There's a LSO recording of "West Side Story" with Michael singing the role of Tony if anyone is interested. I think you can get it on Amazon. Very fun to hear him speak with an American accent during "Maria"

I agree with people that Ball is amazing. I don't deny that Lesley is amazing, she's just a bit too amazing for Maria. She has the fuller voice, and would make a great Anita. Maria should have a bit more wispy soprano.

Would you people get real! You are not critiquing a Broadway show - it's just a performance of a song by two great singers, neither one of which is right in sound or looks for being the stars in a play about a couple of love-struck street kids. But few people of the right age and look (let alone ones having the proper accents) could ever sing on this level. Lesley Garrett is perfect for this duet with Michael Ball. How many female voices could stand up to the power of his singing?

@WHhunt4 That's what I noticed too. I always thought his voice had the tendency of overpowering the people he sings with, especially the female singers, which doesn't always happen because usually the higher voice can be heard over the lower one. But I don't mind the overpowering, his voice is that good.

ball has a voice thats perfect for tony. but her voice is too old. she sounds like shes trained in opera. the character of maria is nieve and young with a youthfullness to her voice. i cant fall in love with the song or the character when the voice is old.

she does have an amazing voice though. id like to hear her sing musetta's waltz or something older...

A lot of opera singers sing musical theatre too. Are you all jealous that she has a far stronger voice than yourselves coz I doubt you could do any better and that's why she is a CBE and Britains most popular soprano.
