All over ytube there is bickering over versions of songs. The simple fact is, we have emotional attatchment to the songs of our youth. When we discover other versions, even if they are the originals, we will most likely still prefer the ones familiar to us.
Man, this never ends. A white artist has success covering a black artist's song & they are thieves. But if it's the other way around, well that's different. Yes, racial bigotry is still with us....and it goes both directions.
@CKdillan The problem lies in the fact that, in a perfect world with an equal playing field, the original R&B version by The Valentinos would have gotten across-the board airplay on ALL radio stations , and would have been revered as the biggest hit. But, sadly, that same racial bigotry you mentioned , on the part of radio stations and the general public has kept, and still keeps, that from happening.Had The Valentinos been White, The Stones' cover may have never been a hit. That's the problem.
out of LA rather than Cleveland? Yes. Pls know-alls confirm. To the debate, the Stones' version is a steal not just in so far as it is a cover: the tempo is identical, and the style of the vox is a borderline steal. Love Jagger' s thing on it (his is better than any of the other Stones on this one, pals). But they robbed it, and I'm hoping Bob still gets some cash from it.
I've no problem with anyone liking the original better. But all this hate thrown at the Stones, just for recording a song they liked, is idiotic. And color shouldn't have anything to do with it. Even way back then, black artists had big success covering white artists songs also.
I never thought this was a great song, to start with. The vocalist in this version shouts and howls more than Jagger and probably is more effective in the delivery, still the difference with the Stones version is the sound quality and the arrangement. Which is something most of all these american originals lack compared with the british renditions. The thing that still stays in my mind after all these years is Jones job at the end.
Can't believe all these comments about the Stones ripping off this song. Do these boneheads really think the Valentinos never performed other artists songs?
Props to Bobby for writing this song. How dare those Rolling Stones rip him off. What other song is Bobby known for? There's "California Dreamin" from 1968. Oh Oh, that's a Mamas & Papas song. How 'bout his biggest hit of all from 1974? "Lookin' for a Love"? Uh, that was written by J.W. Alexander. Well wouldn't that mean. . . . . .OMG, Bobby Womack is a rip-off artist, just like the Stones!!
Good point. Let's be honest, if the Rolling Stones hadn't released this song, none of these guys crying rip-off would have ever heard it. In fact they probably would never have known the Valentinos existed. If you hate all covers, you better investigate the origins of all your favorite songs. Many of them won't be your faves anymore.
@UncleWaynerd Womack got paid, what pisses me off is an inferior cover better known than original, which sadly happened with many great r&b classics. They were known in Black community, just hadn't "crossed" over.
It's excellent. And it deserves to be recognized for being the original. But why slam the Stones for "ripping" it off. All bands do covers. The Stones idolized guys like this & helped bring their music to the world.
BRAIN DEAD young people always bringing up MICK JAGGER! What an insult! Noisy animals! Not discriminating against Noisy Animals! They're galaxies ahead of P DIDDY, JAY Z, SCOOP DOG! But I'm so critical, that not even BOBBY WOMACK for me, ever did it like the VALENTINOS. I liked them better when they were KIDS!
Keith Richard's guitar playing on this cover puts Womack's version to shame. Womack is using an old rhythm pattern like Chuck Berry played on Memphis for The Valentino's version. Admittedly Keith steals a few of Chuck's licks for The Stones version, but more tastefully done than the primitive version of The Valentinos
@Blacksardine I dont know if Ive ever head the stones called more "tasteful" than anyone. Your opinion is wholeheartedly ridiculous. Brits did not invent rock & roll, they enjoyed it.
@Blacksardine " Admittedly Keith steals a few of Chuck's licks for The Stones version, but more tastefully done than the primitive version of The Valentinos"
And Jagger should have ripped his tonsils out for even attempting to sing a Bobby Womack song! Luckiest no talent ever. Madonna of his day.
I use to think this was a rollin stones original, but I'm glad I found out that it was a cover and this version kills the stones rendition. This Is Awesome.
I've never heard this before. Thanks. Interesting lead guitar fills there; kinda reminds me of Chuck Berry's delicate lead on his own "Memphis" in tone and phrasing.
I been lokking for this copy for years, and finally found it.Without groups like these to do some knocks offs, the Stones and others never would have ben so sucessful.
Great songs live forever and sometimes have twisted ironic paths...This the original and most famously covered by the Stones, decades later it is revived by Dr. John & the Dirty Dozen which strangely enough turned it into a New Orleans classic, played by virtually everyone here, particularly the Rebirth Brass Band. I saw Bobby Womack perform at Jazz Fest about 10 years ago when Rebirth was playing the same day. They played the same gig probably without knowing of each others existence.
What music fan with any taste wouldn't love both versions. The original is a soul shouter in the style of Etta James and The Stones' cover brilliantly transforms it into a guitar-driven rock 'n' roll classic that exposed the Womack name to millions more fans around the world. A good thing for any songwriter.
@ericboogyboy Thanks for the support, Eric. When the sun set over the cornfields in western Ohio where I grew up, the local radio stations powered down and I could tune in WBZ out of Boston. In late 1964 Juicie Brucie Bradley played the Stones' version several times each night and rightly raved about the big bad guitar sound they created to open and close the song. Now, whenever I load "Forty Licks" into the CD player, I go straight to track 19.
Yes this would be the original because it was written by the Womacks, Bobby was the lead of the Valentinos before he went off on his own. I've got a few Valentino records from '61 I'm gonna post up.
Womack said in an interview that he told his manager that he did not want the Rolling Stones to record their version of the song, that he told Mick Jagger to get his own song. His manager convinced him to let the Rolling Stones record a version of the song. Six months later when he received the royalty check for the song he told his manager that Mick Jagger can have any song he wants. - haha money talks baby!
This is the original version of the song it was recorded and released in 1963 by the Valentinos. The Stones recorded there version one year later and had the hit. Check out Molly Hatchets version it really rocks with a southern boogie.
The VALENTINOS were ROBBED of chart success by THE STONES. Their original version of "IT'S ALL OVER NOW" should have been a big hit for THEM, NOT Mick Jagger and Co. The Val's version sounds better ANYWAY!!! If it HAD been, maybe ALL OF THE VALENTINOS would have been inducted into THE RRHOF BY NOW, instead of just Bobby !!!
Personally, I think both versions are great. The valentinos original is cerainly more funky and really grooves. The stones hillbilly swing version is also great and has a fantastic guitar solo from Richards (one of his best ever). Everybody, and I mean everybody worth mentioning in the music industry both practices and experiences ripping off. Even Chuck Berry and Sam Cooke developed their styles from other sources (as did the stones). Jagger and Richards were merely following tradition.
I didn't even know that there was another version. It's really good. More soul than the Stones but one is as good as the other in my opinion. The big guitar sound at the start of the Stones number gives it somrthing
@eddietheturdburglar Rubbish? Why didn't the Stones come with a new and original arrangement?! Jagger tried to the best of his limited ability to match Womacks vocals.
@eddietheturdburglar Listen to Bobby Womack on songs like "Looking For A Love", "Woman's Gotta Have It", "Thats The Way I Feel About Cha", If You think you're Lonely Now" his cover of "And I Love Her", you'll wake up from your slumber and realize that compared to Womack, Jagger shouldn't even be called a singer.
@eddietheturdburglar Jagger would cut his own throat to sound like Bobby Womack. Bobby is a great singer, great musician, has played guitar for many greats in the business and his songs have been covered by everybody. To Densely, this is the original, The Stones could not possibly give it a blusier feeling. This is a kick ass shouter. You will probably tell me the Stones version of "Time Is On My Side" is better than Irma Thomass'
