Two men came into the centre last sunday curious about the francophone group who hosted the festival Festival Du Bois.
I was soon giving them a tour of our place and it's stories as we discussed the dynamics of a 100 year old lonely french island amidst an ocean of english.
What has been happening in that 100 years?
After seeing the video, the quietest man soberly responds:
"People DO change though." During the war, he had watched a man shot in front of his son. The son then tried fighting off the soldier, but the soldier kicked him down.
Like most from his home country, he hadn't forgiven Germans when left more then fifty years ago. He came back home twenty years later, and he was surprised to see Germans welcomed and accepted.
His countrymen had forgiven Germany. He says he still had not.
My thoughts run like a river these days... sensing the landscape/ Mindscape configuration of this LAND ... called Canada..
To have opened this window , so that the ' Mind of Canada" in fact and in deed..., COMMUNICATES it's existence...
Communicates it's deepest thoughts .
Communicates it's deepest meanings..
Explorers and Discovers.., as we continue mining the rich veins of materials that has come our way after having looked into this 100th Anniversary of Maillardville..
I went to a bar after Florence's art exposition "Maillardville, 100 and Beyond". I was charged - inspired by a community rallying around a strange place overflowing with celebration and self appreciation.
We were a large, noisy and happy group. At one point the artist, Florence, turns to me and asks what had happened to our video. I unfolded my mere week old laptop right in front of her. I was then able to watch her re-live every moment seen in the interview.
The video captured well what it is like to live in two languages, including the preciousness of the original language and culture.

His countrymen had forgiven Germany. He says he still had not.
Yet, he maintained, "People DO Change."

I was in a loud room, and heard that a married couple at the next table over was from Maillardville.
He grew up on the top of the hill only speaking english.
She grew up on the bottom of the hill speaking french.
They both reminisced how their childhood place looked growing up...
So, as they both begin carefully watching this, one becomes very, very still. The other becomes restless.
I need a headset. It is difficult to hear.
Yet, both watch carefully, each immersed in their own way.
