Eric is a great man and definitive for Jane's early sound.
Ppl bitch about Starys but it was all written in the same musical structures that NS and Ritual. But since Eric wasn't there, ppl didn't even gave it a chance.
As far as his solo material goes, I find to be weak and predictable... Not even gonna mention the "lyrics"....
The way Eric Avery makes his music and his thoughts about it kind of remind me of myself, only with a LOT more talent. To buy his CD I will have to import it to Sweden myself...
Yeah it suck that Eric isn't in Jane's. But come on, they got Duff McKagan of GNR, that's a solid replacement if you ask me. I hope the chemistry is good and I can't wait for their new album :)
I guess I was generalizing about PFP. The fact is that I only heard a few songs by them, but never listened to their albums. I did like the song about humans as pets (can't remember the name of it) and a few other songs. Once we get used to a particular band's sound, we kind of get stuck on it. Instead I should have recognized that people like Farrell are all about breaking new ground and against the whole idea of falling into a creative rut.
I really like the original Jane's Addiction sound, with Avery. Porno for Pyros and the new Jane's Addiction didn't have the same "feel," so I kind of lost interest. But when I hear Eric's solo work, it has a mystical sound that I was picking up in the original Jane's. It's great he followed his intuition and went his own way.
I see what you mean but PFP was still amazing. I don't know why Jane's fans don't like PfP. You had perry at his prime (listen to his damn singing on the albums and live during that time)Perry was a complete Badass was a great time!1
It sounds as though Perry needs to take a cue from Eric Avery. Surprisingly, his stuff sounds infinitely better than anything poor Perry has done since 1993 or so. So very sad. O, how I used to love Jane's back in the day.
I don't care for Avery's vocals very much but the music is quite good. Now if only he could help redirect Perry into producing quality music again. That would be amazing.

Eric Avery is an absolutely phenomenal bass player. That being said, I think it's painfully obvious that he takes himself and all his lil' "projects" waaaaaay too seriously, and comes off as a pompous ass. He's constantly talking about how he was "so reluctant" to do something with this band, or that band. Even the current "NIN/JA"-tour, he's posted a whiney ass blog about. So y'know what...don't do it, motherfucker! They'll call Chris Chaney up and that'll be that. Fuck this guy.
Eric was THE sound of Jane's... listen to Jane's, then Deconstruction, then any neuvo-Jane's and you'll notice the one and MAIN ingredient missing from the last is Eric.
I cannot WAIT to get this disk tomorrow! I didn't even know it was out until today.
I've heard players say that when they were first starting out, Eric made them realize what exactly the bass was, and how it fit in to the overall scope of things. Frankly, I hear a LOT of Robert Smith in Eric's style, but that's just me.
I completely know what you mean. I learned to play bass by playing along with Nothing's Shocking and he does have a very similar sound to the Cure, particularily the Pornography album. Also there's a huge Bauhaus and Joy Division influence in his work I think.
