Dodd's voice was much richer, deeper at this gig. That comes with age. A lot of singers age like fine wine. Some just deteriorate. Peter Tork is one that has improved markedly since the 60's. He wasnt a singer in the 60's or even into the 80's. He's good now
I'm a personal friend of Bruce Allen, the Original Bass Player for the Standels. He became a band teacher and ended up in a very small town in NM. I was 16 when I met him. He was a very nice person. Once he heard me play drums, he helped to get me into Berklee College of music, and some auditions with Sugarloaf and a couple other big bands. I sure would like to find him.
Good morning, do you like sixties? Listen and pod cast my program " great sound of 60' s " on the site plumfm. Greeting and made blooper in rock and roll.
Salut, vous aimez les sixties ? Ecoutez et podcatez mon émission "le super son des sixties" sur plum fm. Salut et faites gaffe au rock'n roll.
Dickie is my cousin. He no longer plays with the group as he's had health issues over the years (broke his hands years ago). Did you guys know that he was one of the original Mouskateers?
These guys, Question Mark and the Mysterians, Eric Burdon and the Animals(to name a few), were typical of that great, blusey, street-tough sound that was so 60's. My junior- high days. What a time! Awesome music.
I was in a band called The Trip, local band from San Gabriel Valley, CA. We played a gig one night at a place called The Music Machine and did Dirty Water and Good Guy Don't Wear White. During a break Tony Valentino (guitarist) and Larry Tamblyn came up and chatted with us. Thought that was pretty cool. About 18 years ago.
@mattsabby I remember that band, the Trip. They were originally the Zanti Misfits. I saw them a few times. They were pretty good, especially if you are a 60's garage fan like me. I was also in a 60's revival band at the time but we never got anywhere near the notoriety that The Trip got. i've still got my Vox Jaguar stored under the bed.
Don't know anything about the history of Standells, but Paul Downing is down has an ex member. I guess he wasn't an orginal member, and maybe played with them after their chart success.
Dick & Tony are no longer playing with the Standells. Larry has a new version with a drummer from 68 and one of the original bass players. You can find him on facebook.
@kingvidiot66 Oh, I'm so sad to hear about that - they're gonna do my hometown Oslo the 24 of June and NO Dick and Tony in anymore?! That's such a shame! BTW; and this is a strange thing to admit, but at least on this recording I think Dick Dodd sings better than he ever did, even compared to those classic sixties recordings. Wow!!
With all due respect, as I understand it Dick and Tony both quit the Standells one year ago, after backing out of two tours. FYI, the CaveStomp concert was over eleven years ago. That was then; this is now. Just curious, does anyone ask Paul Revere where any of the other original Raiders are? You're talking about two people who are now in their 60's and 70's respectively. The group is now composed of original members Larry (1962) and John (1967), plus Paul (1969). At least they're still touring!
@Chizoom Hi, I'm not going down on anybody here, just expressed my feelings towards not seeing two of my heroes; 60-70 years or not.. It's fully understandable they won't do it anymore, and I have lots of respect for them as well as for those who continue. I'm grateful to see any of those guys live and no, I didn't expect to see a complete 1966 line-up. And yes, I'm well aware of the fact that this clip is eleven years old - I'm just curious to see how they sound today, and I look forward to it.
I really appreciate your respect for the group. They do have videos available on You Tube and on their Facebook page of recent concerts they've done at Amoeba Music and at the Echoplex which I have to say are pretty impressive. I'm sure if you see them in concert, like I have, you're going to quite surprised.
Untrue. Neither Dick Dodd nor Tony Valentino ever left The Standells. Any version of The Standells presently out in clubs is not the real Standells. Everyone knows The Standells as Dick singing & playing drums, Tony Valentino playing guitar, Larry Tamblyn on keys. That will never change. If you see or hear any version of the band without Dick & Tony, you are not seeing the REAL DEAL!

The Yankees have as much of a chance as the N'Y. Knicks do in the N.B.A. that's about 954,428,738,539,628 to 1. That New Yanke Stadium will be old and falling apart before the Yankees win the World Series.
Great stuff!!! When the song first came out, it was one of the first songs I learned when I started in music. That was back in........well......it was back a ways..lol
They say you lose a step with age. That may be true but these guys still haven't lost the BEAT they get better with age.. Boston is my home and always will be. I live right near the Charles. Boston you are my home.
Yeah, there was a confrontation. Dickie happened to have a personal friend at KLBJ the day the fake turned up. He called Dick in California and Dick was able to fly out in time to hook up with the police and catch the guy. Dick said they deputized him and went to the show. They let the guy get to the second song and rushed him, took him behind the club, cuffed him and the officer grabbed the guy by the back of his head and said "Dick Dodd, meet Dick Dodd." and turned him to face the real Dick.
What fun! I was working at the WFMU record show with Craig Moore from Gonn and Dickie was at the WFMU table next to us. Really cool guy. I still have the T-shirt he gave me. Craig and I where supposed to have been at this show, but when we got to the venue no one could find our names. I worked at a radio station in Austin that had interviewed a guy that was claiming to be Dickie in the 80's and Dickie gave me the complete lowdown on the situation.
I'm from Austin, and I remember when that happened. In fact, I think there was a "confrontation" or something when the fake Dickie was on stage! It was on the radio...don't remember which station.
That's not sad. That's what happens in life....you get old.. and there's nothing wrong with that because the soul never gets old :)I think it's great that they still play! :D

Back at Interlochen summer '66, there was a kid who could
PLAY the riff from this song. We were impressed, it was the
