  • How do you know it has asbestos?

  • I agree - however in this case the roof material is 15 to 20 years old and I would never suggest that this aged roof be disturbed when adding a mastic product can achieve the water intrusion protection needed for the few remaining years this roof has left. When the roof is replaced I agree new flashing needs to be added and absolutely would expect this to be installed, unlike what was completed when the 2 second layer was added.

  • if you're going to fix that, you should do it right. there is no need for mastic (hydroseal) when dealing with pipe or vent flashing situations on a composition shingle roof. have it flashed correctly by a professional. your going to have to replace a few shingles in the process but its worth it to have it done right.
