I agree with much that R.Scruton has so say, in fact just about all of what he observes. There must be and there IS a divine standard which rises above man's thinking and his own conclusion of the matter of beauty and it is not to be found in churches of Christendom or the overall state of affairs of man and HIS IDEA of beauty ,art and truth.
The grand Maker of Earth and man does NOT entirely leave us alone to our own devices and limits; we have his Word, hopefully we all read
Finding the reason to be beautiful or ugly should be art's purpose in todays world, not ugly for the sake of ugly or beautiful for the sake of being beautiful. Function and form should exist "side by side", especially in the 21st century.
@rickelmonoggin We are all well aware of the direction "complex criticism" has taken us. Just like in our current financial woes, COMPLEXITY HIDES THE CON.
And what an unsurprising "coincidence" one discovers upon peeling back the tissue of lies that has obscured the truth.
In the decline of our aesthetic "morals" as in our financial ethics...
"Conning-cousins", whispering their falsehoods with kindred tongues.
"They are of their father, the devil... there is no truth in him."
John 8:47 "He that is of God heareth God's words; ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God."
John 8:44 "Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own, for he is a liar and the father of it."
John 8:48 Then the Jews answered and said unto Him........
As we all know, priests are the most evil enemies to have -- why should this be so? Because they are the most impotent. It is their impotence which makes their hate so violent and sinister, so cerebral and poisonous. The greatest haters in history -- but also the most intelligent haters -- have been priests. Beside the brilliance of priestly vengeance all other brilliance fades. cont.
Human history would be a dull and stupid thing without the intelligence furnished by its impotents. Let us begin with the most striking example. Whatever else has been done to damage the powerful and great of this earth seems trivial compared with what the Jews have done, that priestly people who succeeded in avenging themselves on their enemies and oppressors by radically inverting all their values, that is, by an act of the most spiritual vengeance.
This was a strategy entirely appropriate to a priestly people in whom vindictiveness had gone most deeply underground. It was the Jew who, with frightening consistency, dared to invert the aristocratic value equations good/noble/powerful/beautiful/ happy/favored-of-the-gods and maintain, with the furious hatred of the underprivileged and impotent, that "only the poor, the powerless, are good; only the suffering, sick, and ugly, truly blessed. cont.

But you noble and mighty ones of the earth will be, to all eternity, the evil, the cruel, the avaricious, the godless, and thus the cursed and damned!" ... We know who has fallen heir to this Jewish inversion of values.... In reference to the grand and unspeakably disastrous initiative which the Jews have launched by this most radical of all declarations of war, I wish to repeat a statement I made in a different context (Beyond Good and Evil), cont.
that it was the Jews who started the slave revolt in morals; a revolt with two millennia of history behind it, which we have lost sight of today simply because it has triumphed so completely. pp.167-168,
I don't feel that he's a pessimist, I understand how he would say that some modern arts has made a mockery of art. Modern art versus historical art, scultpures, painting, music...when was the last time you can stare into a piece a scultpure or painting or close your eyes and feel the music. Feel your heart & soul into something & enjoy it? In the state of "GAGA" it's outlandish & exotic but I see no spiritual connection with modern art or architechture. I thought it was eye opening, Thank You
this documentation is really interesting not only because of its approach to the concept of beauty and art. what i find almost more fascinating is this extreme longing for past times and the resentfulness that the world has changed so much. Scrutons approach to modern art and aesthetics is so pessimistic that i wonder how he is still able to appreciate life in all its glory!
Amazing!

Scruton seems to want to distill art criticism down to a work of art being either 'beautiful' or 'ugly'. It's incredibly simplistic.

So. 272 of us went through the whole series. 272 out of 7 billion ain't bad. It's pathetic. Lady Gaga has 1 billion hits.
