I didn't hear the U.S. military complaining when the British military among others joined our forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, a military that has openly gay men and women fighting alongside our own. Where was the lack of cohesion and morale then?

Consider that homophobes, racists, and bigots can be very disruptive to morale and unit cohesiveness in the military. Each situation needs to be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. A blanket policy of dont ask, dont tell that coincidentally creates institutionalized closeting of gay servicemen seems, at least, unfair, unethical, and unenlightened. For military officers to suggest otherwise seems to bring into question the leadership and the professionalism of our military generally.

homosexuals served in the military prior to Don't Ask Don't Tell, homosexual serve in the military under DADT, and homosexuals will continue to serve in the military when the rule prohibiting open homosexuals is repealed (and it will be).

So straight marines are already serving with gay marines who pretend to have a girl friend in order not to be suspected of being gay. Gay marines act dishonestly by laughing at gay jokes and boasting about their sexual exploits while on liberty (off duty). DADT doesn't stop gay marines from serving. It stops gay Americans who would enlist were it not for the DADT policy.

the public is quickly moving to be supportive of homosexual civil rights. it is inevitable that the the near future will see gays openly serving in the military (and they are not making their non-chosen sexuality public any more or any less than heteros) and same sex marriage will be legally recognized. Why is it government's province to tell employers who to hire. I thought qualifications were a good enough standard. You can't enforce diversity. If employers don't want to hire gays they don't have to. If employers don't want to hire women they don't have to.
