hello! i'm really interested in getting LX5 but i don't know which colour to get! :( black looks real sleek but the white looks prettyyyy as well but does it get dirty easily? for example, dust collects at the rubber hand grips etc? :(
To be honest, The s95 is too small, compacts just arent for me...i was always nervous it was gonna slip out of my hands (wich it did a few times). id prefer the lx5 now. Plus the s95's pictures are so noisy!
Any chance that a head to head comparative review can take place between whatever and whenever the successor to the Canon S95 makes its appearance & the LX5 with the new firmware upgrade installed that will be released on September 13, 2011? Would definitely be worth another look to see Kai's opinion of the soon to be "new" LX5 v.2.0 vs. Canon's expected S95 replacement. Read about the new firmware's upgrades & tweaks @ the link in my post below. It looks like a VERY good & worthwhile upgrade.
The first firmware upgrade for the LX5 was announced today (Friday, August 26th, 2011). It will be released on September 13th 2011. The announcement can be read here:

Everybody misses the big advantage of the LX-5: it has a multi-aspect-ratio sensor, which means in 16:9 mode it shoots with 9.5mp while the S95 only shoots with 7.5mp due to croping. if you only shoot on 4:3 ratio both cameras have 10mp. read the review on dpreviewdotcom
I have bought this camera two months ago, I'm not professional but I wanted a camera good without being great, I really like, but as active Nosé flash the smart way ... someone could help me please, many gracias.espero their Answers
I was hoping for more from this review. The S95 guy only preferred it due to its size.... The real question should be which is better at taking photographs? That would be the beat comparison. Everybody can look at the two in a shop and compare the size but it's the ease of use and picture quality that a review should concentrate on.
@phall82 i already tested it....the S95 is better....lower noise at high iso, better image quality,Significantly better color depth, more dynamic range.....and yep its true...canon always has better ergonomics...but nikon has better one
@ChrisTheNerf "better"? Only to a point, & any assertion (even if taken presently as gospel, in the "real world" that'll be up for even more debate as the firmware update for the LX5 arrives in 2 wks. . W/ both lenses @ f2.0 the LX5's noise is minimally more visible, true, @ = ISO & shutter speeds. BUT the S95's light gathering ability starts falling off a cliff @ 2X zoom in comparison, necessitating either longer shutter speeds (which ='s tripod), or upping the iso, which creates more noise.
After some long research, I decided to buy the lx5. I prefer the wider angle, as well as faster burst, and longer exposure. I mainly shoot in raw so canon's better jpeg did not matter. The lx5 seems more ideal for people who do not own or want to lug a DSLR, and who is still learning the features of a DSLR. The S95 is more of a compliment to people who already owned a DSLR(like the wedding photographer).
Just a comment, props to Mr. Anthony Yeung for comparing the Canon S95 and the Lumix LX5. But you should not own one of the cameras being compared. This is the most likely source of bias in the comparison/review. Just my two cents.
@ ebb190985 if you don't have a DSLR then go with the lumix LX5 just because you get the best of both worlds. If you have a DSLR then get the powershot just for a back up camera and everyday carry.
i got myself a Leica Dlux5 which is exactly the same but comes with full version of lightroom. of course the price is double. i just want a fucking Leica lol
see My Video Response! Doubting between this and the LUMIX LX5? if not.. i'll make you! I just Uploaded my Very best & highest quality photographs in a Youtube clip, i boughd this one after concidering S95, i fell for the better image quality.. leica lens .. check this video response or my channel.. think twice before buying small.
If i were getting a camera of this size, i.e. unpocketable, i would rather go for a micro four thirds like EPL2 for the way better image quality. The s95 has a slightly better sensor and Jpegs than LX-5 and the only reason is for the slightly brighter lens and zoom/focus in video mode.
Excellent review. I am searching for a good compact camera that I can also use to shoot in video in HD and those two cameras are the ones that stand out. For the sheer size I'd get the s95, but that zoom and autofocus while filming really tip the scale towards the Lumix LX5.
@kockgunner I went for the LX5 instead because of the $100 diff between it and the xz-1. And well being a student, every cent counts. To be honest all of it(LX5, XZ-1, S95 ETC.) are all great cameras. You can not go wrong with either 1 of them. =)
Ok, that is fair enough I suppose, totally true. I went for the LX5 in the end (though the boring black one!) - just would have been nice if there was maybe a "video for beginners" AND a video for intermediate user... :)
This reviewer is still beating around the bush and giving shallow information, not to mention his need to work on his photography skills. It's better to watch a camera review when the pictures shown have good composition.
Well that was as about as disappointing as one could expect. "So it comes down to ergonomics and continuous autofocus and zoom during video". Really? REALLY? Is that really what will decide it for you? Ergonomics - yes! Agreed. But was ONCE the difference in focal lengths and wide angle of LX5 mentioned?!! The great macro advantage the LX5 has? The great control ring of the S95?? The speedier focussing of the LX5, and faster continuous shooting rate? What's important, man?!?!??!?!?!?
Well that was as about as disappointing as one could expect. "So it comes down to ergonomics and continuous autofocus and zoom during video". Really? REALLY? Is that really what will decide it for you? Ergoniomics - yes! Agreed. But was ONCE the difference in focal lengths and wide angle of LX5 mentioned?!! The great macro advantage the LX5 has? The great control ring of the S95?? The speedier focussing of the LX5, and faster continuous shooting rate? What's important, man?!?!??!?!?!?
@tranceaddict1980 To the VAST majority of people I know, ergonomics and style are the most important factors when buying a camera. They don't even know what macro is, or care how fast a camera focuses, turns on, etc. Only a few even notice how far one can zoom and almost none notice the difference between "digital" and "optical" zoom. Those are the people to whom compact cameras are marketed.
Keep in mind that lens cap is firmly and conveniently attached to the strap holder on the camera with provided strong little string, which loops through tiny holes on the cap. U r not going to lose it. Awesome camera. I got one - white - killer look.
Define first the price you accept to pay, LX5 is maybe more expensive, then the type of pictures that you want to take (usually) and whether specs satisfy you or are at the limit.
If both are on par, read comments on forums, and check the ergonomy, the ease to access to sub-menus, the overall ease of use. But for this you need to find a store where you both compacts are on free access.
@titipsy Just loop provided string through the cover cap and strap holder on cam , and forget about it....That cap will insure couple, may be 3-4 , extra years of operation for your lenses/camera.
@ebb190985 U mean Canon S95 ( S92 discontinued ). Both r very good cams ! But, Canon the wAAAAy smaller. U better have little sticky fingers to operate it , or U `ll drop it. Lumix feels very sturdy, looks incomparably better," Classy" then Canon, but U won`t slip it in the Jeens pocket ; may be jacket or coat pocket - Yes. I got the pouch on my belt. IMHO Canon looks cheap and dull. But that just me.
@kuturgan EX1 has a brighter lens & a better more versatile screen, yes. If one's willing to ignore that the EX1 has the shortest focal length (i.e. the "weakest zoom power") of any currently produced compact fixed lens p&s camera in this class, as well as ignore that the EX1's VGA video quality looks "stone-age" against the competition's (at least) 720p HD video, to tick just 2 features off. Any claims that the EX1 is "way better" than the competition, must be based, indeed, on price alone.
@ebb190985 Try the lx5 if you dont like it try the s95. But id say dont start with the s95 i just got mine yesterday and sent it back today. Bad image quality...VERY NOISY.
The problem on this compact is the cover and it is cumbersome lens compared to Lumix TZ10 (or TZ20). But its very PLUS point is that it supports RAW image standard, so it takes pictures without compressing and losing details (what cannot support the TZ series that cpmpresses images heavily)
Hey guys. Help me out, in future i want to get myself a camera, what is pocketable, max. money i would waste on it would be 400 dollars. So i'm stuck with S95, Panasonic TZ-7 and this. What would you guys recommend, my main thing with camera would be recording.
Size is the S95's true advantage--and it's a "big" one--but this video implies that auto focus & zoom in video mode is the only advantage that the LX5 has to offer. This ignores the LX5's lens, which starts at a wider 24mm equivalent (versus 28mm) and is rather faster at the long end (3.3 versus 4.9). This will matter to lot of users. Both cameras are great, and it's oddly pleasant to be faced with such a difficult decision.
Does the LX5 have continuous autofocus during movie mode? I currently have the S95 and it cannot focus during movie mode, which is the only nerve racking thing about the s95.
Interesting review...I just ordered the LX-5 two days ago, after hemming and hawing about the s95. Decided that I was willing to accept the extra bulk in exchange for the better video capabilities and slightly brighter lens. Though had I seen this video review first...
@GalacticX I beg to differ, my cousins from Hong Kong all tend to speak in American accents, its what they learn in school. Also due to the prevalence of American media
I really need to know the name of the last song played, you know--the "wrapping up" song. C'mon please Kai. That song makes me happy, I need it on my iPod.
You guys are the Top Gear of camera reviews. Very entertaining. Stay crazy!
As to the review and comparison with the S95. I would also pick the S95 as a carry around camera over the Lx5. If I wanted a chunky camera that couldn't fit in my jeans pocket I'd bring my EP-1 instead.
@crunkidy2 this camera offers exactly what you need for a photo of dslr quality. tx9 is a point and shoot camera while this is a semi-pro. you are a pro, get the lx5. if you just want to take pictures, get the tx9
@SlurpSilencer thank you but i kinda through it out the running now because it cannot fit in my pocket so i was against the s95 or the tx9 the main reason why im leaning to the tx9 is because it has 1080i hd video recording i dont know it the s95 hd video can come on par and i think no optical zoom during vid im not sure tho
I just got this camera today! It's still charging and I can't wait to play with it. The store only had the white one in stock :( I was looking forward to the black one but after getting the white one (on sale) it's actually growing on me. The camera is surprisingly small even though the white one looks cheap and plastic-ey and large in photos.
The LX5 might have zoom (and maybe auto focus while recording?) but with the Canon you can install custom firmware (CHDK) and have the SAME features.
I don't see why you wouldn't go with the S95 if you can add zoom, focus, and many other features just by installing the CHDK while still having a smaller camera. S95 for me! :D
@dkthemovie there no contest in auto focus even hacked the panasonic auto focus is the best. Why would you get a cam to hack it when the other camera has all the features? maybe to void your warranty! i would rather get a leica lens over a canon any day.
this is the best review i found ever..... word from the master : choose the compact one if u want a compact one..... it not compact enough, then it's not a good compact one..... :)
One of the largest gripes with the S90 was the lack of any sort of grip. It became such a problem that a 3rd party made $35 grips to stick onto the S90. Now I believe Canon changed the surface of the S95 to something more tactile, but it's nice to see the LX5 have a physical grip. The S95 is nice, and I've been using Canon all my life, but these days, I have my smartphone with me wherever I go. I hate lugging around an SLR, so a mid-size might work best for me.
- better lens: 24mm vs 28mm (but 90mm vs 105mm) but more luminous in tele (3.3f vs 4.3f) and a little sharper
-better macros
-much better videos
-twice faster focusing and taking photos (lx5 is really really fast to be a compact)
-faster photos (1/2000vs1/1600) and better for night photos (60secs vs 15secs)
-a little more dynamic range
Both, in sum, are pretty similar but if you want better size and a little cheaper: S95, if you want a slighty more complete camera and better videos LX5
OMG it's xiaxue's camera!! I want this so bad! I'm gonna save up for this. I'll sell my shitty canon ixus 870is because the photos are always dark and blurry(and desaturated) without flash. But this camera is perfect! LX5 I WANT YOU! I also want to bling this like what xiaxue did :D
Another distinction between the two cameras is a difference in their drive mode performance. The S95 manages 0.9 frames per second, whereas the LX5 can take 2.5 fps. Potentially of importance if you take a lot of sports photographs for example, and want to be sure of capturing the action.

Panasonic Lumix LX5 vs Canon Powershot S92, most of all a financial and emotional issues. They are indeed almost on par and very similar.
I had Canon PS and Lumix. So it is difficult to choose.
I only know that the cover of the LX5 tends to fall down (there is not incorported cover like on TZ series).
Check the review and specs on Dpreview, your best source of information.

@titipsy Just loop provided string through the cover cap and strap holder on cam , and forget about it....That cap will insure couple, may be 3-4 , extra years of operation for your lenses/camera.

ebb190985 1 year ago 25
@ebb190985 U mean Canon S95 ( S92 discontinued ). Both r very good cams ! But, Canon the wAAAAy smaller. U better have little sticky fingers to operate it , or U `ll drop it. Lumix feels very sturdy, looks incomparably better," Classy" then Canon, but U won`t slip it in the Jeens pocket ; may be jacket or coat pocket - Yes. I got the pouch on my belt. IMHO Canon looks cheap and dull. But that just me.

@ebb190985
Buy Samsung EX1. It's a way better and cheaper.
kuturgan 5 months ago

Bad image quality...VERY NOISY.

ebb190985 1 year ago

Both cameras are great, and it's oddly pleasant to be faced with such a difficult decision.
jeselmira2 1 year ago
The lx5 easily beats the s95

Does the LX5 have continuous autofocus during movie mode? I currently have the S95 and it cannot focus during movie mode, which is the only nerve racking thing about the s95.

Interesting review...I just ordered the LX-5 two days ago, after hemming and hawing about the s95. Decided that I was willing to accept the extra bulk in exchange for the better video capabilities and slightly brighter lens. Though had I seen this video review first...

You guys are the Top Gear of camera reviews. Very entertaining. Stay crazy!
As to the review and comparison with the S95. I would also pick the S95 as a carry around camera over the Lx5. If I wanted a chunky camera that couldn't fit in my jeans pocket I'd bring my EP-1 instead.

crunkidy2 1 year ago
@crunkidy2 this camera offers exactly what you need for a photo of dslr quality. tx9 is a point and shoot camera while this is a semi-pro. you are a pro, get the lx5. if you just want to take pictures, get the tx9
SlurpSilencer 1 year ago
@SlurpSilencer thank you but i kinda through it out the running now because it cannot fit in my pocket so i was against the s95 or the tx9 the main reason why im leaning to the tx9 is because it has 1080i hd video recording i dont know it the s95 hd video can come on par and i think no optical zoom during vid im not sure tho

Thank You - It.s so hard to get an honest and unbiased review of anything these day's but you nailed this one - I'm off to get a LX5 - Cheers.

S95 for me! :D
dkthemovie 1 year ago
@dkthemovie there no contest in auto focus even hacked the panasonic auto focus is the best. Why would you get a cam to hack it when the other camera has all the features? maybe to void your warranty! i would rather get a leica lens over a canon any day.

LX5 pros
- better lens: 24mm vs 28mm (but 90mm vs 105mm) but more luminous in tele (3.3f vs 4.3f) and a little sharper
-better macros
-much better videos
-twice faster focusing and taking photos (lx5 is really really fast to be a compact)
-faster photos (1/2000vs1/1600) and better for night photos (60secs vs 15secs)
-a little more dynamic range
Both, in sum, are pretty similar but if you want better size and a little cheaper: S95, if you want a slighty more complete camera and better videos LX5
jhuesos 1 year ago
Yes, both are pretty simillar in terms of Image Quality, but there are some small differences which makes me chose LX5.
S95 pros:
-more pocketable
-stereos sound in videos
-better jpegs (less nouse reduction and more detailed photos)
-less noise in the same ISO (but here LX5 can use more open aperture because has brighter optics in tele)
(continue...)

The whole review was encapsulated when Anthony Yeung was asked if he would give up the S95 for a free LX5..

AgentCodyBankz 1 year ago
Another distinction between the two cameras is a difference in their drive mode performance. The S95 manages 0.9 frames per second, whereas the LX5 can take 2.5 fps. Potentially of importance if you take a lot of sports photographs for example, and want to be sure of capturing the action.
