First, that wasn't a Marine that was a Soldier of the US Army's 101st Airborne.

Second there's a number of problems the US faces that the insurgents don't. 1) a hostile local population to conceal and protect insurgents. 2) Terrain that makes offensive operations particularly difficult. 3) The insurgents are familiar with the terrain and have been able to use infrastructure, tunnels dating back to the Soviet Afghan war.

Actually the use of the word Taliban is a mistake. The Taliban includes many people in Afghanistan..because the fighters that make up the insurgency include Uzbek, Pakistanis, Afghans, Chechens. Thus the Taliban should NOT be thought of as a small number of resilient guerrillas. They have their own private resources to draw upon...they can smuggle weapons from Pakistan, draw upon reinforcements from Waziristan. The opium production provides them with finances any private army dreams of.
