TED is a great way to understand how you're using power down to the device in question. I've considered installing one on my house for some time. For purposes of this exercise, TED isn't necessary, but could provide some additional insights, especially as one approaches the electrical 'tipping point'.

It's even cooler to do it all with a portable TED device (The Energy Detective); I've got one and can watch everything down to single watt. I've never tried this -- peak solar and turning everything on, though -- will try it now.
