There's an easier way to get fire! If you want something that floats, is windproof and lightweight, get Instafire. They now have matches that are windproof, light while wet and stay lit even when dipped in a river! Check out their website. Instafire com
Looks great, but if I were you I'd draw the flint along the steel, rather than the other way around. It controls where the sparks go a bit better- I noticed a good deal of them weren't hitting the tinder.
What fire steel did you use, because i have a swedish firesteel (with green handle duno if that makes any difference), but i dont get that easy and much sparks as you do seems like you don't push that hard on it too.
Ok, green handle means it could be the army model(, the best one) but I also have a scout model one with a green handle, so judge it by the thickness of the flint. Nearer a centimeter is probably army, nearer a half centimeter is prop scout. Also, to get more sparks, you have to lean hard. The striker you get with it is pretty awful useless you shapen it up, an old penkinfe gives MUCH better results. Please comment if this helps. =D
Let's see... I would think you got a Light My Fire™ Firesteel... You will get more sparks when you've used it a bit... Just take a little hike one day and use it a little, and voila, you got a nicely working Firesteel™. Now remember to not ignite anything if it's too dry outside, always bring a big bottle of water if you know it's relatively dry outside! Have a safe trip!
And I noticed that he's using the same type as you... Or to say it like this: the best one... The color of the handle has nothing to say... At all! That's all... And I just noticed that you've had your Firesteel™ for about 7 months now... Sorry about that... That's all!
nothing much. they are a type of pine wood with high resin content. They are easy to light and burn for much longer than ordinary wood. Also, the high pine content makes them easier to light even when slightly wet than ordinary. you can get them at "light my fire"
the whole point of a fire steel over matches or a lighter is that you can do it anywhere and anytime even when your out of lighter fluid or your matches get wet
It did leave a black mark but that easily washed off. That is not a wooden floor its on a stool. I don't know the term (maybe some sort of laminated coating) but it does not burn or scar that easily. got to test both ;). Looks like wood but not wood.
Firesteel is an alloy of several metals and produces sparks that are 3000°C (5,500°F). A flint also produces sparks but I don't know if they get this hot.
No that was Firesteel and maya dust (See video description) shavings. It took me a number of strikes because I was new to this then. Now, It just takes me one strike.
