone names like that....this is a FUN thing....when people wise off like this makes me think...boy, waht a life...they do this for thrills...nobodty likes them, they feel this makes them important.....bet your Mom would be real proud of how you commented on this...and your friends...I bet they're a bunch of COOL GUYS too..just like you.....now, how do YOU lie it...Mr. Sphincter, thank you for your enlightening information.

  • MAGNIFICOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO...MARAVILHOSOOOOOOOOOO...SAUDADEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

  • @FiftiesRockVideos1 Totally agree! I love this version and the clowning around. What fun!

    Thank you for uploading!

  • @butch19571 Those are the original Diamonds.

  • @butch19571 those are the original diamonds you asshole. do some reseach before talking crap

  • @butch19571 omigosh, take a chill pill. this is fun stuff!

  • @butch19571 Don't be silly they are the original group.

  • @eduardo26marzo1963 Sorry Eduardo, but the Diamonds' version (as good as it is) is a cover of an original by The Gladiolas, whose lead vocal was Maurice Williams. There's probably only a couple of months in between the two releases.

  • @GeneRobertson Do not know why this comment. I did not say anything about it.

  • @butch19571 You're kidding, right? I mean you[ve got to teasing us. These ARE the original guys. That's Dave Sommerville singing lead. The bass, who we've recently lost, is Bill Reed. Phil Levitt is the baritone, and Ted Kowalski is the tenor playing around with the handkerchief and adding the falsetto la-la-las. If you watched Doo Wop 51 on PBS, you would have seen them doing this song almost move-for-move, the same way. (I really, really hope you're joking with us.)

  • @butch19571 YOU ARE the moron, how can they insult the originals when they are the originals fool.

  • O maximo!!!!! boa musica!

  • Good quality my azzz

  • @Wizard7520 Read my quality scale!

  • Hugh Laurie on Bass Vocals.

  • @TheTownandTheCityYAY - and Tom Hanks singing lead.

  • Nice...can't recall ever seeing a performance of this from that period in color...

  • @thecountofbasie That's because it's from a movie, "The Big Beat".

  • @FiftiesRockVideos1 That's not an American movie, is it? Always thought the only U.S. rock movie in color from that period was "Girl Can't Help It"...I certainly can't remember this movie regardless

  • @thecountofbasie I'm almost 100 percent sure that it's an American movie.

  • @FiftiesRockVideos1 Just checked IMDb, and it is...the only thing that threw me was the color...that's one movie I can't recall ever seeing, and thanks for posting

  • I LOVE the voices from that era!!! Also the looks they all had

  • Yes, this is about the best quality you can get, for a group from this era. Many thanks for making it available!

  • "Good and Funny" these guys were "Good"...

  • Nice find. This is great. I think the originals still do the same song..

  • I like to see performers enjoying themselves and not taking things too seriously!

  • I saw these guys on American Bandstand when I was really young but not ever in color. Great tune for all time.

  • GREAT TO SEE THIS DONE LIVE...FOR ME IT'S THE FIRST TIME !!

    THANKS !!!
